The Viltrumite Across the Worlds
Chapter 303: The Difference Between PeopleClark entered the school and used his super senses to locate the principal’s office immediately. Standing outside the door, he drew a deep breath.
From this moment onward, he would have to disguise himself and pretend to be a perfectly ordinary person.
Knock, knock, knock.
After steadying himself, Clark gently knocked on the door.
"Come in!"
A slightly raspy voice came from inside the office.
"Hello, Principal. My name is..."
Clark gently pushed the door open and found a tall, powerfully built middle-aged man waiting inside. His sharply defined features, upright posture, and black suit gave him an extraordinary presence. His eyes were bright and intense, while streaks of gray ran through his otherwise black hair.
"Wait. Don’t say anything yet. Let me guess."
"Hmm... I believe you must be Clark Kent, correct?"
"I’ve heard about you from your brother, Jovian..."
"I mean, from Mr. Jovian."
"You’re every bit as impressive as he said. Very good."
The middle-aged man had a thick black mustache and the natural bearing of a leader. Before Clark could even introduce himself, the man had already identified him.
"Uh, thank you for the compliment, but I’m not nearly as exceptional as you seem to think."
The praise embarrassed Clark. He did not believe he was anywhere near as remarkable as Jovian had apparently claimed.
"No, no, no."
"You’re far more exceptional than you realize."
The middle-aged man shook his head, walked over to Clark, and gave him a faint smile.
"Uh..."
Clark raised an eyebrow. He felt strangely uneasy beneath the man’s penetrating gaze, which seemed capable of seeing through everything.
It was almost as though the man had already uncovered Clark’s superhero identity.
That feeling put Clark on edge.
"Heh."
"You’re too tense. Relax. You can only truly fit in by placing yourself on the same level as everyone else, Clark."
The man smiled at Clark’s cautious, vigilant behavior. He patted Clark on the shoulder and spoke in a gentle voice.
"I can only fit in by placing myself on the same level as everyone else..."
"Thank you. I think I understand what I need to do now."
Clark contemplated the man’s advice. The tension that had filled his body disappeared almost instantly. Within only a few minutes, he had completely adjusted his mindset.
"Excellent!"
The principal nodded approvingly when he saw the change in Clark. Objectively speaking, Clark truly was a genius.
"Thank you again."
Clark expressed his gratitude once more.
"There’s no need to thank me, and you don’t have to call me Principal. I dislike such a formal title, and as you can probably tell, I’m not a particularly formal person."
"Why don’t you do what everyone else here does and simply call me Nolan?"
The principal gently patted Clark’s shoulder again. His expression resembled that of a father looking at a child who would soon grow into a man.
"Nolan?"
Clark paused in surprise before nodding.
"Good kid."
The corners of Nolan’s mouth rose slightly. He opened the office door and strode down the hallway.
Clark silently followed close behind him.
Before long, the two arrived outside a classroom. Nolan gently opened the door and politely addressed everyone inside.
"Sorry for the interruption. I’d like to introduce your new classmate."
Nolan turned toward the hallway and beckoned with one hand.
"Come in, Clark."
With his backpack properly secured and a pair of glasses resting on his face, Clark entered the classroom looking like a complete nerd.
"Hello, everyone. My name is Clark, and I’m your new classmate."
Clark politely greeted the teacher and students.
"He’s so handsome!"
Several girls in the classroom were immediately captivated by Clark’s youthful face and sharply defined jawline.
"He looks like a total nerd."
Naturally, the girls’ excited reactions provoked resentment among the boys, especially the tall students who refused to wear the school uniform and instead dressed in baseball jackets to stand out from everyone else.
"Clark, find any empty seat you like. Everyone else, continue with your lesson."
Nolan patted Clark on the shoulder, waved to the students, and walked out of the classroom.
"Goodbye, Nolan!"
The students called out in unison. They seemed to genuinely like their principal.
"Clark, there’s an empty seat in the back. You can sit there," the teacher said after Nolan left.
"Of course."
Clark nodded, walked to the last row, and sat down.
The moment he took his seat, however, he felt somewhat out of place.
The students surrounding him all had very distinct personalities. Some wore the school uniform but had removed their ties. Others had not bothered wearing the uniform at all. Several desks did not have a single book on them, while the books on other desks had absolutely nothing to do with the school curriculum.
"Is this really the finest school around?"
Clark studied the people surrounding him and fell into thought.
"Maybe it’s only this particular class."
A prestigious school could not possibly be as simple as it appeared on the surface. Perhaps Clark was simply too inexperienced to recognize what made the institution so exceptional.
"Where did you go to school before coming here, Clark?"
A muscular boy sitting nearby examined Clark from head to toe. The contempt in his eyes faded slightly when he noticed Clark’s powerful physique. Clark clearly looked like someone with extraordinary athletic ability.
"Me? I lived in the country, a long way from here."
Clark answered without hesitation.
"The country?"
Several nearby students looked surprised.
"Uh, is there something strange about that?"
Clark suddenly felt nervous. He did not know what he had said wrong. He had only told them the truth.
"No. It just sounds really cool."
The students shook their heads.
"So, Clark, could you see farms where you lived? With fields of crops and all kinds of animals?"
The students continued bombarding him with questions.
"Uh..."
"It wasn’t a matter of whether I could see a farm. I actually lived on one."
Clark scratched the back of his head, unsure how to respond to their curiosity.
For some reason, he felt like a rare animal being placed on display. Had these city kids really never met anyone from a small rural community?
"That’s awesome! When we get a vacation, could we go out to the country and hang out at your farm?"
Several of the larger boys excitedly questioned Clark.
"Of course. The place is enormous. You could run all night without reaching the other end. There are golden wheat fields everywhere, and sometimes you’ll see strange birds passing through. It’s a pretty interesting place."
Clark remembered the farm that his father, Jonathan, had carefully maintained. When Clark was a child, the entire property had been his personal playground.
After Jovian rose to prominence, however, Jonathan’s farm had steadily grown larger and larger. Sometimes Clark ventured so deeply into the property that he had to use his powers to find his way back home.
"That sounds incredible! Can we drive there and race our cars around?"
One of the boys asked excitedly.
"Sure. Nobody out there is going to care whether you’re speeding."
Clark nodded.
"That’s awesome. Seriously awesome!"
Several boys immediately voiced their approval.
"This is perfect, Clark. From now on, we’ve got your back at this school!"
The group of boys quickly became friends with Clark.
The teacher continued lecturing at the front of the classroom. She noticed the students whispering, but did nothing to stop them. They were all notorious troublemakers, and she had long since lost the desire to discipline them.
Besides, the school’s educational philosophy emphasized growing up happily, so she could not be bothered to interfere.
"I thought he was a sweet little lamb, but he’s already hanging around with those jerks!"
"Seriously!"
"They’d better not corrupt him..."
Many of the girls had expected Clark to be a quiet, well-behaved student. When they saw him quickly befriend the rowdiest boys in the class, they pouted in dissatisfaction.
Unfortunately, pouting accomplished nothing.
Those girls simply could not understand the simple pleasures of male friendship.
Their next class was physical education.
Clark’s movements were incredibly stiff because he was concentrating with all his might on appearing less powerful than he actually was. Thanks to his determined efforts, he managed to place only second in every event.
"Clark, you’re a monster..."
More and more boys gathered around him, showering him with praise.
After all, Clark had placed second in the entire class in long-distance running, sprinting, the high jump, and the long jump.
Although he had not come first in any individual event, his overall athletic ability was extraordinary.
"Maybe it’s because I did a lot of running and jumping back home."
"You know I lived in the country. Sometimes I had to help with farmwork, so maybe that’s how I became so athletic."
Clark hesitated before giving his classmates that explanation.
"That’s still ridiculous..."
The students exchanged glances. Clark’s abilities seemed almost unbelievable.
"I’m serious. Once you get a chance to visit the farm with me, you can train there too. Eventually, you’ll become just as strong as I am."
Clark casually fabricated an explanation. He had no choice. He needed to conceal his true identity.
When the lunch break arrived, Clark separated from the others and went alone to the school rooftop. He stood in the breeze, contemplating his weaknesses and considering which areas he still needed to improve.
"Clark..."
A voice behind him interrupted his thoughts.
"Hey! It’s you!"
Clark turned and froze when he saw the familiar figure standing behind him.
"We meet again."
The person behind Clark was naturally the muscular, middle-aged man who had previously spoken to him in the sky before mysteriously disappearing.
"How did you know I was here?" Clark asked.
"Heh. Our five senses are far more powerful than you realize."
The man laughed and flew over to Clark’s side.
"Clark, look at this ridiculous school. This is where the people of this planet raise their self-important offspring. They’re nothing but a collection of fools."
The man looked down coldly at the students below, who appeared as insignificant as ants from the rooftop.
"I don’t think you should talk about them that way."
Clark frowned. Honestly, after spending his first morning at the school, he had developed a fairly positive impression of the other students.
"Clark, have these students already assimilated you? How disappointing!"
The man’s brow furrowed as he angrily rebuked Clark.
"Assimilated me? What are you talking about?"
Clark frowned, unable to understand what the man meant.
"Clark, you must understand that you are fundamentally different from the people of this world. We stand far above them, while they are so weak that they can be destroyed effortlessly."
The man stepped in front of Clark and firmly grabbed his shoulder.
"I don’t understand what you’re trying to say."
Anger appeared in Clark’s eyes.
"You will."
The corners of the man’s mouth curled upward, and a vicious glint appeared in his eyes.
"Damn it..."
Clark cursed and immediately activated his transformation watch.
The instant Clark’s suit deployed, a large, rough hand clamped over his face.
A deafening sonic boom erupted a moment later as the man carried Clark away from the school.
"Was that a jet?"
"An explosion!"
The tremendous blast caused countless students to look up, but they saw nothing in the sky.
Inside the principal’s office, Nolan elegantly sipped his tea while gazing out the window. Upon closer inspection, the identification badge pinned to his chest bore the name Nolan Grayson.
Meanwhile, accompanied by another terrifying sonic boom, the muscular man in white carried Clark into the heart of the city.
Honk, honk!
"What the hell are you doing?"
"Excuse me, how do I get to Burger King?"
The blaring of car horns, angry arguments, pedestrians asking for directions, and countless other sounds flooded Clark’s ears. His super senses were absorbing every piece of information around him.
"Clark, look carefully! I’m about to show you exactly what separates us from them!"
Still gripping Clark by the neck, the man in white charged directly into the crowd.
Bodies burst apart on impact.
Screams filled the air.
Countless pedestrians were hurled skyward, severed limbs littered the street, and fresh blood splashed across the pavement.
"No, no, no..."
Clark repeatedly shook his head, but he was unable to resist. The man behind him was far stronger than he was.
They reached a busy highway where countless vehicles were racing forward.
The man in white positioned himself directly in their path and held Clark out in front of him.
"Now, let’s make a guess. When those cars hit your body, do you think you’ll die, or will the people driving them die?"
The man’s voice sounded like a demon whispering directly into Clark’s ear.
