"Do you see those cars, Clark? You need to understand the difference between us and them!"
The man lifted Clark in front of him and charged toward the speeding vehicles.
"No! No, no!"
Clark screamed, but there was nothing he could do to stop him.
Still holding Clark by the neck, the man rammed him into the cars racing down the highway.
Boom!
One vehicle after another exploded. The instant the people inside collided with Clark, his body, harder than steel, reduced them to bloody pulp. Blood spread across the highway.
One car, two cars, three cars...
The man continued holding Clark by the neck as though he were playing a reaction game, smashing every vehicle on the road into pieces.
"Look, Clark. Look at how weak they are..."
The man’s voice echoed relentlessly in Clark’s ears, tormenting his mind.
"Why are you doing this? Why?"
Clark could not understand. He shouted the question again and again, his voice filled with rage.
"You’re asking me why I’m doing this, Clark?"
"What a ridiculous question. Do you remember what you used to do whenever you found an anthill on the farm? To stop the ants from destroying the crops, you burned their nest with your heat vision before they could cause any damage. How is what I’m doing now any different from what you did then?"
The man waited for Clark’s answer.
"It’s not the same..."
"These are people. They’re intelligent beings. They shouldn’t be casually slaughtered like this!"
Clark argued desperately. He knew the man was wrong.
"You claim these humans are different from ants?"
"Then tell me what the difference is. Look at them. They’re just as fragile. I barely have to use any strength before they collapse."
The man tightened his grip on the back of Clark’s neck as he continued questioning him.
"I..."
Clark wanted to respond, but he could not find the words to refute the man behind him.
"Natural selection and survival of the fittest. Those are principles from this very planet. The strong rule the weak, and the weak obey the strong. That is the natural order."
"So why are you trying to interfere with the inevitable course of the universe?"
"Wake up, Clark. Join me. We’ll crush this world beneath us and rule the planet together!"
The man’s words continued ringing in Clark’s ears.
"I refuse!"
Clark shook his head. His sense of justice would never allow him to accept such an offer.
"Is that so? What a shame..."
"Then it appears I’ll have to resort to violence. You know, Clark, there’s nothing I hate more than having to use violence."
A vicious light flashed in the man’s eyes.
The next moment, the tall man with closely cropped hair drove his heavy fist into Clark’s body.
Clark’s flesh split open from the first blow, and blood poured from his mouth.
"You don’t understand anything, Clark! This world should be obeying our commands!"
The man’s fists became countless blurs as he pummeled Clark without stopping.
Blood repeatedly burst from Clark’s mouth. He tried to react, but the man never gave him an opportunity to fight back. Every time Clark attempted to catch his breath, another crushing fist slammed into his body.
The merciless beating continued for thirty full minutes.
Only when Clark was barely clinging to life did the man finally stop.
"What a shame, Clark. We could have become friends who shared the same ideals. Now, I suppose that will have to wait until our next lives."
The man drew back his fist to deliver the final blow.
"You went too far, Thragg!"
Just as the muscular man prepared to end Clark’s life, another figure appeared between them.
"Jovian..."
The man who had spent the last half hour brutalizing Clark was none other than Thragg, Grand Regent of the Viltrumite Empire.
"Heh. I have no interest in fighting you, but you should keep a closer eye on that precious brother of yours."
Thragg sneered, left Jovian with that warning, and flew into the sky.
"Clark, are you all right?"
Jovian glared after Thragg until he disappeared. Only then did he help Clark up from the ground, his expression filled with apparent concern.
"Jovian..."
Nearly every tooth in Clark’s mouth had been shattered, and his mouth was filled with blood. When he saw Jovian descending from the sky to save him, tears filled his eyes. He was relieved, overwhelmed, and utterly helpless.
"Don’t worry, Clark. From now on, I’ll protect you."
Jovian carried Clark back to Kent Tower.
Instead of taking him to a hospital, Jovian placed him directly inside a Kryptonian recovery pod and turned the solar radiation output to its maximum setting.
A faint groan escaped Clark as limitless sunlight washed over him. He could feel every cell in his body rejoicing as they eagerly absorbed the endless energy.
"You did well."
As he watched Clark recover, Jovian opened a communication channel with Thragg and praised him.
"It was adequate. I nearly gave us away. I haven’t fought properly in a while, and my body has grown sluggish."
Thragg shook his head, clearly dissatisfied with his performance.
"We still need more training."
"You, Clark, and even me."
Jovian stood with his hands behind his back and silently watched Clark inside the recovery pod.
Clark’s recovery speed was extraordinary.
It even surpassed his own expectations. His body had been damaged so severely that he theoretically should not have survived, yet only three hours beneath the concentrated sunlight were enough to restore him almost completely. Even the worst of his wounds had faded into faint scars.
"You’ve recovered nicely, Clark."
Jovian patted Clark on the shoulder after he emerged from the pod.
"I really have. I..."
Clark started to speak, only to suddenly fall silent.
He remembered what Thragg had told him.
Clark looked down at his body, a body that could effortlessly recover from devastating injuries, ignore bullets, and withstand almost any attack. Could someone like him truly live alongside humans, creatures who were so incredibly fragile?
"Clark, you need to learn how to live in a world made of cardboard."
"We’re far too powerful for this world. If we exert even a little too much force, we could destroy everything around us. That’s why you must always control yourself."
Jovian looked directly at Clark and spoke with complete seriousness.
"Jovian, should we really be living on this planet?"
Confusion filled Clark’s face as he asked the question.
"It isn’t a matter of whether we should or shouldn’t. You and I already live on this planet."
Jovian smiled as he answered.
Clark fell silent.
In that instant, it was as though something had clicked into place, and his mind suddenly became clear.
"I understand."
Clark nodded.
He did not return to class that afternoon. Instead, he went to the training room and exercised until late that evening.
Jovian said nothing about his decision.
That night, Clark left the building and went for a run. He hoped the exercise would help him think about what his purpose on this planet was supposed to be.
"Help me! Please, help me..."
As Clark raced through the sprawling city, desperate cries suddenly reached his ears.
"Someone’s calling for help?"
Clark focused on the cries, determined their direction, and followed them.
Eventually, he arrived at a dead-end alley. He could hear the voice on the other side of a wall, but the barrier stood more than ten feet tall.
Clark glanced around.
He had intended to stop using his powers, but there was no time to worry about that now.
With a light jump, he cleared the wall.
Deep inside the alley, several hooded young men had surrounded a blonde office worker in her twenties.
"Please, let me go! I’ll give you all my money!"
The woman continued pleading with them, hoping the thugs would release her.
"You were pretty arrogant this morning!"
"What happened? Why aren’t you acting so tough now?"
The men leered at her, clearly having no intention of letting her leave.
"Come on, sweetheart. We only want to have a little fun with you..."
"We’re not going to do anything bad. We just want to play a game!"
"It’s a game both sides can enjoy."
The gang leader stepped in front of the woman and slowly caressed her smooth cheek with a lustful grin.
"No, no, no..."
The woman slapped his hand away and continued backing up. Her panic deepened as tears ran down her cheeks.
"Looks like she doesn’t want to play along!"
"Boys, I guess we’ll have to be a little rougher."
The leader’s expression darkened after she knocked his hand away. Her defiance had humiliated him in front of the others, and it infuriated him.
"Don’t do this to me! You can’t do this!"
The woman wrapped her arms around herself, desperately protecting her chest as she retreated.
"We can do whatever we want to you! Nobody can stop us!"
The thugs advanced toward her.
"Maybe not everyone is incapable of stopping you."
A voice suddenly came from behind them.
The thugs turned around and were startled to find Clark standing there. Their surprise quickly gave way to contempt.
"Kid, this has nothing to do with you. I suggest you mind your own business."
They began walking toward Clark.
One of them even pulled out a knife.
"Listen carefully. First, I don’t want to fight. Second, if I do fight, it’s going to hurt."
Clark already had a short temper, and seeing the men draw weapons only made it worse.
"Teach him a lesson!"
The leader’s eyes gleamed viciously as he nodded to his followers.
"Kid, this is what you get for making us an... Ah! It hurts! It fucking hurts!"
The thug with the knife approached Clark, intending to frighten him. Before he could finish speaking, Clark crushed the knife along with the man’s wrist.
"I warned you. I’m already angry, and if you make me angrier, you’re finished."
Clark casually threw the injured thug aside and turned toward the others.
"Get him together!"
The remaining thugs exchanged glances, drew their weapons, and attacked Clark simultaneously.
Clark snorted.
He showed no mercy to the men charging toward him. Moving faster than the human eye could follow, he instantly broke their arms and legs.
Their agonized screams filled the alley.
"Are you all right?"
After dealing with the attackers, Clark looked toward the stunned woman who was staring at him.
"I’m fine..."
The woman nodded blankly, apparently still unable to process the astonishing scene she had just witnessed.
"Good. Then I’ll be leaving."
Clark turned and prepared to walk away.
"Hey! What’s your name?"
Just as he was about to leave, the woman called after him.
"Clark. Clark Kent."
Clark turned around and answered.
"Thank you, Clark!"
The woman thanked him, then walked over to the gang leader, raised her handbag, and smashed it against his head with all her strength.
The impact knocked him completely unconscious.
"Uh..."
Clark stared at her in surprise. He had not expected such a slender woman to hit that hard.
"Clark, could you walk out of here with me?"
The woman approached him and asked sweetly.
"Of course."
Clark nodded.
"My name is Emily. I encountered those thugs this morning while I was at my internship. I was a little harsh with them, and apparently they held a grudge. Looking back on it now, the whole thing is terrifying."
Emily walked beside Clark as she explained what had happened.
"It really is."
"It’s dangerous to be out alone at night, especially for a woman. Next time you have to go somewhere after dark, you should bring someone with you."
Clark nodded.
"But I don’t know anyone else!"
"You’re so strong, Clark. Why don’t you protect me whenever I need to go out at night?"
Emily smiled at him.
"Me?"
Clark froze, clearly not expecting Emily to make such a sudden request.
"What? You don’t want to?"
Emily gazed at him sadly.
"What? No, of course I do!"
Clark quickly shook his head. He was more than willing to help, especially since Emily was very beautiful.
