Even if some Pseudo-Mage believed they possessed a superb ability and decided to leave their companions behind, they still wouldn’t be able to complete all the patrols alone.

The three Pseudo-Mages looked at me once more.

It was almost as if they needed to confirm again that I really was just a Level 2 acolyte.

Then, one after another, everyone began leaving the room.

It didn’t take long for only Ruby and me to remain there.

Silence filled the room.

Ruby stared at me.

Then a playful smile appeared on her lips.

— Why are you so certain that I’ll join you?

I didn’t waste any time answering.

I approached her.

I held her waist and gently pulled her close.

Then I kissed her lips.

It was a brief kiss, but passionate enough to leave her silent for a few seconds when we pulled apart.

I smiled.

—You are my girlfriend, after all.

Ruby looked at me.

Then a smile spread across her face.

—Hehehe...

—Besides, you want the life essence of the creatures.

—I want the spirit cores.

—We can split any other materials we find later.

I let go of her waist.

—There’s no conflict between our goals.

I nodded.

—It’s a win-win situation for both of us.

Ruby pressed her palm against mine.

She shook her head.

—This empress wants the right to choose the loot first!

—Deal.

After hearing my confirmation, she turned and left the room.

I stared after her for a few seconds.

The silence was absolute.

Inside that dark underground tunnel, it seemed as though the world itself had stopped breathing.

Originally, there were no roads or paths in that place.

There were only irregular fractures in the rocks, channels of water formed after thousands of years of erosion, and gigantic natural caves.

However, after countless generations of underground creatures digging, exploring, and modifying that environment...

The result was a gigantic three-dimensional system of tunnels that spread throughout the depths of the planet.

It was impressive.

And frightening.

Sometimes, when two caves had relatively thin walls between them, it was possible to hear sounds coming from another passage.

But even so, we were still forced to travel long and winding routes.

Dozens of kilometers through the darkness.

Stalactites hung from the ceiling.

Stalagmites rose irregularly from the damp ground.

Water constantly trickled down the rock formations, keeping the ground covered with a layer of moisture and moss.

To be honest...

It was an extremely unpleasant environment.

The feeling of being isolated like that was enough to make anyone uneasy.

After all, hundreds of tons of rock were above our heads.

If a structure collapsed...

There would be nowhere to run.

Almost everyone held torches.

The ten of us formed a long line as we slowly walked through the tunnel.

The torchlight illuminated only a few meters ahead of us.

The rest was darkness.

From time to time, a current of cold air escaped through some invisible crack.

The flames flickered.

The shadows distorted across the walls.

For a few moments, it seemed as though there were creatures moving around us.

After approximately three hours of walking, we finally reached the first point on the inspection route.

In reality, those three hours had only been a sort of preparation.

The true beginning of the mission was here.

Lyra raised her voice.

Her normally clear and melodious voice sounded strangely hollow in that oppressive environment.

— All right.

—This is where we separate, every man for himself and God for all.

She looked at everyone.

— Try to complete your missions as quickly as possible.

—Then we’ll meet here again.

— I wish everyone good luck.

The ten acolytes began to split up.

Five small teams.

Five destinations.

Each group would follow a different route.

Lyra was responsible for the deepest location together with Selene.

No one objected.

In fact, no one seemed willing to argue when Lyra volunteered to take on the most dangerous mission.

She had demonstrated enough knowledge during the planning to earn, at least temporarily, the position of leader.

As for Ruby and me...

We received the easiest location.

I noticed a few hostile looks.

They were probably jealous.

But there was also a logical reason for that.

If the rest of the group decided to send us to a more dangerous region simply out of resentment and we ended up dead...

On the next patrol, they would have to complete a mission intended for ten people with only eight.

No one wanted to take that risk.

We were all dressed in thick black cloaks.

The clothes completely covered our bodies.

It wasn’t just because of the cold.

Some underground creatures possessed infrared vision.

If our body temperature were exposed, we could be detected easily.

The cloaks helped reduce that possibility.

After wishing each other good luck, the five teams disappeared into the darkness.

Ruby and I followed our path.

We walked for approximately seven or eight minutes.

Then I stopped.

Ruby stopped as well.

The environment was completely dark.

I could barely see anything.

I issued a mental command.

—Biochip. Activate night vision.

[Beep!]

The world changed.

The darkness disappeared.

Everything acquired a greenish hue.

And then...

I saw it.

The underground world was even stranger than I had imagined.

Glowing moss covered parts of the walls.

They emitted a cold and faint glow, creating an almost supernatural landscape.

The stone appeared black.

The areas where water had accumulated took on grayish tones.

The entire environment consisted of a mixture of black, gray, and green.

But there was more.

My gaze moved toward a dark corner.

There...

Some small red dots were moving.

Fast.

Very fast.

[Beep!]

[Vital signs analysis initiated.]

[Multiple small organisms detected.]

Judging by the size of the signals, they were probably small creatures.

Perhaps mud rats or wall snakes.

Nothing particularly threatening.

At least for now.

Then I turned my head.

Ruby was behind me.

She was still wearing that same bright red dress.

The clothing contrasted violently with the darkness of the underground.

Her fair skin was partially exposed.

But there was something strange.

I was only three steps away from her.

Even so...

I couldn’t feel her body heat.

I frowned.

With my normal perception, Ruby appeared perfectly alive.

But with night vision...

She almost looked like a statue.

A human-shaped stalagmite.

The ability of a Blood Fairy was truly unpredictable.

She could conceal her own vital presence.

That, combined with her absurd agility, was indeed frightening, but I understood one more thing.

That place was perfect for someone like Ruby.
