Xiling Data Archive disappeared into the ridge behind Jingwei.
From the access road, the property looked like a low concrete administration building with two loading entrances cut into the surrounding rock.
Nothing above ground suggested that most of the structure continued beneath it through reinforced corridors, storage vaults and service areas originally designed to preserve government records.
Jingwei waited inside the western tunnel while the final security team cleared the buried levels.
The shutdown simulation had begun at 11:20 p.m.
At midnight, the archive would disconnect from both independent grid connections. Backup generators would start automatically, environmental controls would transfer to protected circuits and every security door would respond according to its emergency programming.
The test had been scheduled for three days from now.
Moving it forward changed nothing except the hour at which they discovered what failed.
Jingwei watched the system status on his tablet. Ventilation remained stable. The internal network had separated from external connections, and the first generator was already carrying the residential core without exceeding 41 percent of its rated load.
The second generator waited in reserve.
Shichen stood near the tunnel control room with the engineer responsible for the new power system. He had slept for less than four hours before leaving Hanchuan’s house, but his movements remained precise as he reviewed the transfer sequence.
Zhiyi and Hanchuan monitored the test remotely.
Zeyu’s trucks waited 12 kilometers away with the first loads of food and medicine. They wouldn’t approach until Xiling passed.
"Begin the access test," Jingwei ordered.
One of his technicians triggered the emergency protocol.
Doors closed throughout the buried structure, dividing the tunnel entrances from the residential and storage sections. Cameras shifted to backup power. Motion sensors and internal alarms reported their status in sequence.
Green indicators spread across the display.
The western tunnel door closed in 14 seconds.
Jingwei waited for the next command to reopen it.
The indicator remained red.
His technician tried again. The locking system acknowledged the instruction, but the reinforced door didn’t move.
"Stop," Jingwei said before the man could repeat it.
The technician removed his hand from the controls.
Jingwei checked the door camera. Nothing blocked the track, and the internal sensors reported that the mechanical locks had disengaged. The system believed the door was free to open.
It was wrong.
Shichen crossed the tunnel as soon as he saw the failed status. "Did the motor respond?"
"The system registered the command," Jingwei told him. "The door didn’t move."
The engineer opened the diagnostic panel. Power was reaching the controller, but the current dropped before reaching the door’s hydraulic actuator.
He began explaining that the actuator had passed its installation test.
Jingwei cut him off. "It failed now."
That was the only result that mattered.
The emergency doors had been tested individually while the archive remained connected to the grid. No one had tested every door during a complete shutdown because the final simulation wasn’t supposed to occur until all systems were commissioned together.
The western tunnel door worked under ordinary power.
It didn’t work when they needed it most.
Shichen studied the power diagram. "The controller transferred to the protected circuit. The actuator didn’t."
The actuator remained connected to the original service line. When the grid disconnected, its control system continued operating while the equipment responsible for moving the door lost power.
Someone trapped on the tunnel side could issue commands indefinitely without opening it.
"Can it be opened manually?" Jingwei asked.
"Yes," Shichen replied. "But the release is on the interior side."
That protected the shelter from someone forcing the door from the tunnel. It also meant the western entrance became useless as an evacuation route if the electrical system failed while anyone remained outside it.
Jingwei looked toward the engineer. "Fix it."
The man estimated that rerouting the actuator to the protected circuit would require six hours.
"You have two," Jingwei said.
Shichen didn’t contradict the deadline. He contacted the electrical supervisor and ordered a second team into the tunnel while Jingwei’s people checked every other emergency door against the same flaw.
Three more actuators had been installed according to the original power diagram.
None had failed during the simulation because their service circuits happened to remain active through secondary connections. They would fail if those connections were damaged later.
Jingwei ordered all four rerouted.
At 12:07 a.m., his phone displayed an encrypted call from Hanchuan.
"What failed?" Hanchuan asked.
"The western tunnel door lost power during shutdown," Jingwei reported. "Four actuators need new circuits."
"Can anyone enter the protected core?"
"No."
"Can everyone inside leave through the eastern tunnel?"
"Yes."
The failure didn’t compromise their immediate security, but Hanchuan didn’t suggest accepting it.
"How long?" he asked.
"Two hours."
"Call when it passes."
Hanchuan ended the call.
Jingwei returned to the control room while the electrical teams opened the service panels. The shutdown simulation continued around them. Ventilation held its assigned pressure, water pumps transferred to backup power and the security network remained isolated from every external connection.
At 12:41 a.m., Qinghe sent the final report from the Reservoir Safe House.
Its emergency doors had completed three full cycles. The ventilation system had remained stable for 24 hours, the wells were clean and the electrical inspection found no critical failures.
The first Heat alternate was approved for occupation.
Jingwei read the report once before forwarding it to Hanchuan and Zhiyi. He didn’t congratulate Qinghe. Passing was the expected result.
Finding Xiling’s failure before they needed the door was better than passing an incomplete test.
The first actuator was connected to the protected circuit at 1:18 a.m. The door opened on the next command, closed under backup power and opened again after the reserve generator replaced the primary.
Jingwei required five complete cycles.
The remaining doors received the same correction before he allowed the simulation to end.
Shichen watched the western tunnel door close for the final time. "The original certification wouldn’t have found this until the scheduled shutdown test."
"In three days," Jingwei said.
"Yes."
Too late wasn’t a measurement Jingwei accepted.
At 3:36 a.m., Xiling disconnected from the grid again.
The generators started. Environmental controls transferred. Every security door closed, locked, reopened and returned to its assigned position without failing.
Jingwei signed the security approval.
Shichen signed the structural and operational report beside it.
Zeyu’s waiting trucks started toward the archive before either man called him. He had been watching the test status and apparently considered two signatures sufficient permission.
The first vehicle entered the eastern loading tunnel at 4:02 a.m.
Cases of food, medicine and emergency equipment began moving behind the reinforced doors. Workers scanned each one into the Xiling inventory while the ventilation system continued operating entirely on protected power.
Jingwei remained until the last truck cleared the tunnel.
When he finally stepped outside, the eastern sky had started to brighten beyond the ridge. His phone showed confirmation from all three Heat properties.
Luming Mountain Hotel was operational.
The Reservoir Safe House was approved.
Xiling Data Archive was occupied by security personnel and receiving supplies.
They had prepared three places to survive because trusting one had already killed too many of them.
Eight days remained before the Heat began.
