The World Is Mine For The Taking

Chapter 1673 - 233 - The Storm Hits (5)

I looked at them for a moment before turning my attention back toward the battlefield ahead of us, where the sight had become increasingly difficult to ignore as bombs continued raining down upon Guardian 2.0 without showing even the slightest indication that the bombardment was going to stop anytime soon.

One explosion followed another, shaking the ground beneath our feet while flashes of light repeatedly illuminated the area around us, yet despite the sheer amount of firepower being thrown at it, the barrier continued holding firm without giving the enemy the opening they were desperately looking for.

Guardian 2.0 was still standing.

Seeing that seemed to ease the soldiers' nerves somewhat, especially those who had spent hours watching the bombardment without knowing whether our defenses would actually survive the next wave of attacks.

At least for the moment, they could breathe a little easier.

"The war is going to come to us," Lionel said while keeping his eyes fixed on the battlefield, his expression remaining serious despite the constant explosions happening in front of us. "Normally, I would want to be the one invading their territory, but..."

"The chances of us winning are probably higher if we let them come to us instead," I told them, finishing his thought before he could continue.

"That's right, huh..." Reilhahand said, nodding slowly as he continued staring toward the enemy forces.

All of us remained focused on the barrier while missile after missile continued crashing against it, creating enormous explosions that rolled across the battlefield and filled the air with smoke, debris, and the constant thunder of destruction.

The sound had become so repetitive that I was starting to think my ears had simply given up trying to process it.

Right now, we weren't in a position where launching an attack made much sense.

Our current position was defensive, and until we understood exactly what the enemy was planning, throwing our forces forward would be little more than gambling with everyone's lives for the sake of gaining a little ground.

"They still haven't used their strongest explosives yet," I said while watching another group of missiles disappear against the barrier.

"It certainly seems that way," Lilia replied, keeping her gaze fixed on the battlefield. "Do you think the barrier will be able to withstand whatever they have prepared for us?"

"I honestly have no idea," I admitted while continuing to watch the barrier. "They're still holding back, and the attacks we've seen so far might only be the beginning. The explosives they're saving could be considerably stronger than the bombs they've already dropped on us."

I took a brief breath before continuing.

"That's why I asked Agneis to strengthen the barrier as much as she could, making it strong enough that it wouldn't be destroyed too easily even under constant bombardment."

I looked toward the enormous defensive barrier surrounding our position.

"Even with that reinforcement, though, I can't guarantee that it will hold forever."

There was only one way to find out whether the barrier would actually survive until the end of this battle, and unfortunately, that answer wasn't something I could simply calculate beforehand.

Time would eventually tell us whether the barrier would break or continue standing.

Still, I wasn't going to let it fall onto these people if I could do anything about it.

That was exactly why I was still here.

As long as the King remained at the base, there was at least someone capable of keeping the situation from completely spiraling out of control, and I had no intention of abandoning everyone while the enemy continued throwing everything they had at us.

"Would you like to get some rest for a while, Leon?" Veronica asked while looking over at me with a concerned expression, clearly noticing how long I had already been standing here without taking a proper break.

It was already well past midnight, and we'd been dealing with this bombardment for roughly twenty hours without the enemy stopping even once.

Twenty hours of explosions.

Twenty hours of missiles.

Twenty hours of watching the barrier get hammered over and over again.

At this point, I was beginning to wonder whether the people attacking us had simply decided that sleep was an unnecessary luxury reserved for people who weren't currently trying to destroy an entire military base.

"It doesn't look like they're going to stop anytime soon, either," she added while glancing toward the endless barrage that continued lighting up the battlefield.

"I know," I replied, keeping my eyes on the barrier while another series of explosions erupted against its surface.

"But even though the barrier is still holding up, I can't exactly take a rest right now."

I couldn't afford to relax while the enemy was still attacking.

I couldn't simply walk away while the barrier remained under constant pressure.

Most importantly, I couldn't leave while everyone around me was depending on that barrier to keep them alive.

If something happened while I was resting, I would never forgive myself for choosing that moment to step away.

While I was saying that, however, a familiar voice suddenly rang out across the battlefield.

"Leon!"

Agneis shouted my name from somewhere nearby, and the urgency in her voice immediately made me look toward her without even thinking about it.

I looked up and saw her staring toward the barrier.

The moment I followed her gaze, I immediately understood why she had shouted.

A section of the barrier had been destroyed.

It hadn't completely collapsed, and the majority of the defensive structure was still standing, but part of it had finally been broken through after hours upon hours of continuous bombardment.

"So it seems..." I said quietly while staring at the damaged section.

The barrier had been damaged, and I honestly had no idea how it had happened in the first place, but... well, the entire thing had already repaired itself almost immediately after the attack stopped.

I figured it must have been because of the concentrated attack, which had somehow managed to overwhelm the barrier for a brief moment and cause some actual damage before it recovered.

Or maybe something else... Like what Agneis mentioned. Something that defies the laws of nature.

Fortunately, Guardian 2.0 was made with a self-repairing material, so even when part of the structure was damaged or destroyed, the material would automatically heal itself and restore the barrier to its original condition.

That was certainly convenient, although considering what had just happened, I didn't think it would be smart for us to become complacent just because the damage had repaired itself so quickly.

If anything, the fact that they had managed to damage the barrier at all meant that we needed to take the situation more seriously.
