There Must Be Something Wrong With This Game!

Chapter 124 - 57: Origin of the Void Spirit

Next, the Priest recounted a very long myth.

The precursor to myth is legend, and the precursor to legend is history.

Even though the Alliance constantly erased the relevant history, some of it was still passed down in the form of myths.

The power of truth is fearsome. A sliver of it is enough to make people think, and even give rise to a massive religious order—the Mechanical Sect.

Based on what he had seen and what the Priest had told him, Duan Fei began to think, finally piecing together a relatively logical history for this instance.

「Time rewinds a few thousand years, to an era when humanity had not yet discovered the Void and was still trapped on its home planet.」

In this instance, the home planet was slightly farther from its star. As a result, the planet’s temperature was about ten degrees colder, which reduced the habitable zones and made winters longer.

Despite the cold climate, humanity still developed slowly, gradually advancing in astronomy and inventing the telescope...

If nothing unexpected had happened, humanity’s development should have continued with more aerospace-related breakthroughs, culminating in the launch of their first satellite.

Then, the unexpected happened.

Humanity was astonished to discover that the space around their home planet was exceptionally empty. The nearest satellite was just a tiny sphere; the entire star system contained only a single star and a single planet.

And it was a dying star.

The lack of resources made it nigh impossible for humanity to leave. Meanwhile, the dying star would continually expand, eventually becoming a red giant and swallowing the last planet.

You could say they were doomed from the very beginning.

Just as everyone was waiting to die, another unexpected event occurred.

The Void.

It was like a prank from the gods. Just as humanity lost all hope, a new hope was thrown to them: some people discovered the existence of the Void.

Through the Void, humanity could instantly cross tens or even hundreds of light-years. This made interstellar travel incredibly convenient and gave humanity hope of leaving their home planet.

However, traversing the Void required a special kind of person: a Navigator.

The ability to perceive Void Points was a special Talent that Navigators possessed. While Star Gates could only be built near designated Void Points, travel itself still depended on a Navigator.

To enhance the Navigators’ abilities, special drugs were developed. These drugs would significantly boost a Navigator’s ability to perceive the Void, even allowing some ordinary people to gain the capabilities of a Navigator after taking them.

With that, the final piece of technology for interstellar travel was unlocked.

Led by the Navigators, humanity left their home planet, crossed the vast cosmos, and arrived in the boundless outer world, establishing their new home thousands of light-years away.

Over the next thousand years, humanity’s sphere of influence expanded dramatically. The Alliance’s territory grew to span thousands of light-years, allowing humanity to flourish and spread.

As their territory expanded, the shortage of Navigators became more and more severe. Some people had to continuously take the special drugs to maintain their Navigator Talent, which led to some anomalies.

Some Navigators reported seeing Void Points even in their dreams. Others claimed they could occasionally use special abilities, including but not limited to summoning fire and creating ice.

However, these cases were dismissed as Navigator hallucinations. After some simple Spirit Healing, they were sent back to their posts to continue guiding ships.

This continued until a Navigator suddenly dropped dead on duty, and the entire crew on his ship was reduced to a pile of mush. Only then was the matter truly brought to light.

According to the ship’s black box, the Navigator had collapsed from exhaustion before guiding the ship into the Void and thus failed to enter the preparation room.

He later woke up while the ship was in the Void, and at that moment, he gazed directly into the Void.

A transparent entity emerged from his body. After appearing, this thing walked directly into the preparation room and turned everyone, including the captain, into mush.

The last victim was the Navigator himself.

After eliminating all living beings, the transparent entity remained on the ship, silently waiting for investigators to enter, whereupon it wiped out the investigation team before they could react.

The transparent entity only vanished completely after killing over a hundred people. It was unknown whether it returned to the Void or was lurking somewhere else.

Afterward, an investigation revealed that the Navigator’s body had undergone permanent mutation from taking large doses of the drugs. With each trip through the Void, he had absorbed a small amount of Void Energy, which manifested as a Superpower.

This Superpower came from the Void. Therefore, when he gazed directly into the Void, the Superpower instinctively tried to return to the Void’s embrace, appearing as a transparent, silent, humanoid figure. This was the Void Spirit.

After understanding the origin of the Void Spirit, Duan Fei asked, "Then I have a question. Why do Void Spirits kill people?"

"That’s something we don’t know." The Priest shook his head regretfully. "Our Holy Scripture only records this much. The rest of the content is too obscure for us to comprehend. But according to the Holy Scripture, we believe the entire world is already riddled with problems. Every time humans cross the Void, a little more of the substance within it seeps out. If this continues, it’s only a matter of time before our world is devoured by the Void."

Duan Fei nodded. He had a good idea of what the Priest wanted him to do.

"So, you want me to help you clean up this world’s problems—which means completely sealing the Void passages?"

"Yes. The Void passages are the root of all evil. The only correct way to save the world is to seal the passages, destroy this world built upon a mistake, and return to tradition."

"Sorry, but that’s just your side of the story. I’m not going to agree to it. Besides, we only have four days left. I highly doubt a world can be saved in four days."

In response to Duan Fei’s refusal, the Priest said with a smile, "It’s alright. According to the Holy Scripture, our Messiah will eventually descend. He will bear flames and sit upon a throne, find all the problems, and have his Six-winged Angels resolve everything for him. It doesn’t matter if you disagree. Saving this place is already your destiny, and all your actions are preparing you for it."

"Given your doctrine, I seriously suspect your Messiah is a game tester whose only job is to find bugs and tell the programmers to fix them."

"What’s that?"

"Nothing, just an inside joke. Thanks for the information. Goodbye."

"Goodbye."

Watching Duan Fei leave, the Priest began to softly sing a hymn to commemorate his meeting with the Messiah.

Stepping out of the Church, Duan Fei stretched his arms, preparing to walk around some more and see if he could trigger another side quest to flesh out his understanding of the world.

He had only taken a few steps when his wristband lit up. Little Drilling Wind’s voice came through: "This is Little Drilling Wind! We need help, urgently! We’ve been kidnapped! Come save us, quick!"

"Wait, you’ve been kidnapped, so why do you sound so happy?" Duan Fei asked, confused.

"It’s a random event! It’ll probably have extra rewards, so why wouldn’t I be happy!"

Staring at Little Drilling Wind’s smile, Duan Fei suddenly realized that this teammate of his wasn’t exactly normal, either.
