There Must Be Something Wrong With This Game!
Chapter 128 - 61: Great MiracleSeveral Dying Suns were slowly licking the Star Gate of the Land of Exile. To them, the enormous Star Gate was a donut, each bite an unparalleled delicacy that brought immense satisfaction.
Like children, they greedily devoured the Star Gate. The residents who occasionally fell into their mouths were like fruit in a dessert, delighting them all the more.
Their black, slug-like tongues would occasionally intertwine. They would tussle for a moment after going for the same piece of food, but they always ended up resolving it amicably, sectioning off different areas before continuing to lick.
Amidst this apocalyptic scene, an experiment was underway in a laboratory in University City.
The lab staff had already given up and were preparing to throw a huge party in their final moments, so they had absolutely no interest in entertaining Duan Fei’s request.
However, the resourceful Duan Fei had brought in a helper: the Priest from the Mechanical Sect.
The Mechanical Sect held a transcendent status in the Land of Exile, and the Priest’s own position within the sect was similarly elevated.
With these two buffs stacked, the lab’s researchers accepted Duan Fei’s proposal on the condition that the Priest would conduct a service nearby while they performed the experiment.
The Priest immediately whipped out the Holy Scripture. "God said, ’0 and 1 are good,’ and so computers were made in their image. God also said, ’C++ is the best language, no objections allowed. If you disagree, you can take it up with Him one-on-one.’"
Listening nearby, Little Fatty’s veins instantly bulged. He looked ready to physically persuade the Priest that Python was, in fact, the best language!
Signaling Little Fatty to quiet down, Duan Fei looked at the researchers bustling around him and asked, "How’s it going?"
"Incredible."
With the other researchers assisting, the director in charge of the project stared at the experimental data, his expression growing grave.
No matter what kind of damage Duan Fei’s body sustained, he was essentially unharmed.
But once separated from his body, samples like his blood or hair would slowly lose their unique properties, eventually becoming no different from ordinary human tissue.
This process was rather slow, however. Based on the current rate of decay, it would take about ten hours for the samples to completely lose their special properties.
This peculiar characteristic made the director eager to study it further, but Duan Fei interrupted his reverie. "Snap out of it. How are the preparations for the cloning environment coming along?"
"It’s ready. The cloning research here is impressive. It’s what you’d expect from a world capable of interstellar travel."
After having Duan Fei take a seat, the director tried to cut the back of his hand with a scalpel. But after much effort, he only managed to make a tiny incision, which healed automatically before they could even get the equipment in place.
After a moment of silence, the director asked, "Can’t you control it?"
"It’s a passive ability. Hard to control."
"What about a chainsaw, then?"
"Hold on. I’ll get you some of my blood-tears."
Turning his back, Duan Fei unwrapped the bandages over his eyes, let the ensuing blood-tears drip into a flask, and handed it to the director.
They destroyed the DNA structure within the blood-tears, combined it with a fungus, suspended it in a high-concentration nutrient solution, and cryo-preserved it. Finally, they loaded it into an artillery shell. Thus, the "Duan Fei Fungus," capable of rapid reproduction after deployment, was successfully created.
An experimental shell was fired. Upon landing, the snowflake-like fungus within instantly blossomed, spreading rapidly like a white carpet and enveloping a large area.
A tongue swept across the area, plowing a massive furrow in the ground. Yet, when it reached the fungus-covered spot, it couldn’t tear up the earth.
After several confused attempts, the Dying Sun realized it truly couldn’t touch this place. It finally gave up and started searching for another target.
"Success! Even the Dying Suns can’t devour these areas!"
"Good. The experiment is a success. Start releasing the fungus into the atmosphere! Commandeer the ships immediately! We have to move fast!"
The spaceships began to take off. They couldn’t leave the Star Gate’s effective range, but they had no problem operating in its immediate vicinity.
Vast quantities of the fungus were released. Upon deployment, the fungus began to reproduce rapidly, spreading on the air currents and multiplying continuously.
As more and more of the fungus was released, the sky above the Star Gate’s remaining territory was slowly dyed white. The snow-like substance coated the Star Gate, preventing the Dying Suns in the sky from feeding.
Discovering they could no longer consume these areas, the Dying Suns in the sky immediately grew confused and resentful.
The white fungus was like frosting on a donut, making the Star Gate look even more delicious and intensifying the agony of being denied their meal.
But then, they discovered a small, untouched area.
Someone had intentionally sectioned it off. Several hundred square kilometers of land were not covered by the fungus and looked as delicious as ever.
They shot their tongues out, and several straw-like appendages collided as they began to fight over this final delicacy.
With so little food left, the Dying Suns were no longer amicable. They scrambled to claim the last patch of land, and when that failed, they began ramming into each other, coming to blows.
Through external monitors, the people in the lab watched the massive celestial bodies collide in the sky. Black meteors scattered in all directions, and terrifying streams of plasma lashed the Star Gate like whips. But even these thousands-of-degrees-hot torrents couldn’t breach the white fungus protecting it.
"By the CPU, it’s a miracle," the Priest muttered, unable to stop himself from tracing a 1 with his left hand and a 0 with his right as he began to pray devoutly.
Looking at Duan Fei, the Priest said respectfully, "Thank you for this boon, great Mechanical Envoy. I will proclaim your greatness and this unparalleled miracle to the billions of my brethren in the Mechanical Sect."
It wasn’t just the Priest. The other NPCs also looked at Duan Fei as if a Saint had descended among them.
Dying Suns were weapons that surpassed stellar lasers, a mixture of a star’s own power and the darkness of the Void. Not even a top-tier Level 5 Superpower User could possibly survive their assault.
This was the first time the Dying Suns had ever been stopped by a Superpower User. Such terrifying strength led them to suspect that Duan Fei was the God of Mechanism himself, causing them to convert to the Mechanical Sect on the spot.
Duan Fei, however, ignored them and began reading the notification for the new title he had just received.
For saving a Star Gate and the hundreds of millions of people on it, a new title had been activated.
[Savior]: This title is bestowed upon heroic players who have saved hundreds of millions of lives. When you gain reputation, you gain 1 extra point.
Equipped Effect: Others will perceive you as a savior, generating additional goodwill. However, if your actions do not live up to this honor, they will feel additional revulsion toward you. At the same time, those bent on destroying the world will feel an even more intense hatred for you.
The title manifested as a card. Its effect was quite good; even when not equipped, it provided a passive bonus of 1 extra reputation point.
Putting the title card away, Duan Fei ignored the brawling Dying Suns overhead. He called his companions over and headed toward the cells holding Thun and the others.
