There Must Be Something Wrong With This Game!
Chapter 172 - 38: Rose ApartmentThe little boy’s eyes lit up as he stared at the duo who had suddenly appeared.
He hopped forward and began circling Duan Fei and Jinghong, asking nonstop, "How did you just appear out of nowhere? Who are you? Are you Doraemon? Where’s the Time Machine?"
"You shouldn’t be reading that kind of weird manga. Have you done your summer homework? Do you know your multiplication tables?"
"You’re so annoying," the little boy said, exasperated. "Just tell me your name first."
"Duan Someone. And you?" Duan Fei asked.
"Sun Yu. See that building over there? It’s full of treasures. I can never find them all, no matter how much I look every day. We can look for them together sometime. It’s really fun."
Even though it was their first time meeting, Sun Yu wasn’t shy at all and immediately told them about his "treasures."
The building Sun Yu was talking about was the Rose Apartment behind him, the same place Duan Fei and Jinghong had explored before.
The apartment building was twenty-one stories tall. In the sunset glow, only a single room on the eighteenth floor was lit; all the other windows were dark.
When they were exploring inside earlier, their view had been obstructed, so there were many things they couldn’t see.
Now, standing outside, Duan Fei noticed the apartment was surrounded by mountains on three sides. Only a single, winding mountain road led to the outside world, and much of it ran alongside sheer cliffs, making accidents likely.
Moreover, it seemed to have just snowed today. The snow had already piled up on the road, making the descent exceptionally difficult.
If a car’s brakes were to fail here, an accident would be all but guaranteed.
"It doesn’t seem like there are many people here," Duan Fei commented.
"Yeah, it’s the Spring Festival, so all the workers went home for the new year. But my family has nowhere to go, and we get overtime pay for staying, so we stayed. By the way, how did you two get here, anyway?"
Before Duan Fei could answer, Sun Yu continued on his own, "Never mind, that’s not important. There are plenty of rooms in the apartment, so I’ll find one for you. Let’s go see my dad first, but he doesn’t talk much and isn’t very friendly, so don’t mind him."
Recalling the information he had gathered earlier, Duan Fei nodded in understanding.
As they followed Sun Yu back to the apartment, the little boy was like an overflowing kettle, pouring out all the information he had in one go.
For instance, a large tourist center was going to be built here, and the building they were living in now would soon be demolished and rebuilt as a hotel.
For instance, his father, Sun Cheng, was a driver who usually chauffeured the construction foreman, but since the foreman had gone home, he was now idle.
His mother had a strange illness and would just sit by the window like a puppet every day, watching the scenery. After his father finished his shift, he would just stay with his mother, which left five-year-old Sun Yu incredibly bored.
Sun Yu had a large vocabulary and spoke with surprising clarity; you would never guess he was just a child.
However, he gestured wildly as he spoke, his movements full of childlike charm.
Just as they approached the apartment, Duan Fei saw a man standing at the entrance, his hands pressed together, bowing in worship toward the building.
"Uncle Peng, what are you praying to now?"
The man called Uncle Peng was in his early thirties, not very tall, with a refined, scholarly air about him, and wore a pair of gold-rimmed glasses.
Hearing Sun Yu’s voice, Uncle Peng turned his head, nodded at the boy with a smile, then faced Duan Fei and Jinghong and asked, "And you two are...?"
Sun Yu grabbed Duan Fei’s arm and cut in, "They’re tourists."
After saying that, he winked at Duan Fei and whispered, "Uncle Peng is a bit paranoid. If we say anything else, he’ll overthink it, so this is for the best. He’s the engineer here. Uncle Peng is in charge of all the maintenance for the rooms, the hot water switches, the wiring, all that stuff."
Hearing that Duan Fei and Jinghong were tourists, Uncle Peng smiled and said, "Oh, I see. In that case, you can go ahead and find a room for them. You two, I still have things to do, so please make yourselves at home."
After speaking, Uncle Peng resumed bowing to the building, as if nothing was more important than his worship.
Once inside, they came to the security booth by the entrance. A man with a bluish complexion, wearing a military greatcoat, was huddled inside, staring blankly outside.
Even though it was winter, he seemed excessively cold, making Duan Fei suspect he wasn’t wearing anything under his coat.
’What a pervert,’ Duan Fei thought to himself.
"I think you’re the pervert," Jinghong said, narrowing her eyes at Duan Fei.
"Hey, why are you tarnishing my good name out of thin air!"
"You just admitted to it, which means you weren’t that innocent to begin with."
Duan Fei thought about it. ’Jinghong’s a pretty good logician,’ he mused. ’Her reasoning is flawless. I guess I have no choice but to admit I’m a pervert.’
As they passed the security booth, the window suddenly slid open. The guard shivered and said, "Visitors? Please sign in."
Duan Fei took the pen and guest book. As he took the pen, he accidentally brushed against the man’s fingers and immediately pulled his hand back.
An object that is cold to an extreme can feel like a red-hot poker when touched.
The man’s fingers gave Duan Fei that exact sensation. The cold was so intense it felt like it could freeze his very soul, making him wonder if the man was even alive.
Noticing Duan Fei’s suspicious gaze, the man gave a simple, honest smile. "I was born with a naturally cold constitution. Sorry about my cold hands."
"Is that so? I thought you were already dead."
"It’s the new year. You really shouldn’t say things like that."
Hearing the man’s complaint, Duan Fei just smiled and signed his name.
A fake name, of course.
This was a supernatural instance, but no supernatural events had occurred yet. He had to be careful in a situation like this.
Names held a special significance. He had learned from the "Night of Horror Movies" instance that one’s ID was extremely important and must never be revealed lightly.
He also signed a fake name for Jinghong. Duan Fei saw that he also had to fill in the entry time, so he casually asked, "What’s today’s date?"
"It’s the second day of the new year. Six-thirty in the evening."
After filling it out, Duan Fei idly flipped through the guest book and saw that quite a few people had arrived before them.
It seemed this apartment wasn’t just housing for the workers; some tourists were also temporarily put up here.
But what puzzled Duan Fei was that these tourists had only filled in their arrival times, not their departure times.
Did they not need to fill it out...
Or were they still here?
If they were still here, why weren’t any of their lights on?
Just as Duan Fei was about to ask, Jinghong, who was beside him, grabbed his hand and whispered, "Don’t ask. I have a bad feeling about this."
Jinghong’s intuition was always sharp.
Especially in a supernatural instance like this, Jinghong’s intuition became even more reliable. Duan Fei nodded and decided not to press the matter.
Walking further in, Duan Fei saw an old man coming out of a room, holding a mop.
Seeing Sun Yu walk in, the old man, who was dressed in a janitor’s uniform, smiled and said, "Sun Yu, made some new friends?"
"Yeah. Grandpa Zhao, you’re not off work yet?"
"It’s still early. I’m going to clean a few more rooms. The more I do today, the less I have to do tomorrow. Come find me when you have time, and I’ll give you some candy."
"Thanks, Grandpa Zhao."
After saying goodbye to Grandpa Zhao, Sun Yu started up the stairs, telling Duan Fei and Jinghong, "These are pretty much all the people who are still here. Oh, right, Granny Liu from the first-floor cafeteria is here too. She prepares some free food every day, but she doesn’t like seeing people, so you can just go ahead and eat. We’ll have to take the stairs in a bit. The elevator’s broken, so we have to climb."
By the time a panting Sun Yu reached the eighteenth floor, half an hour had passed.
Pointing toward the fire escape exit, Sun Yu gasped, "I told my dad we should move to the first floor, but he refuses no matter what. Every time we have to climb for this long... it’s exhausting."
After catching his breath, Sun Yu pushed the door open, revealing what lay beyond the stairwell.
The dark hallway was unlit. The floor’s layout was the same as what he had seen in Sun Yu’s memories, but there were slight differences in the details.
The door to one of the rooms was open, and from inside, they could faintly hear the sound of running water and a man’s soft muttering.
"Come back... Come back..."
Down below the apartment, something suddenly crashed to the ground.
Several sections of the "Rose Apartment" sign suddenly fell off, leaving only two words behind.
Ghost Apartment.
