"Dad, I’m home. And two more tourists are here. Could you take care of them?"

The sound of splashing water from inside the house came to an abrupt halt.

The middle-aged man, whom Duan Fei had seen many times, poked his head out and looked calmly at Sun Yu outside the door.

The man was very tall. His thick eyebrows were knitted together like a pair of handcuffs that could never be unlocked.

He looked fierce and menacing, with a knife scar over his left eye. He was the kind of person who would be hailed as a boss the moment he joined a gang; you couldn’t help but feel it was a waste of such a face for him not to be in the criminal underworld.

His body was covered in bulging muscles, so large you’d wonder if he was on steroids, though his family’s circumstances probably wouldn’t allow for it.

The man didn’t let Sun Yu in. Instead, he crouched down to look at his son, then glanced expressionlessly at Duan Fei and Jinghong standing behind him.

"Just the two of them?" the man asked.

Contrary to his fierce appearance, the man’s tone was exceptionally gentle, giving him the air of a tough man with a tender heart.

"Yep, just two," Sun Yu replied cheerfully.

"Go ahead and pick any room for them, whichever one you like is fine. Um... have you eaten yet?"

"We’ve eaten."

"Go on, then. I’ll be in my room. Don’t come looking for me unless it’s important."

Standing at the doorway, Sun Yu tried to peer past the man to see what was inside, but his father blocked the view, so he couldn’t see a thing.

Duan Fei also tried to get a look, but even on his tiptoes, all he could see was a wet patch on the floor behind the man. Anything further was obscured by a door curtain.

The man paid no mind to Duan Fei’s actions.

He ruffled Sun Yu’s hair and said, "Alright, off you go. I still have to give your Mom her bath, so you should get to bed early."

"Can I—"

"Go rest."

The man’s voice was still gentle, but it now carried the unyielding authority of a father.

Sighing in resignation, Sun Yu watched the door close in front of him. He turned his head to Duan Fei and Jinghong and said, "That’s my dad. He’s a pretty cold person, right? Anyway, I’ll take you to see my treasure trove!"

With a wave of his little hand, Sun Yu led the two of them running down the hallway.

Unlike the first half of the instance, none of the rooms here were locked; they could all be opened easily.

Although every room had the same layout, the contents of each one were completely different.

Through the windows that faced the hallway, Duan Fei could see that some rooms were filled to the brim with books, some were piled high with sponges and other soft materials, some contained crudely made dolls, and others held what looked like pretty decent snacks.

It seemed that before the workers left, they had gathered up most of the items, giving each room its own distinct theme and turning the place into a veritable children’s wonderland.

Duan Fei was getting excited just looking at the rooms, but Jinghong was beside herself with glee. Pinching Duan Fei’s hand, she asked, "Does that hurt? You’re not dreaming, are you?"

"Jinghong, could you maybe pinch your own hand?"

"I’m afraid I’ll wake myself up! This place is just too amazing!"

The three of them then sprang into action, moving an old video game console into one room and bringing along a huge stash of creamy milk candies and cartons of flavored milk.

An endless supply of comic books, all the soda you could drink, snacks for every meal, and most importantly...

No one to tell you when to go to bed!

For that reason alone, Duan Fei felt like another one of his childhood dreams was coming true!

"Duan Fei, let’s not leave today. Let’s just live here!" Jinghong said while munching on some Tang Monk’s Flesh.

"Deal! Let’s have a party!"

"Party, party!"

Picking up a comic book, Duan Fei realized it was a series he used to love. He never expected to find a physical copy here.

After all, in the real world, most books had been completely digitized. Physical books were becoming rarer and rarer, a nearly extinct medium.

Feeling the satisfying weight of the book in his hands and breathing in the familiar scent of ink, Duan Fei nodded in satisfaction and continued to read.

Meanwhile, the man had finished washing his wife.

His wife was now like a lifeless puppet, her body covered in stitched-up wounds that were shocking to behold.

Her once-lovely face was now like a mask, completely devoid of life.

It wasn’t just his wife; the man’s own hands were also extremely stiff, and they throbbed with a piercing pain whenever it rained.

「It had been a year since the car accident.」

The cause of the accident had been determined: someone had sabotaged his brake lines, causing him to crash on the way to the hospital with his wife.

Fortunately, his wife and son survived.

Unfortunately, his son lost a year of his memory, and his wife became brain-dead, a lifeless puppet.

The insurance company had planned to drag out the claim, waiting for the two of them to die, but a righteous reporter exposed the story, causing a massive public outcry.

The financial regulators personally stepped in, delivering a full suite of fines and industry sanctions that forced the insurance company to pay out the accident and medical compensation to the man, allowing him and his wife to undergo surgery and survive.

His wife was still alive, albeit in a vegetative state. The doctors said there was a minuscule chance she might wake up, but they advised him not to get his hopes up.

They also said the chances of her waking up would be slightly higher if she could return to a place where they had once lived.

So, he had returned to this place, wanting to care for his wife here and wait for the day she might awaken.

But the real problem, paradoxically, was Sun Yu.

He had lost a year’s worth of memories due to a head injury.

And from the day he recovered...

...he had been saying that he could see things other people couldn’t.

At first, the father thought Sun Yu was just imagining companions out of loneliness, but as time went on, he gradually felt that something was seriously wrong.

For instance, his son would say there was an ashen-faced man sitting in the security booth, diligently standing guard every day.

The reason they always had hot water was because someone was helping with the maintenance.

The floors were always clean because an old man was helping to sweep.

The food in the cafeteria was cooked by a socially anxious woman.

But the problem was...

...only he, his wife, and Sun Yu lived in this apartment complex.

So where were all these other people coming from?

And every so often, Sun Yu would bring people over, calling them "tourists," and ask him to assign them rooms.

But he had never once seen these tourists.

’Are they still here?’

He could go along with his son, but he felt the boy’s symptoms were becoming more and more dangerous.

’This can’t go on. Once the snow melts, I have to take him down the mountain to see a doctor.’

Opening the door, the father walked out of his room and moved silently toward the noisiest room.

Through the glass, he saw Sun Yu playing video games by himself, eating snacks and drinking soda by himself, and reading comic books by himself.

Even though he was alone, he acted as if three people were in the room, letting out happy laughs from time to time.

Slowly backing away, the father finally made up his mind.

’When the snow melts, we’re going down the mountain. Definitely.’
