There Must Be Something Wrong With This Game!

Chapter 197 - 63: What a Freaking Surprise

The rewards for the seven tasks varied, but the jobs themselves were simple, and the returns were quite generous.

Unlike Level 0 Residents, who had to live on the razor’s edge just to earn Morality, Level 4 citizens could acquire a large amount of it in less than an hour just by performing a few simple jobs.

Furthermore, when he opened his personal terminal, Duan Fei discovered that many more services were available to him.

Beyond the basic Mewtwo experiences, options depraved enough to shatter a person’s sanity began to surface. The entire Moral Code started to reveal its most immoral side to Duan Fei. The names of many services alone were enough to make one’s skin crawl.

Even more terrifying, some Level 0 Residents had become commodities. Anonymous listings were flying everywhere; for just a few Morality, one could purchase a "unique experience."

Duan Fei frowned as he browsed the listings. The entire Moral Code, he realized, was a cesspool.

’Whoever created this system,’ he thought, ’is an absolute madman.’

Just as he was about to browse further, he heard a concerned voice ask, "Is something wrong, sir? Why have you stopped moving?"

"I’m fine..."

Turning around, Duan Fei saw the saleswoman who had helped him earlier standing behind him with a strange expression on her face.

Although she was looking at him, her gaze was like that of a predator eyeing its prey, her eyes filled with greed.

"Mr. Duan, why don’t you come with me to a room and rest for a bit? You don’t look so well."

"No, thank you. I’m fine."

"No, you’re not."

Duan Fei turned to leave, but the saleswoman had already seized his arm.

Her arm looked slender, but it was a high-grade cybernetic prosthetic. Terrifying strength coiled around Duan Fei’s arm, holding him fast and sending a powerful sense of danger through him.

It wasn’t just the saleswoman. The people around them also began to close in. An old man stared right at Duan Fei, drooling as he muttered, "Five hundred thousand Morality..."

’Five hundred thousand Morality... Is there a bounty on me? But why?’

Duan Fei touched the personal terminal on his person, and a dawning realization hit him.

There were countless Level 0 Residents, but not many were promoted to Level 1 citizen or higher.

Becoming a Level 1 citizen, the lowest tier, cost a hundred thousand Morality—a sum most people could never save in their entire lives. Those who managed to accumulate that much, resisting all the system’s temptations, were undoubtedly the cream of the crop.

The Moral Code’s processing power wasn’t infinite, so it could only monitor subjects who warranted attention.

And who warranted more attention than its citizens?

’Don’t ask why. The answer is simply that you’re too outstanding, so the Moral Code has taken an interest in you.’

The Moral Code must have a complex system for assessing danger levels. His pausing the tasks, browsing illicit content, even his heart rate and breathing—all of it would be monitored, judged, and then assigned a rating.

His actions had already flagged him as a dangerous individual. Getting a bounty placed on his head was only to be expected.

"This society is so twisted," Duan Fei said. "Miss, look into my eyes."

He removed his Void Glasses, and a single glance from his uncovered eyes made the woman scream.

He easily broke free from her grasp. With another glance, a burly man who was lunging for him immediately collapsed to the ground, screaming in agony.

Despite their extensive cybernetic modifications, they could still perceive the Void’s existence. They were still "human."

And his Eye of the Void was the perfect counter to those with weak Spiritual Power.

With no cooldown, an eye that could strike on sight was a superweapon in a place like this. A single look, and his targets could only clutch their heads and scream.

Duan Fei pulled a Type-A drone from his backpack and slipped on the control bracelet. While searching for a sewer entrance, he sent the drone into the air to provide cover.

A moment later, the drone’s voice came from the bracelet: "Nearest sewer entrance located. Two kilometers from your current position. Location has been marked. Optimal route calculated."

A laser beam shot down from the drone, projecting a path for Duan Fei to follow.

"Drone, engage automated escort mode. You are authorized to use electromagnetic interference."

"Acknowledged. Switching to automated mode. Caution: A squad of Law Enforcers has appeared ahead."

The drone shot forward, accelerating rapidly. Once it was directly above the Law Enforcer squad, it stopped on a dime and began to emit an electromagnetic pulse.

The invisible electromagnetic interference burst outward, causing even Duan Fei’s personal terminal to lose its signal.

The Law Enforcer squad ahead fared even worse. The interference from the Rongge Company drone fried the circuitry in their bodies, allowing Duan Fei to run right over them as he continued his sprint.

1.8 kilometers.

Detecting the drone’s electromagnetic interference capabilities, Luminous Heavy Industry raised its alert level.

A squad of Luminous Heavy Industry drones launched in response, swarming toward the Type-A drone.

Although their technology couldn’t match Rongge Company’s, this was their home turf.

Moreover, their technicians had already analyzed the Type-A drone’s potential strategic value, so they had only one mission.

Capture the drone for further analysis of its value.

This order made the drones’ attacks somewhat less aggressive, which gave Duan Fei an opening to escape.

"Locked on by twenty-one drones. Counterattack success probability: 1.37%. Abandoning counterattack mode. Switching to Protector mode."

The drone landed on Duan Fei’s shoulder and began to change modes.

Although it felt light, the drone’s body actually weighed fifty kilograms.

The reason it felt so light was a piece of Rongge Company’s black-box technology inside it: a gravity system.

By using the gravity system, the drone’s fifty-kilogram weight could be reduced to five kilograms, and it could even reduce the user’s own weight along with it.

"User, please grant me partial Equipment access. I require your phone and Spider Suit."

"Take it."

"Thank you. Recalculating route... Calculation complete."

After linking with Duan Fei’s phone, the drone’s performance was enhanced even further.

A phone from the Rongge Company was a supercomputer in its own right, containing an incredible amount of processing power. This allowed the drone’s onboard AI to effortlessly calculate the attack trajectories of the enemy drones and evade them.

A strand of webbing shot out from the Spider Suit on Duan Fei’s back. The incredibly tough line latched onto a nearby skyscraper and rapidly retracted, pulling Duan Fei forward in a wild sprint.

"User, prepare for combat. Sniper ahead."

He instantly activated his [Spiritual Armor]. Spiritual Energy materialized into a protective shell, enveloping him.

Then, he activated [Substitute]. Some entity was forcibly yanked into his Crowbar. After a moment of silence, a voice emanated from it. "Duan Someone? Why the hell is it you? Why the hell is it *you*!?"

"...Evil God?"

"It’s me! Why am I here? Did you summon me? So why in the world would you summon *me*!?"

At that moment, Duan Fei really wished he had a translator...

What a freaking surprise!
