Inside the Memory Bank.

The Director stood before a massive monitor, watching Duan Fei charge straight for the bank.

The Moral Code’s processing power was being redirected. A massive amount of it was focused on Duan Fei, analyzing his operational logic and objectives, finally reaching a conclusion.

Without satellite weaponry, this enemy could not be eliminated.

The cybernetics on his body were just a disguise. He hadn’t undergone any cybernetic modification surgeries. This strength, far exceeding that of a normal person, was inexplicable.

However, judging by the Moral Code’s reaction, it seemed to know how to deal with this kind of person. It had reacted quickly, directly deploying satellite weaponry.

It wasn’t the most advanced type, but it was enough to show how seriously the Moral Code was taking this guy.

The Director tried to search for information on the matter, but he came up empty.

He was already a Level 7 Citizen; there was almost nothing within the Moral Code that he couldn’t see.

Now, to be blocked from something that clearly existed... this feeling of being excluded made the Director understand that he was still just an outsider to the true circle of power.

Gazing helplessly at the screen, the Director felt a tinge of sorrow.

Even after becoming a Level 7 Citizen, even after being completely cut off from the lower classes, his sense of powerlessness had only grown stronger.

The more he craved to climb higher, the more he became aware of the chasm—an uncrossable gap that lay before him, one he could never surmount in his lifetime.

Sighing again, he activated his communicator and spoke to everyone inside the bank. "All personnel in the bank, cease your work and evacuate immediately. I repeat, cease your work and evacuate immediately. Anyone who disobeys will bear the consequences."

Most people began to evacuate, but a few with ulterior motives quietly stayed behind, preparing to engage in some unsavory business.

The Director showed these people no courtesy.

He could tolerate some petty theft on a normal day, but to do so at a time like this was a direct challenge to his authority.

He pressed a button. Small drones were deployed. Palm-sized, self-destructing drones flew toward the stragglers and detonated, leaving not even a trace of them behind.

After eliminating everyone, the Director performed a consciousness upload, then backed up the entire contents of the bank. He took the backup and went to the lounge.

Soon, this backup would be the only one left.

The endless class stagnation had worn him down. The omnipresent Moral Code had exhausted him. Right now, he just wanted to find someone who could shatter everything, even if it was some utterly evil bastard. He didn’t care.

’A world that never changes is just so boring.’

Before long, someone appeared.

Apparently deciding the main entrance was too slow, the newcomer cleaved the bank’s outer wall in two, then leaped through the gap and landed in front of the Director.

Before Duan Fei could speak, the Director raised his hands and said, as if to himself, "Oh, I’m so scared. I just backed up all the memories in the bank, please don’t kill me."

"...What are you talking about?"

"I can’t take it! I’m too scared! I have to fight back! Die!"

The Director charged clumsily at Duan Fei, who subconsciously swung his Crowbar and smashed the man’s head in.

Staring at the corpse leaking machine oil, Duan Fei tucked the storage device from the man’s hand into his backpack, confused. He then asked, "Does anyone know what was wrong with him?"

"No idea. Cyberpsychosis?" Yan Yuan said.

"I don’t know either, but that’s just how you humans are, even when you’ve been mechanized," the Evil God said.

Duan Fei shrugged. The drone’s voice sounded again: "Incoming Energy strike detected. Please seek shelter immediately."

With a sigh, Duan Fei tore open a nearby sewer entrance and jumped in, beginning to navigate the labyrinthine tunnels below.

Behind him, the satellite strike finally arrived.

A terrifying beam of light descended from the sky, vaporizing the nuke-resistant bank in an instant.

The attack pierced through the ground, the accumulated solar energy transforming into the gaze of the Death God as it bored through the earth.

The ground melted, lava boiled. The Memory Bank that once stood here, along with the Director’s corpse, was utterly obliterated, leaving behind only a bottomless pit.

Although it caused a massive commotion, the incident was suppressed with incredible speed.

All news related to the event was scrubbed from the internet. Luminous Heavy Industry opportunely announced a few discounts on their cybernetics, and just like that, everyone’s attention was diverted.

The very next day, a construction crew filled in the deep pit, and a new Memory Bank rose from the ground. Everything that had happened became a fleeting memory, instantly forgotten.

Except by Duan Fei and the others.

Back in Chang’an City, the Evil God within Duan Fei’s Crowbar soon departed.

The more powerful the being, the harder it is to summon, and the shorter its stay.

Beings with "god" in their name are rarely weak. It was a massive stroke of luck that the Evil God could be summoned at all, and Jack Rabbit deserved credit for it being able to stay for so long.

With the Evil God’s disappearance, Jack Rabbit’s Spiritual Power was also depleted, and it reluctantly prepared to leave.

Before leaving, he chatted with Duan Fei about some good recent horror movies and suggested that the next time he was summoned, they should all get together for another Night of Horror Movies in Love City.

After things returned to normal, Duan Fei stretched his limbs and went to find Elder Father in the city center.

The old man was the same as always.

The massive brain in the vat bubbled continuously, its ubiquitous eyes staring at Duan Fei, full of scrutiny.

After a long moment, the Elder’s synthesized voice rang out: "You surprise me, Descender."

"In what way?"

"In every way. Other Descenders have appeared before, you know. But they were usually gunned down by Law Enforcers before they could even get their hands on a personal terminal. You, on the other hand... in just one day, the trouble you’ve stirred up is beyond my imagination."

"It was alright," Duan Fei said.

"Alright? This is the first time I’ve heard someone describe winning a million Moral Credits in one night, escaping an encirclement by Luminous Heavy Industry unscathed, and destroying the Memory Bank on the side as ’alright.’"

"You know what happened up there?"

"This old man has his own eyes and ears. Never mind that. With the Memory Bank destroyed, Hyena must be heartbroken."

For some reason, when the Elder mentioned the destruction of the Memory Bank, Duan Fei didn’t sense any sadness from him at all. In fact, he seemed almost relieved.

Glancing at the backup in his backpack, Duan Fei decided, ’It’s probably best not to mention this to him.’

After all, in a godforsaken place like Abyss, every NPC had their own agenda.

Duan Fei didn’t think Elder Father would try to screw him over. After all, he still had the [Savior] title, and the Elder didn’t seem to bear him any ill will.

But whether someone would act against you and whether they held any malice were two different things. Dr. Manhattan didn’t have any ill will toward Rorschach, but he still blew him to smithereens.

Before long, Hyena, having gotten the news, returned.

Confirming that the Memory Bank had really been blown up, the mercenary looked like he’d just lost his parents, so devastated he couldn’t even cry.

Elder Father and Anna naturally went to console him, but as an observer, Duan Fei noticed that neither of them showed a single trace of sadness.

On the contrary, they actually seemed happy about it.

’There’s something fishy going on here.’

’Why are you guys so happy?’
