Duan Fei was up early the next morning to get ready.
He stretched his body, did some Tai Chi with Lear and Lone Ranger, and ate the breakfast the Bartender had prepared. After greeting a drained-looking Hyena and taking a luxurious shower, he sat down by the holographic TV and solemnly turned it on.
The TV instantly lit up, showing the current situation at the Glazed Tower.
Artillery fire raged and bullets rained down as countless mercenary squads assaulted the Glazed Tower. The sheer ferocity of the scene was comparable to a full-blown war.
The entire Glazed Tower was shielded by a force field. This advanced technology was a flagship product of Luminous Heavy Industry, capable of distorting most magnetic fields and even the shockwaves from missile explosions, making the Glazed Tower a veritable Tower of Sighs.
But for dramatic effect, the Glazed Tower’s force field was made to look as if it could shatter at any moment, as though it might be sliced open in the next second.
Too bad for them—it was a total bait-and-switch.
A short while later, Anna came over looking refreshed and invigorated, dragging the spent Hyena with her. Her well-developed muscles shimmered like polished obsidian under the sunlight.
After downing a glass of eggnog from the Bartender, Anna watched the screen and remarked, "The Puppet Legion has been deployed."
"Are they that good?" Duan Fei asked, sipping his cocktail.
"Extremely. They’re ranked first locally and seventh in the world. They won’t admit it, but everyone knows they’re the personal mercenary legion of Luminous Heavy Industry."
"Luminous Heavy Industry has a long reach. But surely they’re not in it for the paltry sum they’d make as mercenaries, right?"
Anna raised an eyebrow in agreement. "Exactly. They’re primarily for weapons testing. The ethical guidelines prohibit private, large-scale weapons trials without an application. But the approval process is painfully slow, so they’ve found ways to circumvent the rules and use mercenaries to conduct their experiments."
Duan Fei nodded.
’The framers of the ethical guidelines were probably looking for a silver bullet to solve a host of systemic issues,’ he thought, ’like bureaucracy, unchecked capitalism, and the abuse of power.’
’But it’s impossible to use one set of laws to restrict all of that. People are incredibly resourceful; they’ll find loopholes in even the best systems.’
Before long, the rest of the team had gathered. They watched the battle on the television, each analyzing Luminous Heavy Industry’s strength from their own unique perspective.
Although each member had a different area of expertise and looked at the situation from a different angle, they all reached the same, surprisingly unanimous conclusion.
Luminous Heavy Industry was practically invincible.
Hyena focused on Luminous Heavy Industry’s mechanical repair capabilities, Anna on their heavy mechs, Lone Ranger on their counter-reconnaissance, and Duan Fei on their command strategy.
From every angle, Luminous Heavy Industry was terrifyingly perfect. Their countermeasures were executed in a systematic, orderly fashion, which was the very source of the confidence that allowed them to dare broadcast the battle live.
A slogan like "Real Men Climb 300 Floors" sounded a bit ridiculous, but seeing the reality of it, you realized it was a nigh-impossible task.
Seeing Luminous Heavy Industry repel another attack with the heavy cannons mounted on the walls, Duan Fei sighed.
Hearing Duan Fei’s sigh, Lone Ranger chuckled. "What’s the matter? Run up against your own ’Wall of Sighs’?"
Seeing Duan Fei seemingly out of ideas filled Lone Ranger with a secret glee. ’It’s like a slacker seeing the top student fail an exam.’
’It’s normal for me to flunk, I don’t study. But you’re the brainiac, so how are you this pathetic too?’
Over Lone Ranger’s quiet muttering, Duan Fei said, "It’s nothing. This is all too simple. It doesn’t feel very challenging."
"...I’m warning you, Duan Someone. There are rules to showing off, you know. Don’t go breaking them."
"No, it really is simple. In fact, you could say it’s just a common flaw of capitalism."
"What do you mean?" the Bartender asked curiously. "Could you elaborate? I’m particularly interested in critiques of capitalism and corporate structures."
"It’s simple. The standard operating procedure in capitalism is ’you get paid, you do the work.’ And since Luminous Heavy Industry is so cheap, they probably don’t pay overtime. We can use that as our opening."
"For instance?" the Bartender asked, pouring Duan Fei another cocktail.
Duan Fei had the Bartender pause the TV and pointed to a Luminous Heavy Industry employee on the screen. "There. Their uniforms identify them as maintenance personnel. So, all we have to do is forge some uniforms and blend in."
"That’s it?" Hyena asked incredulously. "What if we get inspected? What if they’re using ID recognition? What if—"
"Trust me, kid. We get ready now, we might even be able to get in by noon."
While the Bartender helped prepare the uniforms, Duan Fei closed his eyes and continued to formulate the plan in his mind.
The more detailed he made the plan, the more his Talent allowed him to see its flaws, which in turn allowed him to patch up the holes and make it even more perfect.
Though he could never make it one hundred percent foolproof, he could make his plan as close to perfect as possible.
Once the Bartender had finished whipping up a few uniforms, Duan Fei had everyone change clothes. He then took out his own maintenance toolbox and gave it to Hyena.
This maintenance kit had been a piece of loot from his first dungeon, but he’d never unlocked any repair-related Skills. Besides, he was already planning to go down a summoning path, so he had no use for it anymore.
After inspecting the contents of the toolbox, Hyena exclaimed, "This is some seriously good stuff! Where’d you get it? The craftsmanship is so intricate they’re practically works of art. Thanks a lot!"
"You’re welcome. By the way, I’m lending you this. Remember, it’s only temporary."
When he took the drone and phone Duan Fei handed him, Hyena was truly stunned.
Duan Fei’s drone and phone were exquisitely designed. Unlike Luminous Heavy Industry, which focused its development on firepower, these two pieces of tech were geared completely toward support functions.
Luminous Heavy Industry’s drones were heavy-firepower platforms with some Reconnaissance functions tacked on, whereas Duan Fei’s drone and phone took Reconnaissance, communication, and jamming capabilities to the absolute extreme.
Moreover, neither item was difficult to operate. Hyena quickly figured out how to use them, sensing that this equipment was truly extraordinary.
It’s hard enough to make something simple to use. It’s even harder to make it simple while preserving so much functionality.
"Where in the world did you get these? They’re just too... too... too sophisticated!" Hyena cradled the devices, unable to put them down.
"Don’t worry about that now," Duan Fei said. "Let’s go. It’s time to sneak in."
On the live broadcast, Duan Fei saw that the first wave of the attack was over. The mercenaries had made a painful retreat, and the Glazed Tower remained standing.
The camera operator had deliberately chosen a low-angle shot, making the Glazed Tower look like a terrestrial deity. Its majestic form seemed to channel Holy Light from the heavens, which in turn sent Luminous Heavy Industry’s stock soaring.
Looking at the stock price, Duan Fei turned to the Bartender. "Can you trade stocks here?"
"I can," the Bartender said calmly.
"Then put it all on Luminous Heavy Industry."
"To short?"
"Short it. With leverage."
Seeing the one million Morality points Duan Fei transferred over, the Bartender gave a slight nod to show he understood.
Once the Bartender had set up the trade, Duan Fei tossed the uniforms to the others. "Let’s go," he said. "Time to take down the Glazed Tower."
