There Must Be Something Wrong With This Game!
Chapter 69 - 2: The Night is Short, Fall in Love, Young ManAfter Jinghong left, Duan Fei looked around the room. He had a faint feeling that something was off, but he couldn’t put his finger on what it was.
The house was too tidy, and some of the furnishings looked much newer. It felt as if someone had bought him a whole new set.
’Don’t tell me Jinghong bought me a new set while I was sleeping? How is that even possible?’
Shaking the thought away, Duan Fei felt it was too disrespectful to Jinghong.
He got up, ate breakfast, and handled his work for the day. This involved logging into several games, testing them until he found a bunch of bugs, and sending the reports over. Duan Fei could already picture the programmers on the other end rubbing their shiny bald heads, getting ready to summon a divine dragon to beat him up through the internet.
’Sorry, but a bug Constitution is just that buggy.’
After quickly finishing his work, Duan Fei immediately lay down on his bed, put on his virtual helmet, and entered the world of *Abyss*.
He had spent half the night reading the forums, which filled him with anticipation for the game’s next stage: the cities.
However, a Passport to the cities required Level 10, and Duan Fei was only Level 7. Based on the amount of experience he was gaining, he would need to complete at least six more dungeons to reach Level 10.
’Six more... Is there a faster way?’
After searching the forums for a bit, Duan Fei actually found a post.
"Recruiting players for a permanent-type dungeon. Key provided by us, Icefield Walker.
The dungeon is Love City. The city itself has a large number of side quests that can be completed for a massive amount of experience.
All items obtained by participants during this time will belong to them, but there is one prerequisite: you must assist us in completing some tasks within the dungeon.
You must be active in-game for at least one hour per day for seven consecutive days. Time will be accelerated upon entry, meaning you will need to stay in-game for four hours. Overtime will be compensated separately."
"Payment is 100 Abyss Coins per hour, with no Level requirement. Payment is settled automatically each day. Interested parties can DM me. The key will be provided after adding me as a friend."
Permanent-type dungeons were a relatively uncommon type of dungeon in *Abyss*.
Most dungeons were divided into tiers and types based on their danger level, and you could only join them within a specified time frame to participate in the dungeon’s scenario.
Permanent-type dungeons, on the other hand, were large-scale dungeons with no fixed quests and, in most cases, a society of NPCs.
These types of dungeons were often managed by a major organization. Once a guild took control of that organization, the entire permanent-type dungeon effectively became the guild’s property, allowing them to continuously harvest resources from it.
It was said that all the major player guilds had their own permanent-type dungeons where they had established bases and produced various unique goods.
After looking up some information, Duan Fei discovered that while Icefield Walker wasn’t a top-tier guild, it was still a formidable force.
However, they had recently had some friction with another guild, "Eternal Night." Eternal Night was a guild of similar strength to Icefield Walker, so both sides were actively preparing for war.
Although the recruitment notice didn’t explicitly state it, Duan Fei felt that Icefield Walker’s situation was likely not good.
This recruitment post was basically a public declaration that they were trying to conquer Love City. They were clearly desperate, willing to hire anyone they could get their hands on, even resorting to paying wages to attract talent.
Considering the pros and cons, Duan Fei felt that Icefield Walker’s strategy was sound, while Eternal Night’s counter-strategy would simply be to send in spies.
’Of course, Icefield Walker’s actions could also be a cover for their real objective. Love City might just be bait to attract Eternal Night’s attention.’
After mulling over both possibilities, Duan Fei felt he’d had a good mental workout.
Using things like this to exercise his thinking skills was one of Duan Fei’s habits. He didn’t have any other motive for it; he just found it fun.
His mental exercise complete, Duan Fei sent a private message to the poster, who replied instantly, "Add me. I’m Nemo."
"Duan Someone."
"...You’re Duan Someone? You were in the Holy Grail War a while back, right?"
"And you are?"
"I’m Nemo. Ah, forget it. I didn’t have much of a presence back then, so it’s fine if you don’t remember. I can’t believe you saw that post and are offering to help. It must be fate. Let me ask first, you’re not with Eternal Night, are you?"
"I don’t know a single person from Eternal Night. But you don’t actually think you can expose a spy just by asking, do you?"
"Of course not." Nemo chuckled. "I’m just following orders from the guild master. Our guild master is super fussy and makes everyone go through the standard procedure. Okay, friend request accepted. I’ve sent you the key. It’s only usable for seven days, after which it will self-destruct."
This detail confirmed to Duan Fei that Icefield Walker was genuinely trying to acquire the large-scale dungeon, Love City. It also indirectly proved that they were in big trouble.
But that had nothing to do with him. He just wanted to happily grind for experience in Love City and get to the cities sooner to enjoy more features.
Upon entering the game, just as Duan Fei finished loading in, a fiery red bird swooped over and nuzzled against him, chirping, "Master, what took you so long to show up! I was so bored all by myself."
Watching Yan Yuan act cute against his face, Duan Fei said thoughtfully, "Should I find you a companion?"
"I want a female! She has to have a beautiful tail, and her tears have to turn into diamonds that SPARKLE AND SHINE!"
"If I may be so blunt, I don’t think a creature like that exists in nature. How about we relax your standards for a mate a bit? We could pick a lucky winner from the ’inanimate object’ category?"
"Master, do you even hear yourself right now?"
As they spoke, Nemo’s key arrived.
Picking up the damp key that had fallen onto the carpet, Duan Fei saw that it was green.
There was a countdown timer on the key. It had started the moment he received it, ticking down from seven days.
’An item that self-destructs in seven days... Icefield Walker probably doesn’t want other people getting any more intel. Their guild master is pretty cautious.’
’Of course, you could also feel a wave of fussiness coming from it.’
Holding the key, Duan Fei opened the nearest fire door and stepped through.
Behind the door was nothing but darkness.
On the floor, green LED lights formed a massive arrow, instructing Duan Fei to follow it and stand at its tip.
The moment he stepped onto the tip of the arrow, he felt the floor beneath him begin to descend. Pink hearts appeared on the walls on either side, and then a cute girl appeared on screens to his left and right, shouting in a cheerful voice, "Welcome to Love City, Descender!"
"The night is short, so fall in love, young one!"
