Chapter 54: Chapter 54: Drank Fake Alcohol
If there was a problem with this bottle of wine...
Then what could the problem be?
Fake wine?
Swapped for something cheaper?
While Chen Mo was pondering the cause of his bad luck, the waiter poured some of the wine into a decanter to let it breathe.
This would improve the flavor when they drank it later.
"Please, enjoy."
The waiter gave a slight smile and prepared to leave.
"Excuse me, can I pay the bill now?"
Chen Mo suddenly raised a hand and asked the waiter.
Since he suspected there was something wrong with the wine, he had to pay for it first.
Once he had paid the bill, the bottle would belong to him.
If it was fake, they would have to compensate him.
If he hadn’t paid, the restaurant could find other ways to avoid responsibility. It wasn’t a sure thing.
"Of course."
The waiter was slightly taken aback, but he immediately smiled and nodded.
"Just a moment, I’m going to go pay the bill."
Chen Mo stood up, smiled at Feng Yu, and then went to the front desk to pay.
Feng Yu was a little surprised but didn’t think much of it.
’Maybe Chen Mo was worried I’d try to pay?’
’So he paid for it in advance?’
Two and a half minutes later, Chen Mo returned to his seat with a receipt in hand.
The waiter also picked up the decanter and poured two glasses of wine for Chen Mo and Feng Yu.
"Thank you for the two-star banner and for yesterday. Let’s have a toast."
He formally expressed his gratitude to Feng Yu and raised his wine glass.
"Oh, we’re friends. No need for all that."
Feng Yu smiled beautifully and also raised her glass, clinking it against his.
Chen Mo brought the glass to his nose and took a sniff. It smelled quite fragrant.
He swirled the red wine slightly in the glass, then took a small sip.
After a small taste, Chen Mo felt the wine was pretty good.
The quality seemed even better than the red wine he used to drink with his classmates back in college.
But he rarely drank red wine, and he’d certainly never had one this expensive.
He wasn’t sure if the taste and mouthfeel were what they should be.
But that was normal.
If the wine was so fake that even a novice like him could tell the quality was off with a single sip, then how could they possibly stay in the fake wine business?
’Since it went "DING," there’s no way it’s a mistake.’
Chen Mo chose to trust his constitution.
After all, it had never let him down before.
He saw Feng Yu, sitting across from him, also take a small sip, with no unusual expression on her face.
"What do you think of the wine?"
Chen Mo asked her casually.
"It’s better than what I’ve had before. But then again, it’s so expensive."
Feng Yu savored the taste and mouthfeel of the wine for a moment before giving her assessment.
’Looks like her judgment is the same as mine.’
’The quality of this wine probably isn’t low.’
’But it’s definitely not the 50,000-yuan bottle of Romanée-Conti that I ordered.’
Chen Mo swirled the red wine in his glass and sniffed its aroma like an expert.
"There’s something wrong with this wine."
He said in a low voice, putting on a profound, know-it-all expression.
"No way."
Hearing this, Feng Yu froze, her eyes widening in surprise.
This was a three-star Michelin restaurant.
It was very expensive and extremely famous in Modu.
And Chen Mo was saying there was a problem with their wine?
’I didn’t taste anything wrong with it.’
’Could it be that Chen Mo knows about red wine?’
"This is definitely not Romanée-Conti. They’ve swapped it for something cheaper."
Chen Mo said with a small smile, his tone firm and confident.
"Are you sure?"
Feng Yu’s expression turned serious as well.
If what Chen Mo was saying was true, she might just have to call a colleague from another department to investigate.
"I’m almost certain. I’ve done a lot of research on red wine. My family has a winery. I practically grew up playing in wine barrels."
Chen Mo nodded lightly. His golden finger had never been wrong.
’When you’re out and about, you make your own persona.’
’Whatever identity you need, you just make it up on the spot.’
Hearing this, Feng Yu gave him a suspicious look.
’Is Chen Mo’s family really that influential?’
’Did he become a delivery driver because his family fell on hard times?’
"Waiter."
He raised his hand and called a waiter over.
"Hello, sir. Is there anything I can help you with?"
The waiter looked at him with a polite smile.
"Get your manager over here."
Chen Mo said to the waiter in a calm voice.
"Sir, are our dishes not to your liking?"
The waiter was taken aback for a moment, then quickly bent slightly at the waist and asked with a smile.
"Just get the manager."
Chen Mo shook his head, not answering his question.
"Alright, please wait a moment."
With a curious look in his eyes, the waiter turned and went to get the manager.
Two and a half minutes later, a middle-aged man in his forties wearing a suit vest walked over.
He had a round face, a buzz cut, and a bit of a beard.
"Sir, I hear you were looking for me?"
The restaurant manager looked at Chen Mo politely.
"There’s a problem with your wine."
Chen Mo got straight to the point, telling him directly that there was something wrong with the wine.
At these words, the manager’s expression changed slightly, and a flicker of nervousness crossed his eyes.
The manager quickly scanned the surrounding diners and, seeing no one was paying attention, breathed a small sigh of relief.
"Sir, we are a three-star Michelin restaurant. Our wines are supplied directly by top brands. How could there possibly be a problem?"
"The taste and flavor of a wine can be affected by the decanting time, the food you’re eating, and even your personal palate. Perhaps the dishes you ordered are interfering with the wine’s flavor?"
"How about this? I’ll get you a better bottle of wine, on the house. What do you think?"
After a moment of quick thinking, he explained to Chen Mo in a hushed voice.
And he offered to replace Chen Mo’s wine with a better one for free.
With something like wine, unless you’re a true professional, most people’s experience is just a general, hard-to-quantify impression of the taste.
The palate is influenced by many factors.
In short, his plan was to first offer a few excuses to sway Chen Mo’s judgment.
As for the free replacement wine, that was part of his little scheme.
"I’m sure the problem is with this bottle!"
Chen Mo’s tone was firm. He glanced at the manager and continued, "Besides, I’ve already paid the bill. I don’t need you to replace it."
He waved the receipt in front of the manager’s eyes.
He knew exactly what little scheme the manager was hatching.
’He’s just trying to use the offer of a free, better bottle to get this one back.’
’Once he takes it away and destroys it, I won’t have any evidence.’
Seeing the receipt in Chen Mo’s hand, the manager started to get anxious.
"Sir, our restaurant has an excellent reputation in Modu. You can’t just slander our wine based on your personal taste."
"This has happened before. We chose to call the police, and it was later confirmed that the person was deliberately slandering us to extort money."
"Of course, I don’t believe you have the same idea, but we will use legal means to protect our reputation from slander!"
The manager’s tone shifted as he began to imply that Chen Mo was deliberately slandering the restaurant to extort them.
He also mentioned calling the police, seemingly in an attempt to intimidate Chen Mo.
"Of course, it’s possible our food affected your palate. In that case, I’ll take the liberty of comping your meal. The money you paid will be refunded."
After the threat, the manager then offered to waive the bill for him.
This push-and-pull tactic was incredibly well-practiced.
If it had been an ordinary person who wasn’t so sure and confident, they might have been dissuaded by the manager’s words.
After all, taste is indeed a subjective thing.
And most people don’t want to cause trouble and end up at the police station.
"Forget about comping the meal. Since you won’t admit it, just get your boss over here."
Chen Mo saw right through the manager’s little trick and said with a cold laugh.
Judging from the manager’s reaction and behavior, he felt that this fake wine business might be connected to the manager himself.
In that case, it would be better to have the owner handle it directly.
In any case, he was absolutely confident.
"Sir, if you continue to make trouble, we’re going to call the police!"
The manager’s face grew uglier as he threatened him in a hostile tone.
"Threatening me?"
"Calling the police?"
Chen Mo couldn’t help but laugh. ’Looks like this manager still hasn’t realized the gravity of the situation.’
"As it happens, the beautiful lady sitting across from me is an officer. You can talk to her directly."
The corner of Chen Mo’s mouth curled up in a Dragon King smirk.
Watching Chen Mo point to Feng Yu, the manager subconsciously turned his gaze to the woman he had been ignoring the entire time.
As for Feng Yu, she snapped into character in a second, her aura instantly shifting from that of a campus belle to a stern police officer.
She took a black ID holder from her backpack.
She flipped it open and held the identification page up for the manager to see.
When the manager saw Feng Yu’s uniformed picture on the ID, along with the official insignia, his vision suddenly went dark.
His face turned deathly pale in an instant, his expression as ugly as a torn QR code.
The manager glanced at Feng Yu, his eyes filled with an incredibly complex mix of emotions.
’Seriously, lady?’
’Aren’t you afraid of getting an emergency call when you’re off duty?’
’Couldn’t you just *not* drink?’
’If you hadn’t been drinking, none of this would have happened!’
