Chapter 55: Chapter 55: Want to File a Report? I Can Work Overtime Anytime

"So, can you get the owner over here now?"

After Feng Yu made her authority clear, Chen Mo shot the manager a mocking look.

The man had been threatening to call the police on him at every turn.

Now, with Feng Yu sitting right here, how would the manager handle this?

"Sir, how about we resolve this privately? I promise I’ll give you a satisfactory resolution!"

The manager was in a full-blown panic now, his face pale as he looked at Chen Mo.

He knew just how out of line he’d been—what he’d done was definitely illegal.

That was why he wanted to settle things privately with Chen Mo.

Seeing the manager’s desperate struggle, Chen Mo gave him an indifferent glance and raised his hand.

"Waiter."

He called out, his voice a little loud.

The shout immediately drew the attention of several nearby tables, and all eyes turned in their direction.

Chen Mo’s shout not only attracted the attention of the surrounding customers but also made the manager tremble involuntarily.

"I’ll go get the owner..."

His face deathly pale and his eyes filled with despair, the manager went to get the owner.

Before long, a man of about fifty walked over.

Trailing behind him was the dejected, head-bowed manager.

"Sir, you were looking for me?"

The owner smiled politely at Chen Mo.

The manager had only said a customer was looking for him, not what it was about.

"You’re the owner of this restaurant?"

Chen Mo nodded back at him and asked.

"I am the owner. If there’s anything about our restaurant that’s not to your satisfaction, please don’t hesitate to point it out."

The owner assumed Chen Mo wanted to see him because of an issue with the food or service.

"I ordered a 50,000-yuan bottle of Romanée-Conti from your restaurant. Here’s the bill."

Chen Mo passed the bill to the owner for him to see.

"You can have a taste and see if this is actually Romanée-Conti."

Chen Mo then pointed to the recently opened bottle of Romanée-Conti red wine on the table.

The Romanée-Conti logo was printed clearly on the bottle.

"Hm?"

Hearing this, the owner was taken aback for a moment.

Then his pupils contracted, and a very bad thought suddenly occurred to him.

’Could it be that this customer thinks there’s a problem with the wine?’

He glanced at the manager, who looked utterly finished, and a strong sense of foreboding washed over him.

"Alright, I’ll have a taste."

The owner had someone bring a wine glass, poured a little of the red wine directly from the bottle, and began to taste it seriously.

As the owner of a three-star Michelin restaurant, he was well-versed in the cuisines of various countries around the world, as well as their fine wines.

He was especially knowledgeable about red wine, holding a wine sommelier certificate and being an absolute professional.

Take this Romanée-Conti, for example.

It was no exaggeration to say that all he needed was a sniff and a sip.

And he could immediately identify the wine’s approximate vintage.

As for whether it was genuine or fake, that was child’s play; he’d know in an instant.

He gently swirled the wine glass, then brought his nose to the rim and took a serious sniff.

SNIFF~ SNIFF~

He twitched his nose a few times as the clear aroma of the red wine wafted up to him.

"Hm?"

After catching the scent of the wine in the glass, the owner couldn’t help but freeze for a second.

Because, with his level of expertise, he noticed something was wrong the moment he smelled the aroma.

The aroma was indeed pleasant—not one-dimensional, but layered.

But there was a subtle difference from the aroma of a true Romanée-Conti.

Perhaps this subtle difference would be hard for an ordinary person to discern.

But any professional wine taster would spot the discrepancy immediately.

His expression darkened, and he shot the manager an icy glare.

Feeling the owner’s cold gaze, the manager immediately lowered his head, not daring to meet his eyes.

Chen Mo took in this scene and couldn’t help but smile.

’Looks like the owner has figured it out.’

The owner withdrew his gaze and returned his focus to the wine in the glass.

He took a small sip of the red wine, not swallowing it right away.

Instead, he let it rest in his mouth, savoring it and using his taste buds to pick out the details.

Soon, after just a few short seconds, he swallowed the wine in his mouth and placed the glass on the table.

"Sir, I am sorry!"

Without another word, the owner put down the glass and offered Chen Mo a sincere apology.

"Your manager just accused me of deliberately slandering your restaurant and threatened to call the police."

Seeing that the owner had admitted it, Chen Mo glanced with a smile at the manager, who had his head buried like an ostrich.

"This is our fault. It has nothing to do with you."

The owner shot the manager a harsh glare before forcing a placating smile.

He felt utterly helpless at that moment.

If there were any other way, he really wouldn’t want to admit to something like this.

But unfortunately, there was no other way.

He held an international wine sommelier certificate; one sip was all it took for him to know the wine was fake!

And he wasn’t the only one with such a certificate.

Chen Mo could just go out, find any professional wine taster, and they’d know after a single sip.

Even if he stubbornly refused to admit it, it would be pointless.

So, even though he desperately didn’t want to accept this fact, he had no choice but to admit it.

When Feng Yu heard the owner admit there was a problem with the wine, her eyes widened in utter astonishment as she looked at Chen Mo.

She had been a little skeptical when Chen Mo had so confidently asserted that the wine was bad.

But now, the owner himself had admitted it.

This proved that Chen Mo really knew his red wine!

He was definitely an expert.

’So he wasn’t just making things up. His family really did use to own a winery, but they fell on hard times.’

Feng Yu glanced at Chen Mo with admiration.

"Mr. Chen, I am very sorry for giving you such a terrible dining experience. I offer you my deepest apologies."

"Please allow me a chance to show my sincerity. How about we go to my office to discuss this in detail?"

The owner adopted a very humble posture, his tone deeply sincere as he apologized to Chen Mo.

He was crystal clear on the situation. When you do something wrong, you have to take your punishment, and you take it standing tall.

This was no time for posturing. The right move was to figure out how to quietly resolve this and minimize the fallout as quickly as possible.

Even if it meant paying a higher price.

Was there any price greater than his restaurant—his life’s work—being shut down completely?

If word got out that his restaurant was selling fake wine...

then half a lifetime of hard work would be destroyed in an instant!

"Alright, but we’re bringing this bottle."

Chen Mo nodded but added a condition.

"Of course."

The owner nodded hastily.

Afterward, Chen Mo and Feng Yu followed the owner to his office.

The manager was also motioned to follow along, with a look from the owner that said he’d rather be stabbing him.

"I believe you two should give me an explanation first, shouldn’t you? Why is there fake wine here?"

Chen Mo glanced at the owner and manager and said coolly.

"What exactly is going on?"

At this, the owner shot the manager a nasty look, his face grim.

The manager averted his eyes and stammered, "Well..."

"Answer me!"

"Look in my eyes!"

Seeing him act like this, the owner glared into the manager’s eyes and growled in a low, intimidating voice.

"Brother-in-law, I was wrong, I wasn’t thinking straight..."

The manager shuddered, then with a tear-streaked face, he confessed to the owner and begged for forgiveness.

And he explained the whole story from beginning to end.

As it turned out, the manager was the owner’s brother-in-law and held considerable power in the restaurant.

He was in charge of the wine and beverage supply.

He had recently spent a lot of money chasing after a man and was a bit tight on cash.

He remembered a wine distributor who had approached him before, proposing to swap the restaurant’s fine wines for inferior ones.

So, he started selling the restaurant’s high-end wines to the distributor for less than market price.

Then, he would procure lower-quality beverages from that same distributor at a low cost and have the restaurant purchase them at the price of high-end wine.

This way, he could make money from both ends of the deal.

Although the quality of the beverages was inferior, it was hard for the average person to taste the difference.

Even if they noticed the taste wasn’t quite right, customers wouldn’t suspect a three-star Michelin restaurant of having fake wine.

They would just think they were mistaken.

And even if they encountered a wine connoisseur like Chen Mo, the manager would use the same little combo of tricks on them that he’d used on Chen Mo.

To avoid trouble, the customers would basically drop the matter.

Unfortunately for him, he ran into Chen Mo, a guy who was basically cheating at life.

Even more unfortunately, he ran into Feng Yu, who had a badge.

His little combo of tricks was useless.

After hearing the story, both Chen Mo and Feng Yu had to admit: the man had some serious nerve, and his heart was truly black.

If he were just swindling some random employer, that would be one thing.

But the owner of this restaurant was his own brother-in-law, and he didn’t hesitate to screw him over one bit.

"Brother-in-law, I really wasn’t thinking straight..."

"Get out! From now on, I’m not your damn brother-in-law!"

After hearing everything, the owner’s temper flared, and his composure shattered.

You can guard against a thousand thieves, but you can’t guard against one inside your own house.

After fuming for a moment, the owner remembered there was business to attend to. He forced himself to take a few deep breaths and calm down.

"Mr. Chen, Officer Feng, my apologies for this embarrassing display."

The owner gave a bitter smile. Although it was his brother-in-law’s fault, he also bore responsibility for poor management.

"Do you want to file a report? I’m always happy to work overtime."

Feng Yu sized up the manager, then looked at the owner, eager and ready to go as she asked her question.

This manager colluded with an outsider to embezzle restaurant assets. This is textbook white-collar crime.

Plus, he confessed to everything himself, so now they even had a statement.

If a report were filed, it would be an open-and-shut case.

If she made the arrest, it would be a nice little credit for her.
