Riley’s POV
The loud bang against the door snapped through the room so hard that my entire body jerked.
I scrambled off the floor immediately, heart racing, fingers shaking as I reached for my clothes scattered across the ground. Adrenaline crashed over the haze still clouding my mind from everything that had just happened.
Another heavy hit landed against the door.
Boom.
"Someone’s there," I said sharply.
Before I could move any farther, Gunnar caught my wrist.
"Wait."
His voice had changed instantly. The softness from moments ago was gone. His entire body had gone tense beside me, eyes sharp and alert again.
Caden was already pulling on his pants while Cane moved toward the door slowly, every muscle in his body tight.
Then a voice came from outside."Alpha!"
It was one of the guards.
Cane unlocked the door immediately.
The guard stumbled inside breathing hard, sweat running down the side of his face. His uniform was ripped near the shoulder and blood stained one sleeve.
"Alpha," he repeated roughly. "Ethan, Sebastian, and Daphne escaped."
Everything inside me stopped."What?"
The word flew out of my mouth before I could process it.
The guard swallowed hard. "The underground cells were attacked from the inside. Some of the guards are injured. One is dead."
"No," Caden muttered.
I grabbed my shirt from the floor and shoved it over my head quickly while my pulse hammered violently.
"How?" Cane asked coldly.
"We don’t know yet," the guard answered. "But they’re gone."
I was already pulling on my jeans with shaking hands.
Ethan escaped. Daphne escaped. Sebastian escaped.
After everything. After all of this.
Anger rushed through me so fast it almost made me dizzy.
"Move," I snapped.
Nobody tried stopping me this time.
The four of us rushed through the hallways together while guards scrambled around the compound in complete chaos. Alarms echoed through the building. I could hear shouting downstairs and heavy footsteps everywhere.
Caden walked slightly ahead of us, fury written all over his face.
"How the fuck did this happen?" he growled.
"No idea," Cane answered tightly. "But somebody helped them."
The underground corridor smelled like blood before we even reached the cells.
My stomach twisted immediately.
Two guards were slumped against the wall outside the prison entrance while another man pressed cloth against a deep wound on his neck. Blood covered the floor.
Cane shoved the heavy cell doors open.
The inside looked destroyed.
Broken chains. Bent bars. Blood splattered across the stone walls.
And in the far corner of the underground chamber, Wendy sat chained to the floor. Alone.
Her head was lowered slightly, blonde hair tangled and dirty, blood dripping slowly from her mouth onto the concrete beneath her. One side of her face was swollen badly.
But Ethan was gone.
Sebastian was gone. Daphne was gone.
Rage hit me so hard my vision blurred for a second.
I started moving forward immediately.
Cane grabbed my arm before I could enter fully.
"Wait."
I looked back at him.
His jaw was tight. "We don’t know what happened in there yet."
I stared at him for one second before forcing myself to calm down.
Then I smiled slightly. "Don’t worry," I said quietly. "I got this."
Cane studied my face carefully before finally letting go of my arm.
I walked into the cell slowly.
Wendy heard my footsteps and lifted her head immediately.
The hatred in her eyes almost made me laugh.
Even now. Even after being abandoned. She still looked at me like I was the enemy.
"Where did they go?" I asked calmly.
Wendy stared at me for a second then suddenly laughed. A rough ugly sound.
"And you think I’ll tell you?" she spat. Blood dripped down her chin as she spoke.
"Jokes on you, Riley."
I nodded slowly. "Wow."
I crouched in front of her carefully. "You really are stupid."
Her expression twisted immediately. "Fuck you."
I ignored that.
Then I stood up and started pacing slowly around the small cell.
"You know what’s funny?" I asked casually. "I thought maybe you might have helped them willingly seeing the fact they all escaped without you"
Wendy stayed silent.
"But now?" I glanced at her and laughed softly. "Now I actually think they sacrificed you."
Her eyes flickered slightly.
I stopped walking and looked directly at her.
"Don’t tell me you were the sacrificial lamb for their escape."
Wendy’s jaw tightened yet she still said nothing.
I laughed again.
"Oh my God," I muttered. "You seriously didn’t realize?"
"Shut up."
"No, seriously," I continued. "I knew you were desperate, Wendy, but I didn’t think you were this clueless and dumb."
"I said shut up!"
Her voice cracked this time.
I walked back toward her slowly before crouching again.
"Think about it," I said quietly. "Three of the most selfish people alive suddenly escape and somehow only you get left behind bleeding in a prison cell?"
Her breathing became uneven at my words.
"They used you to escape right?"
"They wouldn’t do that" she answered.
I tilted my head slightly. "Really?"
Wendy looked away from me immediately. That alone told me everything.
I smiled slowly. "Oh sweetheart," I murmured. "They absolutely would."
"They’re coming back for me," she whispered weakly.
The second she said it, I knew she didn’t fully believe it herself.
I almost pitied her. Almost.
I rested my elbows against my knees while studying her bruised face carefully.
"You really think Ethan’s coming back for you?"
Her eyes snapped toward me immediately. "He loves me, he’s obsessed with me so he would, I am his mate after all."
I laughed so hard this time that even Gunnar shifted slightly outside the cell.
Wendy’s face twisted with humiliation and anger.
"Oh honey," I said softly. "No he doesn’t."
Her face twisted.
"I’m serious. He really doesn’t, you don’t know Ethan." I continued "Ethan tells people whatever benefits him at the moment."
I leaned closer. "And deep down, you know it."
Wendy’s lips trembled. "You’re wrong."
"Am I?"
I glanced briefly toward the destroyed prison bars before looking back at her again.
"If Ethan cared about you, why are you still here?"
Silence.
"He escaped with Daphne."
Wendy flinched visibly.
"And Sebastian."
Another flinch.
"They left you bleeding on the floor to distract the guards isn’t it? That’s why you got so much wound."
Her eyes watered instantly and she said "How did you know that?"
I could practically see her trying to hold herself together.
But I wasn’t done.
"Tell me where they went," I said quietly. "And tell me who helped them."
She shook her head immediately. "I’m never telling you anything."
I sighed softly. "You still think they’re coming back for you"
No response.
"That’s honestly sad."
"Fuck you Riley."
I ignored that too.
"You know something funny?" I asked calmly. "Out of everyone involved in this mess, you were actually the one I planned on releasing eventually."
Wendy blinked at me and I nodded at her slowly.
"After that fight with you and Daphne, I realized something."
Her brows furrowed slightly.
"You’re a victim too."
That clearly caught her off guard.
I watched confusion flicker across her face immediately.
"You’re insane," she muttered.
"No," I answered honestly. "You just don’t understand the game Ethan’s been playing all these years."
"Are you jealous that he loves me?"
I almost rolled my eyes.
"Wendy," I said patiently. "Ethan doesn’t even know what love is."
I stood up again slowly.
"You think you were special because he slept with you and cheated on me? Because he protected you? Because he chose you over me?"
Her silence answered for her.
"Exactly. You know Daniel would have been a better man for you than Ethan but you didn’t just realize it earlier that Ethan was a psychopath"
I walked a few steps away before turning back toward her again.
"Should I tell you a secret about Ethan that nobody else knows while we were married?"
Wendy frowned. Even the men outside the cell had gone quiet now.
I lowered my voice slightly.
"In Crescent Hollow, there’s an old condition called Varethyn."
Wendy stared at me blankly.
I continued slowly.
"It happens mostly in powerful Alpha bloodlines. Rarely though. But when it does, it destroys everything around them."
"What are you talking about?"
"Men with Varethyn become obsessed with women they shouldn’t have."
Wendy’s expression tightened slightly.
"Forbidden women. Women with danger around them. Women with complicated lives. Women connected to power, rivals, loyalty... anything off-limits."
I walked closer again. "The obsession becomes addictive to them. It’s not just desire. It’s possession for them and conquest."
Wendy swallowed hard.
"They crave the chase more than the woman herself," I continued quietly. "And once they finally get what they wanted..."
I shrugged lightly."They lose interest." I smiled slightly.
"He loves me."
"No," I said again. "He loved winning."
Wendy looked shaken now. Her breathing became rougher.
"And the worst part?" I added softly. "Ethan always moves toward the next impossible thing."
Wendy stared at me.
I crouched in front of her one last time. "When he met me, I was his best friends mate."
Her face paled slightly.
"That made him obsessed."
I leaned closer. "The danger excited him, he wanted what he couldn’t have and do you who’s next?"
There was silence "Daphne"
Wendy looked terrified. "What does that have to do with Daphne?"
I held her stare for several seconds then finally smiled.
"Oh sweetheart," I said quietly. "You really still don’t see it?"
Wendy’s eyes widened slowly. I could practically watch realization creep into her face.
"She’s powerful," I continued softly. "She’s dangerous. She’s Sebastian’s daughter. She’s exactly the kind of woman Ethan’s sickness latches onto."
I tilted my head slightly. "Ethan’s already had enough of you."
Wendy’s face crumpled slowly.
"So now?" I whispered. "He’s moving on to the next woman he shouldn’t want and he’s going to murder Sebastian for it just like he did with your mother."
