Ares had been informed that Lucius was demanding an audience with him. He only assumed it was because of what he had done with Ayla.

Moving her back into her old room had been a unanimous decision, something he believed would be able to jog up her old memories but it has since proved abortive.

The priestess could not get her to remember anything and so far he had heard nothing from Cassian about anything asides the fact that she seemed conflicted.

Conflicted was good but it wasn’t what he had been aiming for and he could not keep Lucius here for much longer.

Sooner or later, after the festival, he would have to let him go and Ayla with him if she was still inclined to his lies about them.

He was tempted, very tempted to have Lucius thrown in the dungeons and have Ayla kept no matter her resistance on the matter but he was no brute.

He would not keep an unwilling woman.

The sounds of footsteps reached his ears before the door to his study opened and Lucius stormed in.

"You wanted to see me?" Ares asked.

"Yes."

There was something different about him today.

Ares had learned to read men and Lucius usually carried himself with an almost irritating degree of control. Even when angry, he concealed it beneath that calm voice and measured expression.

Today, the control was there but it was strained.

"I wanted to ask how soon the gates would be opened for us to leave," Lucius continued. "You mentioned it would not take very long."

Ares leaned back in his chair.

"And it won’t. My men are..."

"I know what you are trying to do, Ares."

Ares slowly inclined his head to the side, one eyebrow raised in fake confusion.

"Excuse me?"

"You are biding your time until Ayla gets her memories back."

"I do not know what you are talking about, Lord Lucius. If that would be all..."

Lucius crossed the room in three strides and slammed his palms against the desk.

The sound cracked through the study.

Ares’ eyes dropped briefly to Lucius’s hand then rose again.

"Do not fuck with me, Ares Rykeron." The fury in Lucius’s voice was unmistakable now. "You have no idea who I am."

"Don’t I?" Ares leaned back in his chair and clasped his hands in front of him. "I know you are a traitor, Lucius. The son of a traitor, in a family of traitors. I have read your history. I have read about the executions."

Something flashed in Lucius eyes, Ares saw it. He had struck something.

"I also know you stole scrolls from the archives," Ares went on, "about the crimes of your family."

"You know nothing about my family."

"I know you are the only living descendant of the Veyr line."

Lucius could feel the surprise climbing his throat, wanting to break across his face, and he forced it back down with the same will that had carried him through worse.

Then he laughed.

"Only living?" He shook his head slowly. "You are wrong. You met my twin. Alistair."

It was Ares’ turn to be surprised.

"You are not Alistair," Ares said.

Lucius straightened, smoothing his sleeves with deliberate care. "If you would excuse me." He gave a mock bow and turned for the door.

Ares rose slowly from his chair.

"What game are you playing?"

Lucius stopped and looked over his shoulder.

"What did you do to Ayla? What did you and your witch do to her? Answer me!" The roar tore from him.

For a moment, Lucius simply stared at Ares.

They had nothing, he thought.

He could see the desperation in the way Ares had his hands curled into fists. They were all clutching at air.

Lucius lips curved in a smile.

"Have a good day, Alpha Ares" he said and walked out.

...

Lucius returned to his chambers with anger simmering beneath his skin. He had barely shut the door before he realized he was not alone.

He had taken two steps inside before he saw the shape in the chair by the window, and his hand went for the knife at his belt.

"It is only me," Soren said.

Lucius let his hand fall. "Where the fuck have you been? I summoned you two days ago." he demanded.

"It was only yesterday." Soren interjected.

Lucius stared at him.

"I have been busy keeping my ears to the ground." Soren continued.

"And what have you found out?"

"You never told me about the execution your family faced at the hands of the last Alpha of this pack." he said.

Lucius stilled then chuckled to himself.

"It would seem everyone today has brushed up on their history," he said. "So what?"

Lucius crossed the room to the table and began pouring himself a much needed drink.

"You want me to tell you about how I cried and begged for my family’s life?"

"No, I...I do not remember" Soren said.

Lucius turned back to him, glass in hand.

"Excuse me?"

"I do not remember that event, Lucius." Soren’s voice was low.

"Don’t be ridiculous. You were there, I remember with your father and you watched them die."

Soren’s jaw tightened.

"I am telling you I do not remember."

Lucius moved closer.

"And neither does Kieran."

"Kieran?" Lucius’ eyes narrowed. "You have been speaking to him?"

"I only went to him to apologize."

"Apologize." Lucius let out a dry laugh. "Apologize for what? Pray tell"

"For my lies and the secret I kept from him, nothing more."

Lucius shook his head, tsking under his breath.

"You seem to be forgetting one tiny detail, Soren. I have your daughter and she could be dead before you bat an eyelid. You will think about that before you go conversing with Kieran.

"I have not forgotten about that." Soren answered.

"Good. Then do not give me a reason to remind you of what is at stake for you."

"Don’t you want to know how it is that you, who was younger than us remember the execution but we do not?"

"No" Lucius cut him off. "I do not give a fuck what you and Kieran remember."

It did not matter to him anymore. Ayla was what was important and the longer they stayed here, the more she slipped from his grasp.

"You lived your whole life in this court, yes?"

"Yes"

"Perfect, how the fuck do I get out?"
