Three Systems Made the Fake Heiress Unstoppable
Chapter 113: Smart Chloe YorkChapter 113: Chapter 113: Smart Chloe York
"Yes, I did!" Miles York said, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
He knew that ever since Brooke York had returned, Alice Cole had redirected the allowance she used to give Chloe to Brooke instead.
’Chloe has had no money since. How can that be? We’re still her parents on paper. We have an obligation to support her, so isn’t it perfectly normal to give her money?!’
’Besides, Chloe is so capable now and brings us so much honor. Shouldn’t that be all the more reason to give her money?’
Alice Cole was so furious she laughed. "So you *did* give Chloe money. I knew it. I was wondering where she got the money to have the nerve to move out. It came from you."
As if that wasn’t enough to vent her anger, Alice Cole grabbed a pillow and hurled it at Miles York. "So that’s how it is! You actually went behind my back and secretly gave Chloe money. What, you still think of her as your real daughter? You treat her like your own flesh and blood, but does she see you as her real father?"
The pillow hit Miles York square in the chest, and his own temper flared. He shot back at Alice Cole, "Alice, need I remind you that Chloe is still on the York family’s official register? She’s still my daughter, and we have an obligation to support her."
"We’re supporting her, but are her parents supporting our daughter? Aren’t we the ones supporting both of them right now? It’s one thing to support our own daughter, Brooke, that’s fine. But Chloe? On what grounds!"
Even though they were on different floors and the soundproofing was good, their rooms were directly above and below each other. Plus, Brooke York had deliberately left her window and door open, so she could just barely hear the sounds of arguing coming from Miles York and Alice Cole’s room downstairs.
To the sound of their argument, Brooke York started working on her practice questions in a very good mood.
The argument finally ended when Miles York slammed the door, left, and drove away from the York family home.
Once the arguing stopped, Brooke lost all motivation to study. She put away her books and test papers, closed the window and the door, and humming a tune, happily climbed into bed.
Her mood was so good because she had already figured out a way to crush Chloe York.
The next day, just as Chloe arrived in the classroom, Brooke came over to find her.
Brooke walked up to Chloe, the usual arrogant, disdainful look on her face replaced by an expression of sincerity and grievance.
"Chloe, I was wrong before. I was always trying to go against you. You were right—this whole switched-at-birth thing isn’t your fault or mine. We shouldn’t be at each other’s throats like this."
By now, the classroom was about half full. Although everyone pretended to be studying, the moment Brooke walked over to Chloe, they all perked up their ears and watched the two out of the corners of their eyes.
’Is Brooke actually going to make peace with Chloe?’ the other students wondered, stunned.
Ever since Brooke was confirmed as the true heiress of the York family and came back, she and Chloe had never gotten along. So why now, of all times, would Brooke suddenly approach Chloe and offer a truce?
"What are you trying to say?" Chloe wasn’t buying Brooke’s act and asked her directly.
"Can we just get along peacefully, like friends, from now on?"
"We’ll see." Chloe didn’t want to give Brooke a straight answer. ’Peaceful coexistence is impossible, but if I say that outright, who knows what kind of trick she’ll pull. The college entrance exams are right around the corner; I don’t have the time or energy for this nonsense.’
"Chloe, I know you don’t trust me because of what I’ve done in the past, but I’m being sincere this time. I really want to be friends with you. If you think about it, we’re bound by fate. Out of all the people in the world, we were the ones who got switched, right?"
’Chloe couldn’t believe Brooke would even try to spin their situation as some kind of destiny.’
"Fine. I get it. Now I need to study."
Chloe was clearly trying to get rid of her, telling her not to bother her anymore. Brooke got the hint and nodded. "Okay, Chloe. You focus on your studies, then. I’ll go back to my seat."
Brooke turned and went back to her seat, where Clara Bell immediately leaned over. "Brooke, do you have any idea what you just said?"
When she first heard Brooke say that, she thought she must have misheard. She had to dig a finger in her ear a few times before she could believe it.
"Of course I do," Brooke replied.
"You do? Then what’s gotten into you? Did something happen? How could you just decide to forgive Chloe and make peace with her?" Clara was completely incredulous. She knew exactly how much Brooke despised Chloe.
Whenever Clara had encouraged her to go after Chloe, Brooke’s schemes had been as vicious as they come.
’And now, after all this time, she’s saying they should just get along? Does she not hate Chloe anymore?’
"That’s right. I’m going to get along with Chloe. Is there a problem with that?" Brooke retorted, but she didn’t explain her reasoning.
"No, no problem at all." Clara didn’t know what else to say. If the two people who should have been the biggest enemies were going to make peace, what could she possibly add? Tell them she disagreed? There was no need for that.
’I just hope I don’t have to deal with getting tormented by *two* young mistresses from now on!’
"Clara, from now on, you need to be like me and get along with Chloe. There’s no need to always be at each other’s throats, understand?"
"I know, I know!" Clara nodded. ’I must still be dreaming,’ she thought. ’That’s the only way I could be hearing something so unbelievable.’
Seeing Clara agree, Brooke looked very pleased and happily started organizing her books.
"What’s with Brooke? She’s suddenly acting like a completely different person. She’s not trying to get you to tutor her, is she? The college entrance exams are just a few days away. How could she possibly catch up now?"
"Who knows what she’s up to." Chloe paid Brooke no mind. The college entrance exams were almost here; everything hinged on them. With the help of her system and her own hard work, she was determined to make up for her results from her past life.
Even though she had been the top scorer in the college entrance exam in her past life, her language arts exam had been two points shy of a perfect score. This time, she wouldn’t even let the essay points slip by; she was aiming for a perfect composition.
"Something’s not right. She’s not that sincere," Stella Winters suddenly interjected.
"Come on, girl, are you still thinking about that?" Chloe said, exasperated. It really wasn’t worth wasting her time on.
"Chloe, I’m telling you, she’s definitely up to something," Stella said, offering her theory with a tone of absolute certainty.
"Of course she is. She’s suddenly talking about a truce right before the exams. There are two possibilities. One, she wants to stop me from taking the exams. As for how she’d do that, maybe by giving me food poisoning or just causing some kind of trouble for me. Two, she wants to frame me. For what? Maybe plant something on me to get my exam eligibility revoked. But no matter what trick she has up her sleeve, I’m not afraid."
