Chapter 137: Chapter 137: Send Brooke York Abroad?

The next day, Chloe York got up, took her luggage, and headed to Southbend.

So when Miles York came looking for her, he discovered she was already gone.

He could only return home. Having been away for a few days, Miles York found the entire house eerily quiet.

"Sir, you’re back!" The butler stepped forward and took Miles York’s coat.

"Where is everyone? Why is it so quiet?" Miles York looked around. Aside from the butler, he couldn’t see anyone else. The maids who were usually bustling about, wiping and cleaning, were nowhere to be seen. Even Alice Cole, who loved to sit on the sofa watching TV, was absent.

"Sir, some of the staff have resigned, and the rest are in their quarters right now," the butler reported truthfully.

"Why would people suddenly quit? And isn’t it working hours right now? Why has everyone run off to their quarters? I can’t see anyone in this house but you."

Miles York didn’t understand. ’Have the rules of the house changed just because I was gone for a few days?’

"Sir, this was all arranged by the Madam. She said there were too many servants, and the noise would disturb the Young Miss’s studies. She also said that since it’s not time to cook yet and the morning cleaning is finished, the servants should stay in their rooms and not come out."

"Studies? What studies? Isn’t the college entrance exam over? She scored a zero. Does someone who gets a zero still need to study?"

Miles York’s words were filled with scorn. He had completely lost all faith in Brooke York now.

’And Alice Cole keeps telling me how wonderful Brooke York is. For someone with such supposedly good grades to score a zero... she’s even more of a disappointment than Chloe York was back in the day.’

The butler heard the scorn in Miles York’s voice for Brooke York and cautiously reminded him, "Sir, the Madam said she wants the Young Miss to repeat the year."

"What? Repeat the year? Hasn’t she embarrassed us enough already? What’s this nonsense about repeating the year?" Hearing that Alice Cole wanted Brooke York to repeat the year, Miles York was instantly furious.

The whole affair was already a huge embarrassment for him. They should just let it die down, and Brooke York should lay low. Given enough time, people would forget. But if she repeated the year, what if she got a zero again? For the entire year, everyone would know his daughter was repeating a grade. How utterly humiliating.

The butler said no more. This was his employers’ business. Besides, both the Madam and the Young Miss had agreed to her repeating the year. He was just the butler; it wasn’t his place to comment on their internal family conflicts.

Seething with anger, Miles York turned and stormed upstairs to his and Alice Cole’s room.

At that moment, Alice Cole was in the room doing her skincare routine. Even though Miles York wasn’t home, she never let herself go. After all, she wasn’t doing it for him—she was doing it to please herself.

Suddenly, with a loud BANG, the door flew open.

Alice Cole was about to fly into a rage, but when she stood up and turned to see it was Miles York, her anger dissipated. "What are you doing? You’re home, fine, but did you have to slam the door open? Do you want everyone to know you’re back?"

"Was it your idea for Brooke York to repeat the year?"

Alice Cole turned back around, sat down again, and continued applying her lotion in the mirror. "Yes, it was. What about it? She’s our daughter. If she doesn’t repeat the year, are you just going to let her enter the workforce?"

"Do you have any idea what a disgrace she is right now? Everyone online is laughing at her for getting a zero, and now you want her to repeat the year?"

Miles York’s tone was far from pleasant; he was practically roaring.

His tone immediately ignited Alice Cole’s anger as well.

She shot to her feet, glaring furiously at Miles York.

"Miles York, that is your own daughter! Back when Chloe York was in the same boat, you just shoved her into a high school without a second thought. So what, now that Brooke is willing to repeat the year, you’re against it? Now you find her embarrassing? How come you weren’t so worried about being embarrassed then?"

"Is this situation really the same as Chloe York’s? Back then, she was just taking the high school entrance exam. This is the college entrance exam! It’s something everyone is paying attention to. The news is all over the internet. It’s completely different from Chloe York’s situation."

’I don’t know what goes through Alice Cole’s head all day,’ Miles York thought.

"I don’t care if their situations are the same or not. All I know is that Brooke is my daughter, she wants to repeat the year, and I support her. In fact, it was my idea from the start! I won’t let her be ruined like this. Her education can’t just end with a high school diploma."

"I never said I wanted her ruined, and I never said her education should stop at high school! Is repeating the year the only option? Can’t we send her to study abroad? Can’t we just have her disappear from the public eye for a while?"

This barrage of questions from Miles York left Alice Cole completely stunned.

"You... what did you say? Send Brooke to study abroad?"

Miles York sighed and walked over to sit on the edge of the bed. "Brooke is my daughter, too. My own flesh and blood. How could I possibly let her education stop at high school, and how could I let her go through the humiliation of repeating a year? I didn’t even make Chloe York repeat; I just pushed her into high school. Compared to how I treated Chloe York, do you really think I’d care less about Brooke, my own biological daughter?"

Hearing this, Alice Cole felt a pang of guilt. She realized she had been misunderstanding and mistrusting Miles York all this time.

’I always thought he was someone who put profit above all else, that he didn’t really care about his daughter.’

Alice Cole walked over to stand before Miles York. "You could have said so earlier," she said, her voice softening. "I misunderstood. I thought you were giving up on Brooke. You have no idea how much you’ve been favoring Chloe York lately, and how much you’ve neglected Brooke. And you don’t know how hard she has worked for your approval, how worried she is every day about disappointing you."

Alice Cole laid out all of Brooke York’s worries from this recent period for Miles York to hear.

"What choice do I have? Right now, Chloe York is brilliant, her results are excellent, and she has everyone’s attention. She can bring enormous profits to the company, so of course I have to seize that opportunity and pay attention to her. But no matter what, Brooke is my biological daughter. She’s the one who will inherit the company. How could I possibly not know which of them is ultimately more important?"

"Alright, alright, you’re right. I misunderstood you. This was all my mistake, I’m sorry." Alice Cole immediately softened and apologized to Miles York.

"Alright. Find some time to talk to Brooke. Tell her she doesn’t need to study so hard to repeat the year. Look into some good schools abroad and send her overseas to get a prestigious diploma."

Hearing this, Alice Cole hesitated again. "Dear, I don’t know if Brooke will agree. And she only just came back to us a year ago. I really can’t bear to send her abroad again so soon. And what if she reads too much into it? I feel like she’s a very sensitive child." Alice Cole voiced her concerns.

Through her time with Brooke lately, she had clearly sensed that the girl was very perceptive and sensitive.
