Rosalie:
I stared at Kaiser for several long seconds, trying to process what he had just said.
Charlotte had found me first.
Not Alastor. Not Darien. Not even Kaiser himself. But Charlotte. The same woman who had made my life miserable long before I walked away from Blackthorn Pack had somehow managed to track me down before anyone else.
I let out a slow breath. "Tell me everything."
Kaiser nodded. For a brief moment, he looked as though he was deciding where to begin. "It started a few weeks ago," he finally said. "When Alastor came back after a trip to Briston."
My fingers tightened slightly around the warm mug sitting in front of me.
"He told Darien and me that he’d seen you."
I remained silent.
"He..." Kaiser hesitated, his jaw tightening almost imperceptibly. "...also told us you weren’t alone." His gaze briefly drifted toward the table before returning to me. "There was another Alpha with you."
For just a heartbeat, I thought the conversation would turn into accusations. Who was he? Why were you with him? What kind of relationship do you have? Or why were you in Briston?
Those were exactly the kinds of questions I had expected from any of the three Alphas.
Instead, Kaiser simply continued, "And we almost immediately found out who he was. Eiden Thorn."
I didn’t react, at least not outwardly. I already expected all this to happen. There was no way Alastor wasn’t going to investigate Eiden after getting intimidated by him that day, and there was absolutely nothing stopping him from finding out exactly who Eiden was.
Kaiser carefully watched my face as though searching for some kind of response. Shock. Fear. Guilt. Or perhaps Anxiety. But I simply looked back at him calmly. Eventually, he seemed to realize I wasn’t going to say anything.
He nodded once and continued, "The moment Alastor learned it was Eiden Thorn, he ordered Luxe to investigate your exact whereabouts and your connection with Eiden Thorn."
Once again I didn’t ask any questions, nor did I show any reaction. So far he had said nothing that went against what I already saw coming.
"There have been rumors for quite some time now," Kaiser explained. "People believe Eiden Thorn has some kind of relationship with the Rogue Alpha Nightfang."
Zaiden.
I resisted the urge to smile.
"They have apparently been seen working together more than once over the past few years."
Of course they had.
"Luxe worked for days," Kaiser continued. "An he eventually discovered that you didn’t actually live in Briston. He traced your movements as far as he could and reached a dead end. There was no sign of your presence in entire Briston. Even the CCTV footages of the club, the street, and the bakery Alastor mentioned might have captured you turned out completely empty... almost as if someone had removed your very presence from that city."
I had no idea that Zaiden and Eiden had gone so far to remove my traces from Briston. But apparently, doing all that still couldn’t stop trouble from knocking at my doors.
"There was no sign or yours in Briston. And it was impossible to investigate your whereabouts within the Nightfang Pack."
That part was understandable. For years Nightfang Pack’s territory had stayed impenetrable. Anyone trying to investigate the Rogue Alpha’s territory was practically asking for trouble.
"So..." Kaiser continued, "we couldn’t confirm whether you were actually connected to Nightfang or whether Briston had simply been a coincidence."
The explanation only left me more confused. I tilted my head slightly and looked directly at him. "Then how did you end up finding me?"
The question had barely left my mouth before I remembered his earlier words. No. It wasn’t him who found me, but Charlotte.
Kaiser sighed quietly. "I told you. It wasn’t me. It was Charlotte." He rested both forearms on the table before speaking again. "A few nights ago, I noticed something strange." His expression gradually hardened. "Alastor and Darien were both away handling pack business. And Charlotte probably believed I wasn’t home either. So she left the packhouse in the middle of the night."
That immediately caught my attention.
He continued, "I followed her. I stayed far enough away that she wouldn’t notice." His eyes narrowed slightly as though replaying the memory. "Eventually she stopped near the outskirts of pack territory, and there I watched her meet a group of local thugs."
The warmth from my tea suddenly disappeared. "What?"
"They weren’t rogues, nor were they wolves. Just ordinary criminals willing to do anything for enough money." His voice remained calm. "I watched Charlotte hand them a thick envelope."
Money.
Of course. Money had always been Charlotte’s favorite weapon.
"What happened after that?" I asked.
"I didn’t confront her. I wanted to know what she was planning. So I started following the men instead." His fingers lightly tapped against the wooden table. "They very next morning, they met with another group. They passed instructions as well as half of the money to hire the three women who just caused trouble at your store earlier today."
Everything suddenly clicked into place.
Kaiser continued, "I followed them... and they led me here." He exhaled slowly. "I still didn’t know who their target was. I only knew Charlotte was planning something." His voice became noticeably quieter. "I never expected...that she was targeting you again."
I almost laughed, but it was a bitter one.
Who else would Charlotte target? She had spent so much efforts making sure I never truly belonged anywhere. And now that I had finally built something for myself, she had immediately tried to destroy that too.
I looked down at my untouched dinner. Somehow, none of this shocked me anymore. Instead of voicing those thoughts, I lifted my head again.
"Kaiser."
He waited.
"What are you planning to do now?"
His brows furrowed slightly.
"You saw everything yourself." I held his gaze. "You saw Charlotte pay people. You saw what happened in the bookstore. You are the witness of her attempt of hurting me once again." I kept my voice calm. "So... what now?"
The question lingered heavily between us.
For several long seconds, Kaiser didn’t answer. His shoulders slowly sank. The exhaustion in his eyes suddenly looked years older. And when he finally spoke, his voice was filled with quiet frustration.
"I can’t punish her, Rose."
