Rosalie:

For a moment, Kaiser simply looked at me. His lips parted as though he wanted to say something else. But I didn’t let him.

"So that’s it?" I asked, unable to keep the disappointment out of my voice. "You won’t punish her." The bitterness I’d managed to suppress all evening finally rose to the surface. "You may not want to hurt your precious mate, Kaiser, but I’m done."

His expression stiffened. He almost looked momentarily surprised as if he didn’t expect such a strong reaction from me. And I couldn’t even blame him for that.

"I’m done staying silent." Every word felt lighter the moment I spoke it aloud. "I’m done pretending everything will somehow get better if I just keep enduring it." I slowly pushed my chair back and stood. "I’m not the Rosalie who quietly accepted everything anymore."

The memories from the bookstore flashed through my mind. The accusing fingers. The insults. The phones recording me. The customers trying to defend me.

If Kaiser hadn’t arrived...

I didn’t even want to imagine how far those women would have gone.

"I have no intention of letting Charlotte keep harming me and destroying the life I have finally managed to build."

Without waiting for a response, I picked up my bag and turned toward the exit.

"Rose."

I ignored him. But before I could take another step, warm fingers wrapped gently around my wrist. Instinctively, I jerked my arm free. The movement was so quick that even Kaiser seemed startled.

"Don’t touch me." The words came out sharper than I intended.

He immediately took a small step back, lifting both hands slightly as if to show he wasn’t trying to restrain me. "I’m sorry," he said quietly. "I shouldn’t have done that."

I didn’t answer. Instead, I tried to walk away. But he moved again, though not aggressively. Just simply enough to block the narrow path between the table and the wall.

I frowned.

"Kaiser."

"I’m not trying to stop you forever." His voice remained calm despite the obvious urgency in it. "I’m asking for five more minutes."

"I have already heard enough."

"No." He slowly shook his head. "You have only heard half of what I came here to say."

I folded my arms.

"I’m not protecting Charlotte."

That almost made me laugh. The sound never escaped. Instead, I stared at him in disbelief.

"I’m serious." He met my eyes without flinching. "You agreed to sit down and talk to me."

"I did."

"Then the least you can do..." His voice softened. "...is let me finish."

I wanted to tell him I owed him nothing. Because I didn’t.nNot after everything that had happened. That I had every right to walk away. And yet... as I looked into his eyes, I didn’t see entitlement or arrogance. I saw someone asking. Not demanding, but pleading. It reminded me painfully of the Kaiser I had once loved.

With a quiet sigh, I pulled my chair back out and sat down again.

"You have five minutes."

Relief flickered across his face. "I won’t waste them." He sat back down as well, leaning forward slightly.

"The reason I can’t act against Charlotte right now has nothing to do with caring about her."

I remained silent.

"She is carrying Darien’s child." His expression grew solemn. "My brother’s child and the future heir of Blackthorn Pack." His hands slowly tightened together on the table. "No matter how much I despise Charlotte, I can’t knowingly do something that might put that unborn child in danger."

I listened quietly. Not because I agreed with everything. But becausemI understood. The child hadn’t done anything wrong. It hadn’t chosen its mother. It hadn’t chosen the circumstances surrounding its birth.

If someone had asked me whether Charlotte deserved to be punished, my answer would have been immediate. But if someone had asked whether the innocent baby growing inside her deserved to suffer alongside her, my answer would have been just as immediate.

No.

Never.

Kaiser seemed to notice the change in my expression. "So you understand."

"I understand protecting the child," I answered honestly.

His shoulders relaxed just slightly. "But don’t misunderstand me, Rose." His voice became firmer. "I have absolutely no intention of letting Charlotte walk away from everything she’s done."

That caught my attention.

"It stopped being only about you a long time ago. I have watched her manipulate my brothers. I have watched her abuse her position. And I’m probably the only one notiicng her attempts at dividing us brothers and our packs." His jaw clenched. "Every day I become more convinced that she is a poison."

The words were spoken without hesitation.

"Not only for you. But for Alastor. For Darien. For both of our packs." He inhaled slowly before continuing. "So while everyone believed I’d accepted things and am just throwing a tantrum, I have been investigating her."

I frowned.

"Investigating?"

He nodded once. "I have been collecting evidence."

Evidence?

Before I could ask another question, Kaiser reached beside his chair and picked up a thick brown folder. Only then did I realize it had been resting against the table leg the entire time.

He placed it carefully on the table between us, nudging it toward me. "I knew Charlotte wasn’t who she pretended to be," he said quietly. "But... I never imagined I’d find what was inside."

My gaze dropped to the folder. Its edges were worn from being opened and closed countless times. Slowly, almost hesitantly, I reached forward and opened the folder.
