Rosalie:
One wolf clamped his jaws onto my shoulder, forcing a pained growl from my throat. Before he could tighten his grip, I threw my weight sideways, slamming him into a tree hard enough to loosen his hold.
The second wolf lunged immediately afterward, his claws raking across my flank. Pain burned through my body while blood warmed my fur. I answered with a savage swipe that sent him rolling several feet through the snow.
The third charged directly at my throat.
Let me end him.
No!
I screamed at my wolf through waterever little control I still had over her. But she didn’t seem in the mood of listening. She snapped back at me immediately.
I kill him or he kill us.
She didn’t wait for my response. Not like I even had one to begin with.
I ducked beneath him, turned with impossible speed, and slammed into his side before he landed. He crashed against the frozen ground with a sharp cry.
Human combat training had prepared me to survive. Wolf combat was something entirely different. There was no thinking. No carefully remembered techniques. Only instinct, movement, and the fierce determination to protect. And beneath all of it, my wolf’s overwhelming desire.
Kill them.
Not because she enjoyed violence. But because they had come to kill us... and they wouldn’t be stopping until they had me dead.
The wolves regrouped once more. One feinted left, another came from behind, and the third didn’t hesitate as he charged straight toward me with unmistakable murderous intent, jaws aimed directly for my throat.
Something inside my wolf snapped. With a roar that shook the silent forest, she surged forward instead of backward.
Our bodies collided.
His jaws missed. But mine didn’t. I felt my teeth close firmly around the side of his neck mercilessly.
He thrashed violently, tried to pull free. But my wolf refused to release him. He made one final desperate struggle, then his body went limp beneath mine.
The forest fell eerily quiet. For the briefest moment, the remaining two wolves simply stared.
So did I.
I had... killed him.
Before shock could fully settle in, two thunderous growls erupted from deeper within the forest.
The remaining attackers barely had time to turn as two enormous wolves burst through the trees like living storms. One possessed gleaming silver fur that shimmered beneath the moonlight, while the other’s coat was as black as the winter night itself.
Neither hesitated as they crashed into the remaining attackers with overwhelming force, driving them away from me in an instant.
The two unfamiliar... yet very familiar... wolves stood between me and the surviving assassins, their furious growls rolling through the forest as the battle exploded into chaos once again.
The forest erupted into chaos.
The moment the silver wolf crashed into one of the remaining attackers while the black wolf tore the other away from me, the balance of the battle shifted so completely that the assassins never stood another chance. Their earlier confidence vanished beneath pure survival instinct.
I watched as the silver wolf drove his opponent into the trunk of an enormous pine hard enough for the tree itself to shudder, while the black wolf moved with terrifying precision, each attack calculated, each bite landing exactly where it would cripple instead of merely injure. Neither of them wasted a single movement. They weren’t fighting out of desperation the way I had been. They were seasoned Alphas, and the difference showed.
One attacker tried to retreat, but the silver wolf was faster. He intercepted him before he had taken three steps, his massive body slamming sideways into the fleeing wolf and sending both of them rolling through the snow. A bone-crunching yelp echoed through the forest.
The second wolf attempted to circle around the black one, but he never made it. The black wolf spun with frightening speed, his jaws clamping around the attacker’s foreleg before violently throwing him several feet away. The injured wolf hit the frozen ground awkwardly, struggled to stand, then collapsed again with another agonised cry.
Within less than a minute, both attackers had been reduced from hunters into prey - bruised, bleeding, and broken. Neither of them looked capable of continuing the fight.
My heart should have settled. I should have felt relieved. Instead, terror flooded through me.
I might be seeing the silver and the black wolves, but I still knew them. Even before the mate bond flared so powerfully inside my chest that it almost hurt, I’d already recognised them.
The silver fur and the overwhelming aura was none other than Eiden. And the black coat, darker than the surrounding night itself was Zaiden.
My mates.
Normally, seeing either of them would have filled me with comfort, safety, and relief. But tonight, my fear only multiplied. My breathing became ragged.
No...
No...
No...
They couldn’t see me. Not like this. Not after...
My eyes drifted toward the motionless wolf lying several metres away. The one I’d killed. His blood stained the white snow an ugly crimson. My stomach lurched violently.
I... I had done that. I had ended someone’s life.
The man had come intending to murder me. I knew that. If I hadn’t fought back, I would be the one lying dead beneath the moon. I understood that as well. Deep down, I didn’t regret defending myself. But understanding it and accepting that I had actually killed someone... were two completely different things.
My entire body began trembling.
The silver wolf suddenly turned toward me and it’s blue eyes met mine. The mate bond surged so intensely that my chest tightened, but again it lacked the comfort it usually carried.
He took one careful step, a gentle one. Almost as if he understood how unstable I was at the moment. It was the same way he and Zaiden always approached me whenever they thought I was in an unstable state.
Something inside me shattered.
Run.
Before either wolf could move again, I spun around and bolted deeper into the forest.
