Chapter Two Hundred and Ten

Not the way her heart had stuttered, not the way something warm and bright had bloomed so suddenly inside her chest that it almost scared her. Instead, Asli only tilted her head slightly, her expression settling into something calm; almost amused, as if his words hadn’t just shifted something inside of her.

"Hmm," she hummed, light and unbothered, like it was nothing more than a passing statement. Her fingers brushed over a loose strand of hair, tucking it behind her ear.

There was a small smile on her lips; controlled, careful. Too careful.

She turned away before he could study her too closely, before he could catch the flicker in her eyes that she refused to let grow into something obvious. "I should freshen up," she added casually, already moving. "It’s almost evening."

The door closed softly behind her. And the moment it did, everything broke. Her back hit the door, her hands flying to her mouth as her eyes widened, her composure shattering completely. A silent gasp escaped her, her shoulders trembling as the reality of it rushed in all at once.

’He loves me.’ The thought echoed, loud and dizzying.

He loved her.

A breathless laugh nearly slipped out, but she caught it just in time, pressing her lips together as if that would somehow contain the overwhelming rush bubbling inside her. Her feet moved before she even realized it, pacing the small space, hands running through her hair, then dropping, then lifting again as if she didn’t know what to do with them.

"He loves me," she whispered, barely a sound, testing the words like they might disappear if she said them too loudly.

Her heart hammered harder.

"He loves me." She repeated. Softer this time, but fuller, warmer.

A grin spread across her face, uncontrollable now, stretching until her cheeks hurt. She spun once on her heel, a quiet, giddy movement, the kind she would deny with her life if anyone ever saw.

Her hand pressed against her chest, as she tried to steady it, but it only made her more aware of how fast it was beating.

"Calm down," she mouthed to herself, though she did nothing of the sort.

For a second, her gaze flicked toward the door, panic sparking. What if he walked in? What if he saw her like this; completely undone over a few words?

She straightened immediately, forcing a breath in, then out, wiping at her face as if that would erase the evidence of her excitement.

Another whisper slipped out before she could stop it.

"He loves me."

Her smile faltered just a little, curiosity slipping in through the excitement.

"Since when...?" she whispered to herself, brows pulling together.

And then, she remembered.

It had been since day one. Her breath caught.

He was certain and had said it so easily. As if there had never been a moment of doubt. As if it had always been there, waiting... even when she hadn’t seen it. Even when she hadn’t dreamt of him telling her those words. She had never hoped for it because there was no way a man like Ahmet would fall in love.

Let alone with her. He was in love with her. Of all the women in the world...

Her hand pressed lightly against her chest again, feeling the steady, overwhelming rhythm beneath her palm.

"I never thought..." she murmured, shaking her head faintly. "I never thought hearing that would make me this happy."

It felt strange admitting it to even herself.

Asli leaned back against the door again, her gaze drifting, her thoughts tangling in ways she wasn’t used to. She had always been in control, always one step ahead of her emotions.

But this?

This was different. Her hand slid down slowly, coming to rest over her stomach. She stilled.

A small frown touched her lips.

"Is it..." she hesitated, the question forming carefully, almost cautiously. "Is it because of the baby? Was she excited because she was pregnant? Was this her hormones?"

Silence answered her. Her fingers curled slightly, her grip tightening just a little as she searched herself, digging past the surface, past the easy explanation.

’Naaaaa. It can’t be the baby. This is just me!’ she decided. ’I am actually happy.’ Somehow, that realization felt even more overwhelming than everything else.

She lingered under the water longer than she needed to.

It had long gone from warm to just barely tolerable, but she didn’t move. Her fingers trailed absently along her arm, her mind replaying his voice over and over again.

Since day one. The smile tugging at her lips was still there. It refused to leave.

She ducked her head under the stream, as if the water could cool whatever had taken hold of her, but when she came back up, it was still there.

"Stop," she muttered under her breath, though there was no real effort behind it.

By the time she stepped out, she had already begun putting herself back together. The girl who had been pacing and whispering to herself stayed behind with the steam and tiled walls.

Asli stepped out composed and unreadable.

By the time she opened the bedroom door, there was nothing left of that earlier excitement, at least, nothing anyone else could see.

The faint sound of cutlery reached her first, followed by the low hum of movement just beyond the doorway. The scent of food lingered in the air, warm and grounding, pulling her fully out of her thoughts.

She stepped out and there he was standing.

Waiting.

The first thing she noticed was the way he stood, effortlessly still, like he didn’t need to try to command a space. Then her gaze lifted, and...

For a second, she forgot to keep walking.

Ahmet looked like he had stepped out of something unreal. The kind of man people exaggerated about and still didn’t get right. Broad shoulders filling out his shirt like it had been made for him alone, dark hair slightly tousled in a way that looked accidental but wasn’t. His sharp features were carved with an almost unfair precision.

There was something dangerously calm about him too, something controlled, and deliberate. Like a storm that chose when to break.

And that smile. It was usually small. Knowing. Just enough to make it worse. This man was hers. Completely hers.

Her chest tightened, just slightly. She looked away first.

"Food is ready," he said, already pulling a chair out for her.

The gesture was simple, but there was something in the way he did it, like it wasn’t a question of whether she’d sit or not.

"I’m not really hungry," she started, pausing just behind the chair.

He didn’t even look surprised.

"No." His voice cut in, it was calm but firm. "You need to eat."

She glanced at him, brows lifting slightly and ready to protest.

"You lost a lot of blood," he continued, meeting her eyes now. "You need to take your medicine. You need to be healthy. I wasn’t strict yesterday because you were asleep when I got back."

That was it. No room to argue. No space to push. Just a quiet, immovable wall. Her lips pressed together.

She sat.

The silence stretched just enough for her annoyance to settle in. Though childish, and completely unnecessary. She picked at the edge of the table lightly, her appetite nowhere to be found.

The medicines made her dizzy. She hated that part.

"Eat," he added, softer this time but not any less firm.

Her shoulders dropped a little.

"Fine," she muttered. Then, under her breath, "Yes, Daddy." The words slipped out before she could catch them.

Then she froze.

Slowly, very slowly, her eyes lifted.

He was smiling. Not just smiling. That kind of smile that said he had heard every single syllable and was not going to let it go.

Heat crept up her neck.

"Call me that again," he said. There was no hesitation in it. No embarrassment.

Just... interest.

Her eyes widened. "No. That’s weird."

"But you said it the first time."

"I didn’t mean to," she shot back quickly, sitting straighter. "It just slipped."

His gaze didn’t leave her. If anything, it deepened.

She rolled her eyes, trying to shake off the sudden weird feeling curling in her chest. "Shouldn’t you be concerned?" she added, a small laugh slipping out. "I mean, you hate the man. And here I am, calling you that."

The shift was immediate. Subtle but there.

"You see me as your father?" he asked.

She blinked. "Huh?" Then, just as quickly as the meaning smiled, "Hell no!"

The response came out sharp, almost offended, and she shook her head, waving it off. "I was bored, okay? I had nothing to do, so I downloaded some social apps." A grin tugged at her lips as she leaned forward slightly. "Humans are interesting."

His brow arched. "And you are what? A werewolf?"

She pointed at him immediately. "Exactly! Do you know some people actually believe that?" Her eyes lit up, the earlier awkwardness already forgotten. "There are thousands of books and an entire community."

He leaned back slightly, watching her now.

Listening.

"You’d think people would be more concerned about real things," she continued, gesturing lightly as she spoke. "But no they’re out here arguing about vampires versus werewolves like it’s politics."

A quiet huff of laughter left her.

"They even have rankings. Like, who’s stronger, who’s faster..."

She kept going.

And he let her.

He didn’t interrupt. Didn’t correct. Didn’t even tease this time.

He just... watched.

There was something almost soft in his gaze, something quieter than before. Like he wasn’t just hearing her. But taking her in.

The way her hands moved when she got excited.

The way her voice lifted without her noticing. The way she forgot everything else when she talked.

At some point, she had started eating. At some point, so had he. Neither of them noticed when the plates emptied. Time slipped and the conversation stretched.

And for a while, nothing else existed.

A sharp ping cut through the moment. Asli paused mid-sentence, her hand already reaching for her phone. The screen lit up and she read the name that flashed on her screen.

It was her father. Her smile faded before she even opened the message.

’Be home tomorrow. Just assign Cole to continue.’

That was all it said but it was enough. And everything from before: the laughter, the lightness, the warmth, they all vanished as if it had never been there.

Her grip tightened slightly around the phone.

Reality settled back in, heavy and uninvited.
