Chapter Two Hundred and Fourteen

Her head tilted, curiosity slipping in before she could hide it. "Really? What? How?" She stopped herself, then let out a small breath. "Where is he?"

Cole didn’t answer right away.

His gaze dropped, then shifted to the side, like he suddenly found something far more interesting on the wall. His jaw tightened, just slightly. Regret flickered across his face quickly, but not quickly enough.

Asli caught it.

Her brow lifted. Did he not want to tell her? She just realized she knew nothing personal about him.

"Come on," she said, a faint edge of amusement in her voice. "I’m not that hard to talk to. Or am I?" she added, tilting her head. "Why does everyone act like they’re walking on glass around me?"

A quiet chuckle left him, though it didn’t quite reach his eyes.

"You can’t blame them," he said, rubbing the back of his neck. "You are..."

He paused, searching for the right word or so it seemed.

"Too professional."

Her lips curved slightly. "I’ll take that." A small huff of laughter followed. "I know that took effort."

She shifted on the bed, studying him. "Is your twin in the Mafia too?"

Cole let out a breath through his nose, pacing once before answering. "I’m afraid... yes." He went again and then continued. "No... I mean, disappointedly, yes."

That got her attention yet she didn’t interrupt. She just watched him impatiently.

"I know you won’t forgive me for this," he said after a moment, his voice quieter now. "I’m just hoping my punishment isn’t death." A faint, humorless smile touched his lips. "If I’m still alive, maybe I can earn your trust again."

Her expression didn’t change. Now she wanted to hear it all. Why did he think having a twin brother would have him killed by her?

"Tell me." It wasn’t a request.

He nodded once, like he expected that.

"Our parents were killed," he began, his pacing slowing. "I came here thinking I was protecting him." A pause. "But he followed me anyway."

His gaze dropped again.

"He thinks I betrayed him. Or hated him." His jaw clenched. "Something I’d never do. Not to him."

Silence stretched.

"I’m not asking you to bring him along," he added quickly. "I’m just saying... I have a twin brother."

Asli said nothing for a moment. Her eyes stayed on him, steady, searching.

’That’s it’

For someone like Cole, that wasn’t just a confession.

That was a door, though half open.

"He should come with us," she said finally. "I’ll need all the men I can get."

He shook his head immediately. "Thank you... But no. He’s dangerous."

A scoff slipped out of her before she could stop it. "I am dangerous." Her gaze sharpened. "Leaving doesn’t mean I’m dropping my skills at the door."

"I know," he said quietly. "But... I don’t want anyone harming the child."

Asli smiled at him. She didn’t say anything about that but asked. "Do you know who killed your parents?"

"I do..." He hesitated, then finally. "Asli, your father is not who you think he is."

Asli blinked, then laughed. It was a short, disbelieving sound.

"What?" she said, shaking her head slightly. "Don’t tell me you’ve been listening to Ahmet and Markus now."

Cole didn’t smile. He didn’t react. He just looked at her.

"Your father killed my family."

The words landed like a thousand slaps. And something in her stilled completely.

Her lips parted slightly, but nothing came out. The laughter died before it could fully fade, leaving behind something thinner. Her brows drew together, just barely, like her mind hadn’t caught up yet.

"No," she said quietly, almost automatically. A small shake of her head followed. "That doesn’t..."

"He wanted me," Cole cut in, his voice steady now. "They didn’t agree."

Her gaze snapped back to him.

"So he killed my parents and the whole sect."

The room felt smaller.

"He dragged me in," he continued. "Gave me a place by your side."

Her fingers curled slightly against the bedsheet.

"I joined to protect my brother," he added. "But somehow... he ended up here too."

"Who is he?" she asked.

Cole shook his head. "I can’t say."

"I won’t touch him," she said immediately, sitting straighter. "I promise."

He looked at her then.

Really looked. And for people like them, promises weren’t just words. He believed her.

His lips parted. "Daniel."

It came out barely above a whisper but she heard it.

Her eyes widened. "Daniel?" she repeated, the name settling heavily. "You mean... that Daniel?" Her mind raced, piecing things together too fast, too messy. "What"

Cole looked away. Like he wished he could take it back.

"So all this time..." she began slowly, her voice sharpening, "you two knew each other?"

A scoff slipped out. "And you expect me to believe my father had no reason? Maybe your father betrayed him. Maybe after killing him, he took pity and chose you to take over."

"No." The word came fast and firm.

"He killed my mother too," Cole said. "And every single one in our sect. And you know the rule," he continued, his voice lower now. "When a man dies without honor, his sons don’t fill their place. Your father didn’t give us his place, yes but if my father died because he was dishonest even myself and my brother would’ve died too."

Her chest tightened.

"We would’ve become slaves. Your father brought me here to watch you and report everything you did."

Her gaze dropped. Then slowly lifted back to him. Usually, that would’ve gotten him killed but Cole had been through it all.

"But I didn’t," he added quickly. "I couldn’t."

His voice softened. "I started seeing you as... my people."

The words hung there.

Asli didn’t move or speak.

Her thoughts clashed, one over the other, loud, and relentless.

Her father.

The man she had followed. Respected. Raised her. Built herself around. Was capable of killing the innocent?

How could he kill a whole sect for one person?

Her fingers tightened.

’What else...?’ Was he hiding from her? The thought didn’t leave her lips, but it echoed anyway.

"That’s my secret," Cole said quietly. "And when you punished me that day..."

A small breath left him.

"It felt right."

Her eyes flicked up.

"Because I knew I deserved it." He added.

A long silence followed.

"I can’t apologize for him," she said finally, her voice steady but holding so much regret. "But I trust you. More than you think. That day... I was angry."

Her gaze dropped briefly.

"I thought you betrayed me."

She looked back at him.

"But this, it isn’t your fault. You did what you had to do. You need to survive and protect the only family you have left. And your brother?" she added quietly. "Same thing. He should not be judged by the things he did to survive. I’m honestly okay with him joining us, if he wants to."

Cole let out a frustrated breath, dragging a hand through his hair. "That’s the problem. He didn’t have to."

He shook his head.

"He could’ve stayed away and lived peacefully. But he chose this. He had a choice."

Asli’s lips curved faintly. She didn’t know he carried something this heavy and yet never failed his purpose. "He’s smart."

Cole blinked, then let out a small, almost surprised laugh. "Very."

His expression softened slightly. "He was one of the top three students to graduate with straight As throughout his life."

A hint of pride slipped into his voice. "He only got a B once. Even then, he was bedridden."

Asli noticed. Of course she did.

And for a second, just a second she wished she could undo things she had never even seen happen.

"I’m sorry," she said quietly.

The words surprised even her.

Cole shook his head. "It wasn’t you. I wanted revenge," he admitted. "Still do."

His eyes met hers.

"But if you tell me to stop... I will."

She held his gaze.

Long enough to weigh it.

"Revenge..." she murmured, her voice quieter now. "It eats at you. It’s worse than whatever started it."

Her gaze softened just slightly.

"But I won’t take that from you. You deserve that much."

Then her expression shifted. "But my father will kill you."

She hadn’t hesitated with those words.

"There’d be no second chances. And I need you alive. "Something lighter flickered in her tone, just briefly. "My children are going to need a terrifying uncle to train them."

"You want more?" He joked, chuckling in the end.
