Chapter Two Hundred and Thirteen
The apartment door clicked shut behind her. Laughter drifted from the living area, very light, and carefree. Josephine was sprawled across the couch, one leg tucked under her, while Matilda sat beside her, talking fast, with her hands moving as she spoke. Whatever it was, it had both of them giggling.
Asli didn’t stop to ask what that was. She just walked past them like she hadn’t heard a thing.
Matilda noticed anyway.
"Asli..." She pushed off the couch almost immediately, hurrying after her. "How was your mission?"
Asli glanced at her. Just once. A quick sweep of her eyes over her face, checking, mostly measuring before looking ahead again.
She kept walking.
By the time she reached the stairs, her hand was already on the handle.
"Where’s your head tie?" she asked, almost absently.
Matilda smiled, as if waiting for her to ask that.
"Which one?" Her question informed Asli that her instinct was right. This was a question or the kind Asli had never asked her before. She should’ve looked surprised or wondered why she was asking. Or look at her strangely. Matilda’s reaction proved she had been waiting for this.
"Is it the one that looks silky but the fabric is cotton?" the young girl asked again when she noticed Asli had not said anything. She wanted to fold her arms and ask her if she forgot who she was lying to.
Among all her head ties and bands, she decided to describe the very one she was asking about.
Asli turned slightly, just enough for her eyes to meet Matilda’s.
"Go and bring it." She decided to humor her.
Matilda didn’t argue. She nodded quickly and disappeared down the hallway, returning moments later with the neatly folded head tie resting on her palm.
She held it out.
Asli didn’t take it.
Her gaze dropped to it for a second, then lifted back to Matilda’s face. The silence stretched and she saw as she squirmed through it.
"If I find out there’s something you’re not telling me..." Asli began, her voice irritated, yet controlled.
The words trailed off. Her gaze shifted briefly, as her thoughts had already moved elsewhere. She remembered she was going to be a mother. Matilda was like someone she had raised, with the help of her nanny. She wouldn’t want Matilda to fear her. So if, in the end, she did then the possibility of her child fearing her too, would be high.
A faint exhale left her.
Besides, if anything was wrong, she and Josephine wouldn’t be chatting happily.
"You know you can tell me anything, right?" She decided to say.
Matilda’s brows lifted slightly, surprised. This should have been the reaction to the previous question. She sighed fully.
Asli’s gaze flicked toward the living room, then back to her. "If anyone is bothering you..." She gave a small pause. "You tell me. Okay?"
She passed another glance at her.
"You and her."
Matilda nodded quickly, a small smile forming as she had just been handed something warm and unexpected.
She would only have to ask Cole to carefully follow her every move. She’d find out what it was and if she found out Markus was harming her or doing anything to her, she would deal with him.
She awkwardly walked away, heading for her room. She pushed her door open. She didn’t remember lying down. Only that the room had been quiet... and her eyes had closed for a second.
The knock pulled her out of it.
Her brows pulled together as she sat up, her head tie now loosely wrapped around her hair. She fixed it instantly.
"Come in."
The door creaked open and Cole stepped in, pausing just inside like he wasn’t sure if he should come any further.
"Did I disturb you?" he asked, his voice low.
She shook her head, dragging a hand lightly over her face. "No."
He stayed where he was.
Standing and watching. Like something was sitting on his tongue that he didn’t quite know how to say.
Her gaze lifted to him fully now.
"Cole?"
His eyes dropped.
Not to the floor but to her stomach. The shift was small but she caught it.
"How’s the baby?" he asked.
A quiet laugh slipped out of her before she could stop it, soft and almost amused.
"The baby is fine."
She adjusted slightly on the bed, studying him now.
"Cole..."
He looked up. She hesitated just for a second.
"You and I..." she started slowly, choosing her words as she went. "We’ve been doing this for a long time."
He didn’t interrupt.
"You know what this place is," she continued. "You know how my father is." Her gaze dropped briefly, then returned to him.
"It’s not safe here." The words came out simpler than she had planned.
"Not for the baby," she added. "I’ll have to leave."
Cole didn’t react immediately.
Then he nodded.
"It’s one of the best decisions you’ve ever made," he said.
Her brows lifted slightly. She knew if he had the chance, he’d express his distaste at her choice of man.
"Just tell me when," he added. "We’ll leave everything behind so no one suspects anything."
She stilled.
"We?" The word slipped out before she could stop it.
Cole met her eyes, there was no hesitation in his.
"Yes."
Something warm spread through her chest.
She let out a small breath, her lips curving despite herself. A quiet laugh followed, like she didn’t even realize it had escaped.
He smiled.
"Besides," he added, a hint of humor creeping into his voice, "I don’t trust anyone else with you."
Her brow arched. She pretty much believed she was the warmest person anyone could wish for. ’Naaa. Who am I kidding.’ She said to herself.
"You might kill them before they prove they’re innocent."
The words were light, almost a joke. But they didn’t land that way. Not entirely. Something tightened in her chest.
"About that..." she said, her voice dropping slightly. "I’m sorry."
And she meant it.
Cole shook his head. "You shouldn’t be."
She looked at him.
"You did what you had to do." He continued.
"Still," she insisted quietly. "You were innocent."
That sat between them for a moment.
Then, he said "I have a twin brother."
Her head tilted, curiosity slipping in before she could hide it. "Really? What? How?" She stopped herself, then let out a small breath. "Where is he?"
