Chapter Two Hundred and Thirty- One

Fatigue settled deep in Ahmet’s bones. The mission had stretched longer than expected, and all he wanted now was a hot shower, a few hours of uninterrupted sleep, and Asli.

The thought alone drew the faintest smile to his lips.

He could already picture himself finding her in bed, slipping in beside her without a word, burying his face against her neck just to steal in the scent that somehow made every exhausting day worth it.

Instead, the moment he stepped inside, silence met him. His eyes swept across the hall. Something tightened inside his chest. It wasn’t enough to make him panic.

Not yet.

He turned toward the kitchen. The kitchen stood just as quiet. The kettle sat where someone had forgotten it. A half-filled mug rested on the counter. It was still warm.

His jaw tightened.

He walked back into the hall just as Matilda’s aunt emerged from the corridor, wiping her hands on her apron.

"Oh... you’re back." She welcomed him with a smile.

"Where’s Asli?"

She blinked. "I..."

She looked toward the front door as though expecting Asli to appear.

"I don’t know. I was fast asleep. It’s been long since I slept this well in an afternoon. I thought she was upstairs."

Ahmet’s expression hardened and he said nothing.

Last night had stretched until dawn. The mission had demanded every ounce of his attention. He could focus because he knew the men he had planted in Marco’s Villa.

Philip had only managed to signal that they’d returned safely. He hadn’t asked for details. He’d planned to speak to Asli himself this evening when he returned.

He needed to calm her down before she did something reckless again.

Marco was already looking for them. Besides, the last thing Asli needed was unnecessary stress. Not with his child growing inside her. He knew he needed to really pay attention to her. He could take a break and make her feel she wasn’t alone. He was ready to do that and was hoping to talk to her about it.

His hand slipped into his pocket. The phone was already in his hand before he reached their bedroom.

He dialed Philip. The call connected almost immediately.

"Hello, Boss."

Ahmet stopped.

Why was he whispering? Ahmet’s brows drew together.

He knew Philip feared him but fear had never made the man whisper. That got his mind racing far more than it already was.

"Your location." He ordered brief silence.

"Not anywhere near her."

Ahmet’s hand tightened around the phone. Something cold settled in his stomach.

He knew Philip well enough. That wasn’t an answer. He was avoiding asking any further questions concerning him. His voice became dangerously quiet.

"Speak." As he said it, his eyes caught something lying near the foot of the bed. It was a single white sheet.

Crumbled and crushed along the edges as though someone had gripped it too tightly.

He bent and picked it up. The paper crackled softly beneath his fingers.

Across the top were bold letters:

DNA PATERNITY ANALYSIS REPORT

He was expecting to see Matilda’s and Marco’s names. However...

Below that sat rows of laboratory information.

Sample A (Reference): Submitted by Settimo.

Sample B (Comparison): Submitted by Asli.

For a second he thought he had read wrong. Why would anyone demand a DNA result between the two of them? This wasn’t making sense to him

Further down, columns of genetic markers filled the page strings of numbers and letters that meant little to anyone outside a laboratory.

His eyes skipped them impatiently. They landed on the final section.

Conclusion:

Probability of biological relationship: 99.99%.

Interpretation: The tested individuals are consistent with a biological parent-child relationship.

Ahmet’s eyes remained fixed on the page.

His breathing slowed.

Very slowly...

He lowered the report from his face.

"Philip..." His voice was barely above a whisper now. "What happened? What is this?" Ahmet’s voice came through, sharp and impatient. The sounds of moving vehicles and distant voices echoed faintly in the background.

"Boss... I don’t know exactly what’s happening. But... when Asli went to Marco’s doctor..."

Ahmet didn’t interrupt.

"...he tried to bargain for his life."

Philip swallowed.

"He said Boss Asli’s biological father was alive. Before he got killed... he mentioned your name."

Ahmet’s brows knitted together.

"My name?"

"He said..." Philip searched for the exact words. "’Asli... Ahmet is your...’ He never finished." Philip exhaled slowly. "That was enough to make Boss Asli suspicious."

"So she went looking for her biological father. She came to Big Boss’s villa, demanded DNA samples from everyone connected to the Villa..." He explained everything as briefly as he could. "The results came today. I honestly don’t understand what’s going on. Maybe Alice can explain it better."

"Ahmet." Her voice cracked. "I’m sorry. Big Boss is going to kill me. I thought it was impossible. I never imagined..."

"Alice." Ahmet’s voice cut through her panic. "What is the meaning of this?"

"I told Big Boss the result was negative before the laboratory finished. I thought..."

She shook her head frantically although he couldn’t see her, he just knew she did. It was a habit of hers when she messed up.

"I thought there was no way it could be positive." Her breathing became ragged. "I was wrong."

Ahmet was impatiently about to move the phone from his ear.

Then...

Her next words tumbled out. "Asli is on her way to abort the baby."

Everything went quiet.

So quiet that even Ahmet couldn’t hear his own breathing anymore.

For a long moment, he wasn’t sure whether he was refusing to believe what he’d heard or whether he simply couldn’t make sense of it.

When Ahmet finally spoke, his voice had changed.

It was icy cold and controlled.

"Find her. Don’t let her out of your sight and make sure she doesn’t do anything stupid. I’m going to my father. If anyone can explain this..." His jaw tightened. "...it’s him."

Ahmet rushed out of the bedroom. His eyes fell on Markus who was tiredly lying on the couch as if he was never going to move again.

One look at Ahmet and he was on high alert, asking him what was happening.

"I don’t know." He responded. His heartbeat wouldn’t stop pounding.

Hard and violent. Images flashed through his mind without permission. Asli hiding her laugh in his arms.

Her annoyance whenever he coaxed her. The first time she’d kissed him. The countless nights she’d fallen asleep against his chest without noticing.

His fingers twitched. He had forced her into this. If only he let her be. Why was he so much attracted to her if she was his sister?

"I need answers, Markus. Tell me how my father may be Asli’s father." He told him and Markus watched him in confusion.

"I don’t understand."

"Me too. We need to find my father." He said as they hurriedly drove to their Villa.

"No wonder they had this war between them. Not knowing my father got Marco’s woman pregnant and somehow Marco took her in." Ahmet concluded while Markus drove.

"Relax. You shouldn’t conclude. Uncle would never do something like that. You know we only devoted ourselves to one woman."

"Then tell me why Asli is my sister?"

"There should be a mix-up somewhere. If Marco and Uncle are enemies, there’d be no way that beast would raise Uncle’s child. Besides, there’s no way she is your sister. Don’t believe that weird shit."

He knew his father would never do that to his mother. But he couldn’t think of anything to justify this.

His thoughts slammed back to when he had told them about his involvement with her. The breakdown when she heard Asli was pregnant. She hadn’t been angry.

She’d been...

Afraid.

What about the panic and the terror he saw in his mother’s eyes every time Marco’s name was mentioned?

His eyes flew wide open. Something cold crawled down his spine.

"I am going to lose it if this is true."
