A wagon of fresh produce rolled on a broad granite avenue and stopped beneath the rows of neatly pruned elms and gas lamps.

The estate’s wrought iron gates opened and maids walked toward the wagon. They stood on the raised stone sidewalks and inspected baskets of apples and herbs.

Another wagon rolled in and brought baskets of pastries and freshly baked biscuits.

The maids collected all the baskets and hurried inside the estate’s gates.

The baskets rested against their hips as they walked through a winding pale stone path lined by silver birch and black yew.

The faint scene of fresh bread gradually disappeared beneath the fragrance of chrysanthemum and lilies as the maids made it past the flower beds.

Walking further, the walls turned into sculpted hedges neatly trimmed into geometrical shapes.

The maids then saw the statue of a weeping winged angel with her head lowered and a cloaked woman holding a lamp.

The statues were ancient and overbearing but the maids simply thought that they had been walking for three minutes now.

Two minutes later, they heard the sound of running water and finally saw the gargoyle fountain in the middle of the empty space before the main manor.

The baskets changed hands and went to the kitchen where they were prepped and placed onto a multi-tiered stand which was eventually placed beside cups, saucers, and pots on a wooden cart and sent away.

A maid brought the wooden cart before Vincent’s bedroom and knocked.

The door opened.

A tall, blonde-haired maid walked out and inspected the cart before pulling it inside.

The door closed.

"Afternoon tea, young master?"

Anastasia asked while already brewing a fresh cup.

"Two sugars please."

Vincent said absentmindedly as he wrote a few important things on a paper with the title: ’What is cultivation?’

He did not have time to think over these matters before as his house was collapsing.

But right now, there was some time before he left for the county.

A few words were already written on the paper.

Veins.

Heart.

Crest.

Soul.

First Vein: Ash Vein.

Partial Awakening.

Vein Awakening.

Crest Formation.

Fate Authority Seed?

Fate Deviation.

Fate.

Entanglement.

Vincent wrote as many things as he knew. Some were unrelated to cultivation but maybe he might reach somewhere with them.

Most of the stuff he learnt was from the system notifications, and when he asked the system to elaborate them, it said it could not answer.

Vincent was already used to its useless nature.

He tapped the pen on the paper and tried to think whatever he could.

The warm aroma of freshly brewed tea broke him out of his daze.

Anastasia placed a cup of tea and snacks before him.

Her eyes unknowingly glanced at the paper Vincent was writing.

As she noticed the title, she immediately thought, ’The young master hasn’t been briefed yet and is trying to understand cultivation on his own...’

The matter regarding cultivation was kept tightly under wraps.

A person could awaken and go his entire life without knowing he was a cultivator if no one informed him.

Usually an awakened’s close ones would inform him but if he lacked those then... tough luck.

’What has he figured out so far...’

Anastasia snuck a curious glance, only to see the last few words and turn completely still.

’Fate... Entanglement... how... who told him?’

Being his attendant since his awakening, she knew he hadn’t met anyone who could’ve revealed these things to him.

Then how exactly did he come across these words?

And regarding the word ’Entanglement’ itself, even Anastasia as a regressor learned of it recently from Vivienne.

’Did Madam say it to the young master?’

The possibility was low.

From the moment Vincent arrived from the county to now, he had barely been alone with Vivienne to get briefed on it.

’The only time they were together and I wasn’t nearby was when they went to the court. But even there, I doubt Madam would speak of such sensitive topics in public...’

Anastasia wasn’t one to meddle in other people’s affairs and would especially involve herself with Vincent’s. He was her master at the end of the day and she vowed to protect his secrets just last night.

"Young master..."

Anastasia softly called out.

"Hm?"

With a teacup in hand, Vincent leaned back on his chair and asked.

"...please forgive me for accidentally looking at your paper."

She bowed first and apologized.

Vincent shook his free hand. "It’s not a problem. In fact, if you know something, you can explain it to me."

He wasn’t aware of how big of a deal these simple words were and Anastasia could tell.

"Young master..."

She took a deep breath.

"...I believe you should take this paper to Madam and ask her. In the meantime, please do not let anyone see it."

She could’ve explained many things herself but she didn’t know if she was allowed to.

Vincent was her superior and Vivienne was even higher in the hierarchy. A person at a lower rank like herself would get into trouble if she divulged even a word wrong.

’Even if I’m experienced and know most stuff accurately... Madam surely knows more than me. After all... even with four lifetimes... the Still Soul Sutra and Yin Yang Dao Sutra were arts of legend for me but Madam possesses both at this period of time.’

Vincent took a sip of tea and asked, "She won’t scold me for not knowing the basics?"

Vincent was under the assumption that this was basic stuff which might’ve already been told to the previous Vincent. He lacked his memories so he could only assume things.

Anastasia merely shook her head. "Please reach out to Madam as soon as possible."

"Is she available right now?" Vincent asked.

"I’ll check and get back to you."

Anastasia was about to leave when Vincent realized something and stopped her.

"Yes?" Anastasia asked.

Vincent stood up with the paper. "I’ll go see her myself."

"What if she’s busy?"

Vincent was already at the door and holding the knob.

"What do you mean busy? She should never be too busy for me — her son, mind you."

Vincent was out of the door, leaving behind a silent Anastasia.

’...the young master is being unreasonable again, but somehow it’s not worrying.’

She shook her head and walked out of the bedroom.

Vincent first went to his mother’s study, she wasn’t there. He went to her room and she wasn’t there either.

Now it made him feel he should’ve just let Anastasia check on her.

After searching both the study and her room to no avail, he stopped a passing maid to ask where his mother was.

She pointed him toward the inner courtyard and with Anastasia’s help, he reached this place.

It was an open air courtyard just past the main hall but still within the manor.

Vincent found his mother sitting on a stone bench with her bare feet on the grass.

She was having afternoon tea with Linda by her side.

Vivienne’s gaze fell on Vincent as he arrived with Anastasia standing behind him.

Now that she saw him clearly beside her...

’He wasn’t exaggerating about disappearing...’

"Mom."

Vincent called out and reached her, sitting right beside and shaking his head.

"It’s so difficult to find you."

"What’s the matter?" Vivienne asked and took a small sip of tea.

Vincent thought of complaining some more but then saw his mother’s peaceful expression.

He had a change of mind.

He glanced at her and said calmly, "I felt like seeing my beautiful mom again. Is it a problem?"

Anastasia and Linda lowered their gazes. It felt like they were intruding on some private conversation again.

Could the young master not dismiss them first before talking to the Madam?

Vivienne put her teacup down and replied, "What do you need, my dear?"

Vincent shook his head.

"Why would I need anything? Can I not just come see my mom when I like and tell her she’s beautiful?"

He turned to Anastasia and Linda.

"What do you guys say?"

The two maids flashed a slightly stiff but polite smile in response, not answering.

The young master should not drag them in his conversation! They both complained inwardly.

Vivienne put her teacup down.

"Alright, my dear, what have you really come here for."

Vincent sighed and spread out his hands.

"I can’t believe that my dearest mom thinks her child only comes to her when he wants something."

He poked at his chest.

"It hurts right here to know this."

Vivienne rolled her eyes.

Anastasia and Linda’s lips curved in big smiles.

Vincent shook his head.

"Fine."

"Since my own mother insists on thinking so little of me..."

He dramatically unfolded a paper.

"Explain this."

Vivienne didn’t bother commenting and took the paper from his hands.

She gave it a read.

[...Fate Authority Seed?

Fate Deviation.

Fate.

Entanglement...]

Her brows slightly knit together.

She handed her teacup to Linda and seriously glanced at Vincent while folding the paper.

"How did you come across these words, Vin?"
