"How did you come across these words, Vin?"

[Warning: divulging the system’s existence will result in an erasure of the system.]

Vivienne’s seriousness and the system’s warning slightly surprised Vincent.

’...is she talking about everything or specific words?’

Vincent tilted his head and asked, "Which ones?"

He wasn’t too flustered.

"All of them."

Vincent was flustered.

His body stiffened.

’All of them?’

Anxiety swelled from his stomach up.

’The previous Vincent knew nothing and wasn’t told anything about cultivation?’

Vincent knew he had to immediately come up with a proper reason. Anything stupid won’t work as it was his mother before him.

This lady quite possibly knew everything there was about Vincent and would quickly catch a lie.

How exactly was he supposed to say he had no memories of the past?

The gears in Vincent’s mind spun faster.

A few seconds had passed in reality and his silence and reaction did not go unnoticed by the maids and Vivienne.

"Mom."

Vincent had a serious expression on his face.

"Would you believe me if I said I had visions and dreams?"

Vivienne crossed her legs.

"Go on."

The jester’s inheritance helped Vincent remain calmer despite the tense situation and have a smoother thought process.

He sighed and folded his hands.

"Do you remember what happened to me after the masquerade ball, in the carriage?"

Vivienne nodded. How could she forget that moment?

"Right... so..."

Vincent framed his words properly.

"I suddenly found myself in great pain and had visions. It was a rainy day... a casket was being lowered..."

The moment Vincent said these words, Anastasia’s eyes widened.

’How...’

She controlled herself from trembling lest Linda or the Madam caught onto her reaction.

"...I don’t remember too much as everything was fragmented but I think it was me in the casket as..."

Vincent let the words settle in and gauged his mother’s reaction.

Vivienne sat still without any movement. She wasn’t even blinking and waiting for him to finish.

Linda and Anastasia were staring in his direction with utmost seriousness.

"...you and Vanessa were watching it get lowered. You both looked like you had cried for many hours."

Vivienne’s eyes slightly narrowed.

She did not think Vincent was lying about his vision. She did not think it was unreal either.

However...

’How could he die with me by his side?’

Death could not touch Vincent if Vivienne did not allow it.

It applied even now.

Vincent had his awakening that day and these visions were of the Dao itself.

The Dao does not fabricate hypothetical scenarios. It presents everything as is without any filtering or bias.

A cultivator could comprehend its mysteries wrongly, and given Vincent’s inexperience, he may or may not have derived the meaning properly.

Vivienne had a few important questions to ask, but she let him finish first.

"...I was switching between visions and pain... eventually... I..."

Vincent hesitated.

There was a troubled expression on his face and he averted his gaze from Vivienne.

Vivienne extended her hand out.

She held his palm and gently squeezed it.

"Pain lessens when shared, Vincent," she said softly.

That day, even with her using the Still Soul Sutra, Vincent’s soul strongly seemed to be rejecting reality itself.

She was sure that if she hadn’t intervened or if she did not have the Still Soul Sutra, his body would’ve turned into an empty shell.

There were so many factors that went into play and most of them were tied to fate.

Vivienne was not a fate authority and did not understand its secrets or the way it worked.

The only thing she was sure of was that none but her could’ve saved Vincent, and maybe... fate had most likely pushed her toward him.

Thinking of that day made thorns crawl under Vivienne’s skin.

Her hand clutched just a bit more firmly.

Vincent thought of this as further reassurance.

However, he shook his head.

"Mom, what I’m about to say won’t bring me pain... it’s... I’m hesitant because..."

What he wanted to say next might bring a massive change in his relationship with his mother.

But this was something Vincent felt like doing.

He did not wish to keep the person who cared so much about him in the dark.

"I’m here for you..."

Vivienne said softly and used her other hand as well to envelope Vincent’s.

Vincent sighed.

"Mom, what I would say would bring pain to you, not to me. And I don’t wish to bring such misery upon you."

Vivienne did not know what her son was implying.

She looked at him and said, "You are healthy and by my side, yes?"

Vincent nodded.

"And your sister is healthy and also by my side, correct?"

Vincent nodded again.

Vivienne held Vincent’s face and caressed it with her thumb.

"Then there’s nothing that would make me feel hurt."

Vincent stared into her resolute blue eyes and held her hand holding his face.

"Mom, no matter what I say next, you should know for sure that I love you and nothing would make me think otherwise. You will always be the most beautiful and I would never wish to not spend time with you."

Vivienne nodded lightly.

Anastasia and Linda... the two attendants who were still standing behind their masters, felt butterflies in their stomach.

This conversation was not something the likes of them were worthy of knowing, but their masters had not dismissed them.

They also could not run away like before.

Anastasia was witness to the awakening Vincent had that day and might be needed.

Linda was by Vivienne’s side long before she had Vincent.

She had seen Vincent and helped Vivienne raise him from day one.

The two maids could only lower their heads and vow in their hearts to keep everything that was happening a secret they’d take to their tombs.

Vincent had a serious expression on his face.

He finally said, "I don’t have any memories of the past, mom. It happened on the same day I awakened, just right in the morning after I woke up. I didn’t even know who I was."

Anastsia and Linda stared at Vincent with agape mouths.

Their gaze quickly shifted to Vivienne.

Vivinene’s expression had not changed.

"Vincent," she said, her tone even softer than before.

"Mom," he replied and stared at her calmly.

"That’s it," she said. "Nothing else matters."

The maids had a question mark on their faces.

For the first time they could not follow what was happening.

Vincent, however, had a big smile on his face. An almost relieved smile.

His eyes stung.

Perhaps it was the ginger in his tea he had before coming.

Perhaps the humidity.

Whatever it was, it didn’t matter.

Vincent got the answer he needed.

He leaned forward and hugged her without permission.

"I love you," he said softly and firmly wrapped his hands around her, as if afraid that she might disappear.

Vivienne gently patted his back and replied in an almost inaudible whisper,

"I love you too."
