[Ding!]

[Entanglement upgraded.]

[Bound Link(stable) → Deep Entanglement]

[Subject: Vivienne D’Arc]

The system’s notifications were quieter than usual and did not disturb Vincent.

A few moments later.

Vincent broke the hug.

Vivienne looked at him.

The maids kept their heads lowered.

The moment settled.

Eventually, Vivienne asked, "So... did every word come to you from your visions and dreams?"

The maids looked up.

Anastasia was especially more interested and looked at Vincent.

How did he come across Entanglement when even she only knew of it in this life?

Vincent nodded at Vivienne’s question.

"There’s this Fate Auth—"

"Stop."

Vivienne put a finger on his lips.

"Don’t mention those words directly."

Vincent nodded and Vivienne put her finger away.

"Right, so there’s this seed that got inside me and then I popped a vein, I think?"

The ladies were silent at such... peculiar wording.

"Remember that I told you I had a dream of splitting a mountain with an axe? I do feel that I can do it with the right practice. But then this..."

Vincent took the paper from his mother’s hands and unfolded it, pointing at Veins, Heart, Crest, and Soul.

"...I think this needs an upgrade if I ever want to split a mountain?"

"Anyway, I only have a very vague idea and don’t know much. I hope you can teach me whatever there is."

Vivienne was slightly puzzled.

She pointed at the word ’Fate Authority Seed’ and asked, "If this is true, then I don’t think you can learn the axe. It’ll be counterproductive."

"Why?"

Vivienne glanced at Anastasia. "Explain."

Anastasia nodded.

"Young master, a soul has a fixed path or affinity. Basically..."

If a cultivator’s soul had the path of sword or affinity for the sword, he had no choice but to learn the sword.

If he learned the axe for example, he would never grow or be able to increase his cultivation.

Likewise, Vincent mentioned the Fate Authority Seed.

An authority seed was not a real life seed but an imaginary starter or spark needed to trigger awakening.

When a person understands their path better or works toward it, the seed starts forming and eventually sprouts within the soul, resulting in the awakening.

A seed is not necessarily needed but generally is the most common cause of awakening.

Awakening can happen anytime as long as there’s a strong trigger.

In Vanessa’s case, she awakened immediately after she had her first real fight and there was no seed involved.

Vincent understood this. However, he got the axe fragment as a roll reward and he knew he could learn it till he could actually split an axe like the expert in his memory.

He also had an abnormal soul and he remembered the old man in his memory saying...

"...in a world where one soul can have only one authority, upon yours, any authority can be engraved."

This probably meant Vincent could choose any path he wished.

"...while we are on the topic of souls..."

Linda was the one who spoke this time.

As per her, the soul was the essence of cultivation and everything revolved around it.

A simple rule of thumb was that the more one worked toward understanding their path, the stronger their soul would be and the greater the cultivation.

"...and this understanding comes from comprehending the path’s Dao..."

Dao was the meaning available everywhere.

Vincent thought of it like laws of physics.

Gravitation, magnetism, quantum mechanics... there was so much about the universe and these were the few laws the modern people knew that helped them understand it better.

Dao was something similar.

It wasn’t laws like physics but actual meaning.

For example: physics states a ball falls down due to gravity.

But Dao?

Dao has answers to everything from why the ball was in the upward position, why it fell down, why it rebounded, where exactly it was in the third nano second, why the person decided to drop it on this very moment, this very day, why it was fated to be dropped at exact this point and so on.

Anything and everything went. There was far too much meaning.

This is where paths came in.

Every cultivator only comprehended the Dao specific to their path.

Taking the example of the ball again and Earth’s people:

A person studying potential energy would be interested in just the energy of the ball at rest.

A person studying kinetic energy would be interested in just the energy of the ball when it moves and so on.

A sword cultivator comprehended the Dao of sword while an axe cultivator did so for the axe.

As the cultivator comprehended the Dao and understood more about his path, his soul would strengthen.

"...this is the most basic understanding of soul and Dao."

Linda then spoke more about cultivation, particularly the Veins, Heart, and Crest.

Vincent understood veins as the equivalent of body cultivation.

The stronger the veins, the more capable the body is for accommodating a stronger soul.

At no point in time should the soul outgrow the body or the body outgrow the soul. It’s dangerous in either case.

The Heart was like willpower. Cultivation would stagnate if a person did not have the will to grow even if he was working on his path.

The Heart was connected to the soul.

The veins were connected to the soul.

And at last, the Crest was the physical projection of the soul.

It did not mean the soul was projected physically, it meant the soul’s powers could be used in physical form via the Crest.

A sword cultivator’s soul could form a sword projection which could be used to slay enemies.

The Crest was not limited to one projection and would constantly upgrade and expand if needed.

This also explained how cultivators could summon a thousand swords out of nowhere.

As one progressed in their cultivation, their soul would become more defined.

Everyone starts with a small blob at their birth and it gets bigger, stronger, and more defined.

For the common man, until their deaths, the soul was usually nothing more than a hazy phantom.

For a strong mortal cultivator, the soul generally looked like them.

As the cultivation talk progressed, Vincent showed a considerable interest toward it which made the maids and Vivienne explain more.

Vincent showed a myriad of expressions and emotions upon learning the different things. Most of his surprise stemmed from how many similarities he found about cultivators from the novels from Earth.

At one point he wondered if Earth had transmigrators too.

In any case, the surroundings got darker as the sun disappeared in the horizon.

The courtyard had many gas lamps so they didn’t have to worry about illumination.

Somewhere in the middle of their talks, the four had changed positions.

The grass was more comfortable and they sat there.

Vincent’s head was on his mother’s lap as he listened.

She caressed his hair and continued to explain about cultivation.

"There are eight veins in your body. These aren’t the anatomical veins which are visible..."

She held Vincent’s wrist and pressed on the greenish-blue vein.

"...the eight veins of cultivation are different. They are formless but present throughout your body. The first vein is..."

Vincent was given a brief rundown of them.

First Vein — Lung Vein — Absorption

Second Vein — Spleen Vein — Assimilation

Third Vein — Liver Vein — Purification

Fourth Vein — Kidney Vein — Refinement

Fifth Vein — Stomach Vein — Reservoir

Sixth Vein — Heart Vein — Circulation

Seventh Vein — Spinal Vein — Conduction

Eight Vein — Crown Vein — Governance

’Oh, so the first vein is not called Ash Vein?’

[There have been some changes after the recent system update. It is indeed called Lung Vein and not Ash Vein.]

Vincent got the confirmation and moved on.

"...the young master’s first vein is only partially opened, which is a surprise," said Linda.

The Lung Vein would be opened completely after awakening for most but it wasn’t the case for Vincent.

"Awakening was the most important part. His veins will open up sooner or later," Vivienne answered.

"Certainly," Linda nodded lightly. "Had he not awakened, we wouldn’t be having this conversation."

Vincent read between the lines.

He looked at his mother and asked, "By not having this conversation, do you mean that you wouldn’t discuss this if I hadn’t awakened?"

"Yes," Vivienne said without any hesitation.

"Why?" Vincent slightly knitted his brows.

Vivienne held his face and replied,

"There are two kinds of ignorance, my dear."

She used her thumbs to ease his frown.

"The first is not knowing what exists."

"The second is knowing exactly what you’ll never have."

Vivienne sighed softly.

"I chose the kinder one."

It took Vincent a few seconds to understand what she meant.

He let the words settle in, then asked,

"Is it just me or is no one told about cultivation if they haven’t awakened?"

"No one’s told about it, young master."

Anastasia looked at him and shook her head.

"A person can go their entire life without knowing..."

Anastasia quickly briefed Vincent of how the world worked.

Cultivation was like a secret society in this world.

Everyone who knew about it would not divulge any information unless absolutely necessary due to competition.

Vincent just learnt here that fixed paths of souls did not mean unique paths.

Two different souls could definitely have the same path.

As they progressed, the competition would get intense for authority and resources.

Nobody wanted more people to join the fray because what if they awakened with the same path as theirs?

They talked about souls and paths some more, and eventually, Vivienne got back to the previous topic.

"So do you now know why you shouldn’t learn the axe?"

Vincent understood that everyone here just realized that he had fate authority.

He wasn’t meant to be an axe cultivator and learning martial arts would only slow him down.

They cared for his wellbeing and were speaking out of concern, however...

Vincent shook his head.

"I still wish to learn, mom. Vanessa has been kind enough to teach me and I want to learn it for self-defense."

Vivienne tilted her head slightly. "My dear, as you progress, you will be able to protect yourself with your cultivation."

"Yeah but can cultivation give me this opportunity to bond with my little sister? I don’t think so. I still wish to learn it."

There were multiple things wrong with Vincent’s statement and Vivienne didn’t know where to begin.

"She’s not your little—"

"Oh wow, it’s so dark." Vincent got up and looked around. "Is it dinner time?"

Anastasia and Linda stood up and dusted the grass off their skirts.

"I’ll get the table prepared," Linda said and walked away.

"I’ll help," Anastasia tagged along.

"I’ll eat!" Vincent followed right behind.

Only a few steps away and he noticed his mother hadn’t moved yet.

Vivienne was in a daze, watching her son’s back.

What she was thinking about was something known only to her.

"Don’t be sitting all day, mom. The food’s not gonna move into your stomach on its own."

Vincent said with a slight smile and gave her his hand.

Vivienne looked at it and then at him.

It was dark right now but his eyes radiated joy like the morning sun.

Her chest slightly tightened, not out of sorrow, but with a strange motherly feeling of wanting to protect him from the world.

Vivienne held his hand for support and tried standing up.

Only now did Vincent realize... she was almost double his size...

Thud!

The two fell down.

Vincent’s face was planted on something soft.

Vivienne lay on the grass on her back, blinking in amusement.

"My bad... I thought I had it in me..."

Vincent said in a muffled voice and tried to get up.

His hands ended up grabbing the very thing it shouldn’t.

Vivienne stared at the sight without saying a word more.

Vincent looked down and just realized what he was holding onto, then at his mother.

"Would you believe me if I said it was an accident?"

Vivienne stared at him for a solid few seconds.

"I would’ve, had you let go."

Vincent gave it a light squeeze while staring at her.

"Sorry..."

He said and turned to the side, lying beside her.

He looked at the clear night sky and pointed at it.

"On the bright side... I get to see the stars with you, even if it’s for a few moments."

Vivienne followed his line of sight and stared at the twinkling stars.

Vincent sneakily shifted closer to and had his shoulder touch hers.

The two were silent and stargazing.

A few moments later, Vincent thought, ’So this is how deep my relationship with her goes...’

Although the accident wasn’t on purpose, the latter parts were.

Entanglement with his mother was quite high and it did not show the words stable or unstable in the brackets, just ’Deep Entanglement’.

Vincent wanted to test what it meant. He tried doing the nefarious things but it did not result in it going down, which was quite surprising.

’I’m not going to repeat that. I’m better than that...’

Vincent sighed internally and stood up.

He gave his mother a hand again.

"Let’s try again."

Vivienne stared at it and rolled her eyes, standing up on her own.

"My dear, if you want a feel of mother’s..."

She grabbed her ample bosom and gave them a nudge.

"...just ask."

"Mom!"
