Train Survival: I Can Evolve Everything!
Chapter 20: Stormy Mountain Villa? Mystery? The Eerie!Braving the storm, Ye Qiyan walked straight to the wrecked police car nearby. After observing for a while and confirming the corpses on the ground showed no signs of turning into zombies, he began searching them.
Finally, beside a police officer's body, he found a voice recorder.
["We received a report from the Rainveil Villa on Davell Mountain. Local tycoon Ravi died there. Ah, I really don't understand these rich people. How many have died in this villa over the years? Why would anyone still choose to live here? This damned place takes two to three days to reach from our town - the distance alone is maddening."]
["However, this tycoon was one of our police station's investors. However unwilling we are, we must find his murderer. As long as we catch the killer, his daughter will surely provide more funding for our station."]
["As for the real killer... probably Ravi's maid. Who knows? If we can't find the real culprit, we'll just pin it on her. It's not like we haven't done this before, heh."]
"So this is the mission? Or rather, the surface-level mission..."
Ye Qiyan searched further and eventually found two pistols and four magazines loaded with low-grade bullets in the police car, along with a police baton. Most people would be thrilled to find such items, but unfortunately, they were of little use to him. After tossing them back into the train and taking the police badge and chief's identification, Ye Qiyan proceeded up the winding mountain road.
Rainveil Villa wasn't far from where the train had stopped. In less than fifteen minutes, Ye Qiyan stood before the iron gates of a massive black estate.
A nervous security guard rushed over from the gate. "Y-you, who are you?"
"Ah, Chief! Please come in quickly!" The guard hurriedly opened the gates and ushered Ye Qiyan inside. "The chief is finally here! You must find the real killer who murdered our master!"
The guard's tearful display gave the impression of absolute loyalty.
"How did Mr. Ravi die?"
"The master passed away four nights ago. Besides me, only his son and daughter remain in the villa, along with the butler and a maid. Chief, I'm certain that maid killed the master! You must arrest her!"
Ye Qiyan stopped walking and looked at the guard beside him. "Four days ago? So you waited a full day after Mr. Ravi's death to report it. Why?"
The guard quickly explained, "Because it's been raining nonstop all week. The villa's phone lines and internet were affected. We barely managed to make one call three days ago to summon you. Since then, we've been waiting here—no one dared leave."
Well, isn't this just a classic locked-room mystery?
Ye Qiyan had played many murder mystery games with similar settings. But if it were truly this simple, why would this be rated as a level-3 mission station? Even level-2 stations already had monsters like zombies. Level 3... this mundane?
Ye Qiyan refused to believe it could be so straightforward. The more ordinary it seemed, the more likely some unseen danger lurked beneath.
Just as the two were about to enter the estate's castle, a shrill scream suddenly came from above.
"Ah!"
Following the sound, a lightning flash illuminated the sky—a female corpse plummeted from above and crashed into the lawn nearby. Blood mixed with rainwater, forming a crimson stream across the ground.
But Ye Qiyan's gaze remained fixed on where the body had fallen from. He saw a shadow—one that clearly didn't belong to a human.
And...
"Can you feel it?"
The Sanctified Mithril Cross hanging on his chest was emitting heat.
"Indeed, not so simple after all."
"Ah! The maid! The maid is dead!" The guard beside him screamed in terror.
An elderly man with graying beard immediately ran out from the castle. The moment the guard saw him, he shrieked and fled. "It's you! You're the killer!"
The old man's face turned ashen. Watching the guard disappear into the darkness, he finally sighed. "My apologies for this unsightly display... I am this family's butler. You must be the chief from outside? So young... Ah... another death... what in the world is happening?"
"Another? Besides Master Ravi and this lady just now, who else has died?"
Ye Qiyan forced himself not to look at the bloody corpse on the ground. The butler, however, seemed accustomed to such scenes. He picked up the body and carried it to a spot on the lawn where several seemingly pre-dug graves waited.
He tossed the corpse inside. There were five graves—three already contained bodies.
"?"
The butler gave a bitter smile. "Please come inside first, Chief."
Entering the castle, the chill in the air didn't fade. If anything, Ye Qiyan felt as if something was watching him—a sensation that made his skin crawl.
"Would you like coffee? Or tea?"
"Hot water is fine."
"One moment, please."
Soon, a cup of coffee was placed before Ye Qiyan. He didn't drink it, instead asking directly, "What exactly is happening here? I was told only Master Ravi had died, but just now—"
The butler sighed. Under the dim candlelight, his bloodshot eyes appeared particularly unsettling. "Four days ago, only the master died. The young mistress and young master had a fierce argument—the young mistress believed the maid killed their father, while the young master, who was having an affair with the maid, naturally defended her. They quarreled violently. The next morning, I found the young mistress's body in the attic. The guard had feelings for her—he went mad that very day. On the third day, the young master died too... Today is the fourth day..."
"I believe I'll die sooner or later, so yesterday I dug graves for all five of us. At least when my time comes, there'll be a proper resting place... Heh... Chief, this estate is cursed. Everyone who lives here dies... I should have dissuaded the master from buying this place just because it was cheap... Ah... Too late now. Everything's over... You should leave as soon as possible."
As expected, the mystery had turned supernatural.
Ye Qiyan gripped the cross tightly. If not for this Sanctified Cross, he would have left immediately.
Taking a deep breath, he pressed on: "Given these circumstances, why are you still here?"
The butler looked up, forcing a mournful smile. "I've tried... but I can't leave this estate. The gates won't let me pass. I already told the guard—if the chief came, to not let you in. But... I'm sorry. If you find yourself unable to leave either, I'll dig a grave for you."
