Roxene flew over the large chamber, glancing down at the roiling mass of shadows below.
The Umbrashnuls had really brought out their best to try and take the fortress and force their way into the heart of the Draayer Empire.
Though, she really did not care about that in the slightest.
All of the vampires could end up dead, and she would feel nothing for them.
There were only two reasons that she was here.
The first was to keep Marcus alive.
He had a penchant for throwing himself into trouble without realizing how reckless he was being. Though that was often something that came with being strong.
There were not many threats in the world to those like him or Roxene. It was easy to get carried away and think that they were invincible.
The recent encounter with the Lava Dragon had been a wake up call in that department.
They had barely made it through the encounter, and Roxene was still beating herself up over it.
She was the one that was supposed to finish the dragon off, but she had failed and ended up mortally wounded instead.
It had been a lapse in her judgment.
She had believed that she had won already when she attacked the weakened beast.
Under the boosted power from Soul Burst, she had felt unstoppable.
Yet, being hasty and going for the finishing blow without regards to her own defenses had cost her.
The dragon allowed himself to take a nasty blow to return one of his own.
Roxene could still remember as his fangs pierces into her.
There had been a sharp cold pain that paralyzed her, and despite all of her efforts, her body had refused to move.
It was humiliating.
That dragon was a mere pale imitation of its true brethren.
Roxene had admittedly spent only a few years with her parents before being sent to Mirrion.
While there might have been some aspects of the world that were dangerous, they were nothing compared to what lay outside of it.
The threats out in the universe at large made everything on Mirrion look like cute and fluffy woodland animals.
She could still remember the horrid creature that had attacked her home when she was only just staring to become aware of herself.
She had only gotten a glance of that thing, but the image was not something she would ever forget.
It was not that much longer after that attack that Roxene was introduced to her aunt.
They had only spent what amounted to around eight months on Mirrion together, but they had grown close during that time.
Roxene could still remember when her parents and aunt had called her in to talk and told her she was being sent away.
She had cried and begged them not to, but the decision had already been made. She was unable to protect herself, and their enemies were becoming more active.
It was for her safety that she was sent to Mirrion so that she could grow in peace. Only once she had reached the peak of the world and gained the minimum strength necessary to survive would she be allowed to return.
That was still far off though.
While she had made a lot of progress fast, the exponential rise in necessary experience to go up to the next level was catching up with her.
Levels were few and far between now, which was the second reason that she had accompanied Marcus.
She knew that there would be high level opponents to fight and a good deal of experience to gain.
Honestly, what she had already earned after the fight against the dragon was already more than she was expecting.
'I understand why my aunt sent me to Marcus and my parents gave him their approval and a portion of their power.' Roxene thought, recalling how much the man had done for her.
He was the type to do everything he could for his loved ones. And Roxene knew that she was among those that he gave this label to.
Perhaps they were not as close as possible. Roxene did enjoy her independence after all.
Still, she had over time started to think of him as family as well. Not just a caretaker meant to keep her safe and usher her through this world.
'I don't imagine he'll run into any trouble against his current opponents. I'm most worried about that vampire calling herself an empress. The hungry way she looks at him is all I need to know.'
The woman had only claimed to have lost control for a moment, but Roxene saw through it.
That had been a test to gauge Marcus' resistance, no doubt about it.
After that, they had not seen the so-called empress again. Roxene's instincts told her that the vampire was plotting something.
Unfortunately, she did not have any longer to dwell on the issue as the Umbrashnuls had taken notice of her.
Attacks comprised of shadows began flying towards her.
There were hundreds of them, all of varying sizes and intensity.
Still, few presented any threat to Roxene.
They were weak, and numbers were not going to be able to make up the difference between their levels.
She easily dodged out of the way of most of the attacks, and those that were going to be hit were swallowed by a dense sphere of darkness he had conjured around her.
Some of the higher level Umbrashnuls flew up to try and meet her, but releasing a wave of her intimidation ability was all it took for them to go running. They realized how outmatched they were.
Being between level fifty and sixty would usually make them considered strong. Yet to Roxene, they might have well have ants.
Eventually she made it to her destination and dropped down in front of a large building composed of shadows.
A bunch of Umbrashnuls rushed up to attack her, but she growled at them and released her mana to let them know just how outmatched they were.
If they still decided to force the issue, she would wipe them out.
She was not averse to slaughtering the entire army of Umbrashnuls if they made themselves a nuisance. Unlike Marcus and Lyra, she cared so little about them that she would think nothing of wiping them out if that was what it took.
Fortunately, she did not have to go through the annoying effort of doing so.
A voice rang out from the shadow building telling the soldiers to stand down.
Not long after, a very tell woman cloaked in writhing shadows walked out of the builders.
She was almost three meters tall and so thin that it looked like a strong breeze would snap her in half.
Rexene was not fooled by her appearance.
This woman was strong, and the fourth name on the list of targets that had been given to them.
Of course, she was not alone.
The man may have thought that he was hidden in the shadows, but Roxene could see him just fine.
He was oddly shaped, having six gangly legs, but no arms.
His body shape was similar to a centaur's with a human-like torsos shooting out of the body of a bestial creature.
And while he was missing arms, he had a pair of shadowy blades sticking out of his shoulders instead.
"So, you must be one of the assassins that the Draayers hired. It's quite bold of you to approach me so openly." The female Umbrashnul, by the name of Llorona if Roxene remembered correctly, said.
She moved in a haunting back and forth pattern as she slowly closed in on Roxene.
What made it truly disturbing was the woman's feet were obscured by the shadows she wore like a dress, so it looked like she was sliding across the ground rather than walking.
"Hmph. I see no reason why I should bother with concealing myself against the likes of you two. I'm just here to keep a companion from getting himself into trouble and to earn a little bit of experience. I recently earned a few levels, so you two won't give me much. Still, it should be enough to get me about a third of the way to the next level."
"My, you are an uppity little beastgirl. You must not have ever had proper fear instilled into you when you were young. Allow me to rectify that."
The shadows around Llorona started to grow and creep towards Roxene, while the woman herself seemed to elongate and grow taller.
Except, before she struck, the man that had been concealing himself moved in front of her, his four glowing yellow eyes locked on Roxene.
"Llorona, do not be hasty. Her status is being falsified and her appearance is misleading. She is no beastman. What stands before us is a true mythic beast. And one far stronger than any either of us have faced before."
Roxene turned her attention towards him after he had exposed her.
He was the seventh on their list, meaning he was regarded as weaker than Llorona.
Though, while he was a couple of levels lower, it seemed he had better senses and awareness than she did.
"Well, I suppose that I've been found out. Although, I truthfully was not trying to trick anyone. I keep my real status hidden for obvious reasons, and I'm going to be using the two of you to practice fighting in my humanoid form. If you do prove challenging enough, I'll reveal what I really look like and take you seriously."
The two Umbrashnuls might have been insulted by Roxene dismissing them as threats, but they were primarily confused and wary.
Mythic beasts were not common entities, and very rarely did they get involved in conflicts between people.
"What could the Draayers have offered you to get them to fight for them? It makes no sense that a mythic beast such as yourself would work for such lowly creatures." Llorona said in her raspy voice.
"They did not offer me anything. As I said, I'm just here to protect my companion. And part of that job entails killing both of you."
