Understanding the Roxene was not going to be backing down, the two high-level Umbrashnuls pushed aside their questions about why a powerful mythic grade beast was working for the Draayer Empire and prepared for the fight of their lives.
'Umbral Fissure.'
To start things off, Roxene raised her right leg and slammed her foot into the ground.
The mana of her spell webbed its way into the ground, and a large crack of pure darkness opened up in the earth.
Both Umbrashnuls leapt to the side to avoid the initial wave of destruction coming from the powerful tier seven spell.
Of course, this was exactly as Roxene had wanted, as the two of them were now on opposite sides of the fissure.
Horrid creatures made completely of darkness soon began climbing out of the tear in the ground. It was almost like Roxene had just created a giant rift to hell and the creatures within had been released.
However, for how terrifying the conjured creatures were, they were not particularly powerful individually.
This spell was typically more for dealing with crowds of weaker enemies than being used against a couple of powerful adversaries.
Roxene's intentions though were merely to separate Llorona and Duald from each other.
She did not think that she would have any trouble even if the two worked together, but there was no telling what sorts of power a person could have. Especially when they made it up into the higher levels.
To start Roxene targeted Llorona.
She was the stronger of the two for certain, but Roxene felt she would be easier to take down.
Duald was clearly faster and more perceptive than her, and Roxene figured he would be more annoying to bring down.
Which was why she was letting the creatures crawling out of the umbral fissure distract him.
"Luminous Prison."
Roxene snapped her fingers and bars of pure light shot up around her and surrounded her first target.
For her part, Llorona had turned into an even more horrifying visage.
Before she had been tall and gangly while covered head to toe in shadowy cloth, but now she had become even taller and a writhing mass of limbs had shot out of her body.
To add to the creep factor, there were twenty of her shambling around, though only one was real. The others were just fully conjured by shadows.
Yet, as soon as the tier six light magic spell Roxene had cast completed, the woman along with her duplicates started writhing around and screeching in pain.
"Not used to the light, are you? There's not much of it down here, and I'm sure that there's even fewer beings capable of using light magic."
"Don't go gloating just because you have a few tricks. Mythic beast you may be, but your hubris shall be your downfall. The light may sting a little, but it won't snuff out my shadows." Llorona hissed.
After saying this, the dress she was wearing split open and a flood of roiling shadows spilled out towards Roxene.
She cast a shield of light spell to block the in coming wave, but to her surprise, it split apart around her and targeted the bars of her luminous prison instead.
When the shadows hit the light magic, they burst and sizzled like water connecting with something extremely hot.
At first Roxene thought this was Llorona's magic being destroyed, but she soon noticed that a dark haze was filling the air.
'Shine rin-'
Roxene was about to cast a wide area light magic spell when she suddenly lost focus and started coughing.
When she looked at her hands, she saw that there was blood in them.
'Poison!'
She was astonished that the toxin had overwhelmed her resistance.
Not only was her vitality stat incredibly high, but she had skills meant to protect her against abnormal status conditions like poison.
The fact that it had gotten through to harm her proved just how potent the poison was. Those that were weaker could have easily seen themselves dead in seconds.
To counteract the toxin, Roxene channeled more mana through her body and activated her Shine Form racial ability.
It was similar to Marcus' Embodiment of light, though not quite as powerful. Though it also consumed almost no stamina in comparison to Marcus' powerful but draining unique skill.
Roxene could keep Shine Form going almost indefinitely.
Fortunately, the light around her added another layer of protection against the toxic haze that had suffused the area.
The magic tried to reach Roxene, but the glow around her dissipated the substance whenever it got close.
Except, the shadowy haze was not the worst of the sudden environmental changes.
The ground under Roxene's feet had suddenly become soft and wet like mud, and shapes that looked like gnarled trees had risen up all around her.
What was most disconcerting, however, was that the light from her Luminous Cage spell was barely visible through the haze.
It only took Roxene a few moments to realize what was going on.
"A domain type ability." She said, fixing a glare at Llorona.
"Yes, this is my secret trump card that I've rarely had need to use. I couldn't allow you to trap me with that cage of light, so I've trapped you in here with me instead. Welcome to my Gloom Mire."
After saying that, Llorona faded into the shadows of her domain.
Roxene thought that she was still able to keep track of the woman, until she noticed several other presences moving through the haze that she could not differentiate from the woman.
The power of her domain seemed to extend not only to creating a poison fog and advantageous terrain but also increased the potency of some of her other abilities.
'Laser.'
Roxene tried firing a beam of light in a wide arc through the figures skulking about, but the spell did not get far before winking out of existence.
The shadowy haze already had moved in like some sort of ravenous creature and eaten into the light magic until it was snuffed out.
Focusing on her senses, Roxene found that it was attempting to do the same thing to the aura of light around her, but it was being destroyed faster than it could attack.
So long as she kept her Shine Form active, she would be protected from the negative effects of the domain.
That did not change the fact that she was stuck.
She would not be able to leave unless he broke Llorona's ability or killed the woman.
Roxene did not doubt that she could do both, but doing so would require her to use a unique or Supreme Skill.
Part of this battle was to get used to fighting in her humanoid form to better utilize its unique capabilities.
Being a giant wolf had many advantages, but she knew that being able to seamlessly switch between her two forms and fight competently in both would be necessary to advance.
'Had I trained more, I could have used my humanoid form against that dragon. I know that I might have been able to dodge his attack better that way. But instead, I had to meet him at full size, power against power. And I know where that got me.'
Roxene was reflecting on her perceived mistakes when Llorona finally attacked.
Muddy shadows shaped like hands reached out of the mire below her and tried to drag her under.
With a flick of her hand, Roxene created a burst of light that destroyed the appendages, and she then rose up into the air a few meters to avoid the hazardous ground.
When she did though, the gnarly trees spread throughout the domain reacted.
Each one elongated towards her and their branches writhed around as they flew towards her.
Manipulating the glowing aura around her, Roxene created claws made out of light covering her hands and began tearing into branches with savage ferocity.
Purposefully, she made it seem like she was being overwhelmed and left her back vulnerable to attack.
As expected, Llorona took the bait and struck.
Her form had become even more terrifying than before, with the same gnarled shadows wood of the trees twisted around her unnatural proportions, and sludge-like shadows pouring out of her body.
Though she was typically unbothered by such things, having seen true horrors before, Roxene still felt a sense of disgust when looking the powerful Umbrashnul woman. There was something deeply unperverting about her.
Nevertheless, that did not keep Roxene from casting a spell called shine ring, the one she had tried to use earlier.
Everything around her was suddenly enveloped in a powerful burst of light, that even the haze around the mire had difficulty stopping.
It did not reach its full effective area before being snuffed out, but that was perfectly fine. Roxene had only used it to give herself an opening and blast away the branches attacking her.
"Quasar Blast."
Pointing her right arm at Llorona, Roxene unleashed a tier six light magic spell.
A thick beam of light shot out of her extended limb, and there was nothing in its path to slow it down.
