The Umbrashnul King did not expect a beam of light to suddenly hit him directly in the chest.
Marcus had lost his light magic and powerful light-based unique skill. That should have made his offensive abilities using the affinity negligible at best
Yet, despite not having the requisite skill anymore, he was still able to cast a light magic spell.
It hit hard, blasting a deep wound into the Umbrashnul King's chest.
The problem with being able to shrug off most attacks meant that he was too lax in defending himself sometime.
Now that Marcus had been downgraded from a major to only a minor threat, the Umbrashnul King had only paying attention to Marcus scythe that glowed with strong, but far weaker than before, light energy.
"Ugh!"
A grunt of pain was proof that the laser spell did some real damage, and Marcus was not going to let the opening he had just created go to waste.
Keeping the momentum going, he dashed after the Umbrashnul King as the man was blasted away and attacked like a savage beast.
Instead of trying to use light magic to conjure more spells that were equivalent to what were given by Mirrion's system, Marcus just wrapped the energy around himself and sent out periodic omnidirectional blasts.
In terms of mana expenditure for output, it was horribly inefficient. He was using enough power to cast a tier eight spell for the equivalent of a tier four or maybe five.
Still, his high intelligence stat meant that he had a lot of mana, and thankfully mana regeneration was not among one of his stolen skills. No doubt the Umbrashnul King already had the skill himself and figured it would be worthless to Marcus without magic circulation.
Attack after attack, Marcus brutalized his opponent without letting up for a second.
This was not how he normally. There was typically more technique to his strikes or at least rudimentary strategy involved.
Right now, however, he was just letting his instincts take over and fighting with as much ferocity as he could manage.
Naturally, the Umbrashnul King fought back, and he scored some heavy blows against Marcus as well.
Large gashes were torn out of his arms, holes were pieces through his torsos, one of his legs was cut off just below the knee, and at one point, the blade of his enemy's spear went right through the center of his head.
Each wound hurt a lot more than normal now that he lacked the dull pain skill. But he was good at fighting through agony. It still had not yet reached the heights of what he had experienced since starting his second life.
To combat the massive amount of damage he was taking, Marcus kept Spirit Healing going at a rate that would drain him completely of spiritual energy in just around twelve minutes.
At the same time, he was also casting healing magic spells again.
He still had the skill for that, and now that he had figured out how to use his mana on his own, it was only a bit harder and slower to cast than usual.
Of course, Marcus knew that he was burning himself out fast.
This battle was no longer one of a measured approach, but just two people trying to kill the other as quickly as possible.
Eventually, Marcus had the Umbrashnul King pinned down on the ground with his scythe slowly pushing back against the man's spear.
The entire time he was bursting with light energy that made him look the manifestation of a small star.
Shadows swirled around his adversary, but they were withering before the intense radiance Marcus was emitting.
It seemed that Marcus was closing in on victory, but just before his scythe jammed into the Umbrashnul King's head, the man fully abandoned defense to deliver fatal blow.
Marcus felt himself suddenly chopped in half at waist.
His opponent's spear had suddenly become malleable. Its blade had sprung forward seemingly on its own to slice through him.
He felt a searing pain from the wound, and he quickly realized that it was not the only one he had taken.
While the blade was passing through him, shadow spikes had erupted from it and pierced deep into his torso.
Cracks were starting to web their way through his physical body, and Marcus knew that he was reaching his limit.
Soon he would be forced back into only being a spiritual form and it would leave him heavily weakened.
Except, even as he was breaking apart, he had not given up yet.
His hands were still on his scythe, and he slashed down with every ounce of strength he could musters.
Naturally, his foe was shocked by the display of power Marcus brought to bear after being cut in half and his insides shredded.
It just was not normal for anything to be moving with such ferocity after taking so much damage. Though, that was often what other people thought when fighting Umbrashnuls. With their species being nearly unkillable. Now it was time for him to experience what it was like to fight such a foe.
Both Marcus and the Umbrashnul King yelled as they fought back against each other, but in the end, it was Marcus who won out.
His scythe into his opponent's head, and he did not stop there.
Like he had been cleaved in half, he did the same to the Umbrashnul King.
Yet instead of horizontally at the waist, his attack split the Umbrashnul King from his head to his groin.
Unsurprisingly, that still was not enough to kill the man, so Marcus drew out every last bit of mana he had in him and converted it into an explosion of light magic.
Once the blast of energy had ceased, all that was left was a giant crater and a collapsing chamber around Marcus.
His form was only seconds away from shattering, but he used his second to last charge of Ultimate Refresh to bring himself back to a perfect condition.
It was always strange to go from being so injured to normal in the span of a couple of seconds, but Marcus was not going to complain.
He had managed to win the fight, even if it had required him to get very reckless towards the end.
Unfortunately, he knew that it was not over yet.
No rush of experience had hit him, and when he opened his status, the stolen skills were still grayed out.
"He just had to take Deny Destruction." Marcus grumbled.
The lifesaving unique skill had still been on cooldown for him, but it seemed that when it was stolen, that had been reset for the Umbrashnul King.
Currently, the man must have been waiting in the same white void that Marcus had been to whenever he used the skill.
'I thought he would try to come back immediately to finish me off, but he's taking his time there. I suppose that he decided to strategize instead of jumping right back into the fight.'
Marcus started preparing himself, knowing that the second battle between them was going to be tougher than the first.
Honestly, he had gotten lucky to catch his adversary off guard with his conjured laser spell.
The surprise light magic had managed to inflict quite a bit of damage and give Marcus the opportunity to go all-out on attacking. And even then, he had only barely managed to win.
'He's also got Soul Burst that he can use. Once that's in effect, I won't be able to stand up against him. I've already got a plan for that though. I'll just have to stall him out.'
Marcus actually was hoping that his opponent would come back and immediately use the other stolen unique skill.
With Dark Portal and Light Speed Movement, Marcus was confident that he could keep away from the Umbrashnul King for three minutes.
After that, he would have no problems beating the guy when his stats were cut in half.
The full minute passed before the Umbrashnul King reappeared in the exact same spot where he had nearly died.
Obviously, Marcus had not remained idle, and there were what looked like floating mines made of light waiting to be triggered.
As soon as he saw any movement, he detonated the explosive light magic he had conjured and filled the already devastated area with more destruction.
Immediately, he knew that his sneak attack had failed to kill his target, but when everything settled, he saw that the man was already in rough shape.
Thankful things were going pretty well, Marcus prepared to fire off another burst of light when his enemy opened his mouth to speak.
"You truly are a powerful being unlike any other I have ever encounter. But that was your only chance to beat me. This battle is now mine to control."
Marcus really did not care what the man was saying and launched into another strike.
However, before he could get far, he suddenly felt a crushing pressure inside of his head.
"Identity Dissolution."
