Shane Thorne paused for a moment before continuing, "Allister’s grandmother hasn’t sent over so much as a single chicken. For the past two months, she hasn’t even provided living expenses. Phoebe risked her life to carry on your Chapman family line. And look how sturdy Allister is! He was a full eight jin when he was born, and now he’s twelve. He’s grown this big without his grandma contributing so much as a single chicken!"

As a former teacher, Shane Thorne enunciated every word perfectly. His voice wasn’t loud, but everyone in the room could hear him clearly. Old Mrs. Chapman, however, looked completely unfazed; she wasn’t scared in the least. But the expressions on Brian Chapman’s uncles’ faces turned sour.

They didn’t know the whole story. All they’d heard was Old Mrs. Chapman’s side: that Phoebe Thorne refused to settle down and live a proper life, insisting on running back to her parents’ house where she’d been for over half a year. She also supposedly spent money like water, to the point that Brian Chapman’s salary wasn’t enough to cover Phoebe’s personal expenses. That, according to her, was why they had cut her off.

Apparently, that wasn’t the full story at all.

"My Brian only makes thirty-eight yuan a month!" Old Mrs. Chapman shrieked viciously. "We give twenty of that to Phoebe Thorne, leaving just eighteen for our entire family! We’ve been living on air for the past six months, so where would we get the money to buy chickens?!"

’She had wanted to cut off the living expenses for a long time. If Phoebe had the guts to run back to her parents, she had no business spending her son’s money. As for grandsons, she already had one. She couldn’t care less about this new one; she wouldn’t have cared if he was born or not.’

"Phoebe isn’t in good health. She has gestational hypertension, which requires hospital check-ups and proper nutrition. Here," Shane Thorne said, "these are the hospital’s reports. To be honest, the twenty yuan you provide isn’t nearly enough. We’ve been covering the difference ourselves."

Shane Thorne placed a thick stack of medical records and test reports on the table. He had come prepared.

Brian Chapman’s uncles glanced over the medical records and reports, and their expressions soured even more. Old Mrs. Chapman had claimed that Phoebe Thorne had gone back to her family’s home out of sheer gluttony and laziness. Now they knew the old woman had been lying.

"You Chapmans have gone too far! My niece risked her life to continue your family line, and what do you do? You won’t even pay for her support! Do you think this is still the old society? Even back then, no one would mistreat a daughter-in-law like this!

We’re in a new society now! My niece comes from an upstanding poor-peasant family with an impeccable background. She’s thrifty and diligent, and she bore a son for your Chapman family. How has she wronged you? Brian Chapman, you tell me! On what grounds did you stop sending money for her support? Are you keeping a mistress on the side?"

Preston Thorne pointed a finger right at Brian Chapman’s nose as he yelled. He was there to play the bad cop, and he wasn’t holding back in the slightest.

With a guilty conscience, Brian Chapman flatly denied it. "N-No... Of course not."

"If you don’t have a mistress, then why did you stop sending living expenses? You don’t support your wife, you don’t support your child—are you even a man?!" Preston Thorne, looking like a fearsome, black-faced judge, berated Brian Chapman so harshly he didn’t dare talk back.

"My mother was sick a while ago! The hospital bills cost a lot of money. Brian’s salary wasn’t enough, so we four sisters had to pool our money to pay for it!" a woman declared loudly. She was Brian’s second-eldest sister, the daughter closest to Old Mrs. Chapman, and the Chapman family’s resident shit-stirrer.

"Sickness certainly needs to be treated. What illness does Allister’s grandma have? Is it serious?" Shane Thorne asked with an air of concern.

Old Mrs. Chapman shrieked, "I’m old and useless, my body is full of ailments. The doctor told me I need to rest and enjoy my remaining years, but I’m just not fated for such a comfortable life."

"You shouldn’t say that. Sickness must be treated. Which hospital did Allister’s grandma go to? What did the doctor say? Let me see the medical records. Perhaps I can offer some advice. I’m on medication year-round myself. Misery loves company, after all!"

Shane Thorne pressed relentlessly. ’This damn old hag has a face that’s glowing with health. What kind of bullshit illness is that? She can’t possibly fool me.’
