Old Mrs. Chapman and one of her daughters mumbled evasively. One moment, they claimed the medical records were missing; the next, they said she’d seen a folk healer who didn’t keep records. Not even a three-year-old would have believed their excuses.

"Even a folk healer would write a prescription. You can’t just grab random herbs—that’s how you kill someone," Shane Thorne scoffed. The Chapman uncles could no longer sit still.

They weren’t fools. They knew instantly that the old woman was lying. Besides, they hadn’t heard a word about her being sick lately. ’She’s just spouting nonsense,’ they thought. ’This is ridiculous.’

"I threw the prescription out! Who keeps such unlucky things around?" Old Mrs. Chapman gave up on making excuses and decided to just play dumb.

Goldie Thorne couldn’t suppress his rage any longer. He shot to his feet, ready to fight, but Frederick Thorne yanked him back down.

Preston Thorne was furious, too. He sneered, "Who do you think you’re fooling with that nonsense? A three-year-old? I’m looking at Allister’s grandma right now, and she’s the picture of health—full of energy, looking even better than my niece. Sounds more like a bad case of laziness to me!"

"A case of laziness? I am sick! My body aches so much I can’t even sleep, but I still have to toil away for this family! Oh, my bitter fate... Other people get a daughter-in-law so they can finally relax, but I brought one home only to suffer... What terrible deeds did I do in a past life... to be punished like this..."

Her lies exposed, the old woman plopped right down on the floor and started howling, crying about how hard her life was and what a wretched fate she had.

Shane Thorne shot Goldie Thorne and the others a look. Taking the hint, Goldie stormed up to the old woman and spat, "You damn old hag, you have the nerve to cry? If you hadn’t abused my sister, would she have developed high blood pressure? What kind of family makes a pregnant woman run around doing all the work while you sit on your ass and relax? And now you have the gall to turn around and slander her! You’re a venomous viper! Aren’t you afraid of retribution? I hope you die a miserable death!"

"You... You all heard that! The Thorne family are nothing but thugs and bandits, using their numbers to bully my family... I... I can’t live like this!" Old Mrs. Chapman’s wails grew louder, and she started flailing about dramatically.

Her four daughters rushed over, and the five of them—mother and daughters—began to wail in unison as if at a funeral. The sound was earth-shattering, loud enough to blow the roof off the house.

Tang Xiaonan covered her ears. ’Like mother, like daughters,’ she thought. ’All five of them are cut from the same cloth. I have no idea how Aunt Phoebe has managed to put up with this for all these years.’

She grabbed Amanda Chapman by the arm and slipped out of the room. It was just too loud inside.

"Amanda, did that old hag hit you?"

Amanda Chapman shook her head. "I’m fast. She couldn’t catch me."

She wasn’t stupid enough to just stand there and get hit. The real problem was the food at the Chapman house. It was awful, with no richness to it, and even the rice was rationed. While she was fine, her mother’s milk supply had noticeably diminished, and her baby brother was constantly crying from hunger.

Tang Xiaonan frowned. Amanda Chapman’s round little face, which had filled out while she was at the Thorne residence, had clearly thinned. ’Kids get chubby fast, but they lose weight just as quickly.’ Phoebe Thorne also looked much more haggard. ’The Chapmans really are scum.’

"Amanda, aren’t you eating well?"

Amanda Chapman’s eyes reddened as she nodded. "Dad refuses to give us money for food. Grandma is in charge of the groceries, and she’ll go three or four days without buying anything. We eat pickled vegetables every day, while she secretly eats good food by herself. Mom’s milk has completely dried up."

"Doesn’t Uncle feel bad for Allister?" Tang Xiaonan was furious. ’That man is worse than an animal.’

Amanda Chapman sneered. "All he cares about right now is that vixen. Why would he spare a thought for Allister?"

Suddenly, blood-curdling screams erupted from inside the house. It was Old Mrs. Chapman and her four daughters, shrieking as if they were being murdered. Amanda Chapman immediately pulled Tang Xiaonan over to peek through the crack in the door. Inside, Goldie Thorne had hauled Brian Chapman up with one hand. A few punches was all it took to beat the bastard’s face to a pulp. The Chapman uncles didn’t intervene, though their expressions were grim.
