Transmigrated into a Grandpa, Embracing the Laid-Back Life
Chapter 539: Pill FiendThe moment they passed through the light curtain, a dense spiritual energy so thick it seemed almost tangible wrapped around the entire airship.
Shadow stood on Su Ming’s shoulder, sensing that familiar spiritual energy, and excitedly spread her wings.
"Cheep—!"
She let out an extraordinarily clear, long cry, then like a streak of black lightning left Su Ming’s shoulder and circled broadly above the airship. Her jet-black feathers reflected a metallic sheen in the setting sun.
Qingfeng and Mingyue hurried up from the stern as well.
They stood at the rail, looking down at the familiar stone steps of the mountain gate, at the fellow disciples in gray or green robes moving along the mountain path. Both of them could not hide the relief and smiles spreading across their faces.
"At least we made it back alive." Qingfeng exhaled deeply and dramatically patted his chest. "I swear, unless I form my Core, I will never set foot in that damned Central Continent again."
Mingyue nodded vigorously, sharing his sentiment.
The airship passed over the outer sect's peaks and descended steadily toward the huge stone platform in front of Formation Peak’s mountain gate.
Master Xuanming was the first to disembark.
He did not look back or exchange any polite words. With a casual gesture, the massive ebony airship shrank to the size of a palm and became a streak of black light that flew into his sleeve.
"Go rest on your own."
Master Xuanming tossed out that cold sentence, never even glancing at the three juniors, then strode off briskly toward the Purple Bamboo Sea, his gray Daoist robe soon disappearing around the bend in the mountain path.
Su Ming bowed deeply in the direction of Master Xuanming’s departing figure.
Qingfeng and Mingyue hurriedly followed suit with their own bows.
Once Master Xuanming’s silhouette was gone, Qingfeng turned to Su Ming, his carefree grin returning.
He stepped forward and slapped Su Ming’s shoulder hard.
"Su Ming, thanks for looking out for us during this trip to the Central Continent." Qingfeng’s usual frivolity fell away; his tone grew surprisingly earnest.
Su Ming smiled faintly. "Fellow disciples watch out for each other. It’s only right."
"Cut the formalities." Qingfeng grinned, wiggling his thumb at his chest. "Remember, once I form my Core, I’ll read your fortune for free! I promise it’ll be more accurate than this trip!"
Mingyue could not bear it any longer. Blushing, she grabbed Qingfeng’s sleeve and yanked him away.
"Senior Brother, don’t embarrass yourself." Mingyue tugged and glanced back at Su Ming with an apologetic smile. "Su Ming, get some rest soon. We’re heading off now."
Su Ming waved at them with a smile, watching them bicker and walk away until the surroundings fell utterly quiet.
His smile slowly faded, returning to that demeanor as calm and unreadable as an ancient well.
He did not immediately go to Star Pivot Hall to report. Instead he turned and followed the familiar path toward his cave dwelling on Gazing Star Cliff, at the edge of Formation Peak.
Back at the cave entrance.
Su Ming did not rush inside. He stood before the stone gate, closed his eyes, and spread his divine sense like an extremely fine spiderweb, checking each of the alert formations he had left before departing.
"The Spirit-Lock Formation intact. The Flowing Wind Shadowing Array shows two extremely faint contact traces on the edge, probably from mountain beasts. The core self-destruct node was not triggered."
Su Ming tallied everything silently in his mind.
Only after confirming there were no signs of any intruders had entered his cave did he take the True Disciple jade token from his storage pouch and wave it gently before the stone gate.
"Rumble—"
The heavy stone gate slid slowly open to both sides.
Su Ming stepped in, closed the stone gate behind him with a reverse motion, and immediately activated the highest-level isolation array.
As the formation’s light flared, the cave dwelling became entirely sealed off from the outside world.
Su Ming exhaled long and slow, then walked to the stone bed and sat cross-legged.
Shadow flew with practiced ease to a recess on the stone wall—a tiny spirit-herb nest Su Ming had specially prepared for her. She curled into a ball, closed her eyes, and began digesting the spiritual energy she had absorbed along the way.
A faint azure glow brightened the air.
Lin Yu’s soul body slowly manifested opposite the stone bed.
"You’re back." Lin Yu glanced at the familiar furnishings with a tone that carried a subtle, scarcely noticeable steadiness.
"Back," Su Ming nodded.
"Don’t get happy too soon." Lin Yu bluntly doused him with cold water. The soul body hovered slightly in the air. "The herbs are complete, but the real difficulty is only just beginning."
"Master, you mean the pill-refining process?" Su Ming asked.
"Obviously." Lin Yu snorted. "What grade is the Heaven-Mending Pill? That is something that defies heaven and fate! When such a pill completes, it will attract the heavens' rejection."
Lin Yu leaned forward slightly, his gaze sternly fixed on Su Ming.
"This rejection is called a Pill Fiend in the cultivation world." Lin Yu’s voice dropped. "It’s not a thunder tribulation. It’s a pernicious qi of heaven and earth that targets both the alchemist and the pill itself. One slip and not only will the pill be ruined and the alchemist die, the entire furnace can be blown to ashes."
Su Ming tightened his hands slightly on his knees.
If a Pill Fiend erupted, the alchemist would be overwhelmed. As the pill owner, he would inevitably suffer serious backlash. With his current mid-stage Foundation Establishment cultivation, what were his chances of survival against that level of recoil?
"Since Master sent you to gather the herbs, he must have considered the Pill Fiend issue." Su Ming finished his calculations inwardly and looked up at Lin Yu. "He surely arranged a proper alchemist and contingency measures."
"You’d better pray he arranged things well enough." Lin Yu gave a noncommittal sneer.
Su Ming rose and put on the purple robe that signified a Formation Peak True Disciple of the Cloud Hidden Sect. Under the night pearls’ glow, the purple fabric emitted a restrained spiritual radiance.
"Time to report." Su Ming said softly.
Lin Yu’s soul body dissolved into a streak of azure light and faded back into the Xuantian ring.
Su Ming turned, pushed open the stone gate, and strode off toward Star Pivot Hall.
