Transmigration: I Made A Deal With A Man in Yellow
Chapter 101: A dark past [6]It all started on one particular night when I found myself watching Elfriede again.
Elfriede was sleeping peacefully in her bed, wrapped comfortably beneath her blankets. For several minutes, absolutely nothing happened, which made me wonder why I was suddenly being shown a memory of her sleeping.
It was weird.
But there was always a reason for these memories.
Everything seemed normal until Elfriede suddenly shifted beneath her blankets. She rolled onto her side, then onto her back before turning again. Her already pale skin became even paler, and beads of sweat began forming across her forehead.
More importantly, she started talking in her sleep.
"No... no..." she muttered worriedly as she tossed from side to side. "Lily... give... her back..."
I frowned.
She was having a nightmare.
It wasn’t exactly strange for someone her age to have nightmares. She was only around fourteen, after all. There was no reason to judge a kid who was still wet behind the ears for being frightened by a bad dream.
But her nightmare seemed to be about Liliane.
And that caught my attention.
Especially considering Liliane was the one person I was most worried about right now.
I walked closer to the bed and stared down at Elfriede.
"Please..." Tears began leaking from the corners of her closed eyes. "Don’t do this..."
Her voice sounded so desperate that if I hadn’t known better, I would’ve thought she was awake.
I watched silently.
As the minutes passed, Elfriede gradually became calmer. Her body stopped moving beneath the blankets, her breathing returned to normal, and eventually, the tears stopped falling.
She became completely still again.
"Uh... that’s it?"
I raised an eyebrow.
"I thought this was supposed to be an important mem—"
"LILY!"
"Blood of Jesus!"
I jumped backward in fright and immediately placed a hand against my chest.
What the hell?!
Why did this kid suddenly scream like that? Was she trying to give me a heart attack?
I mentally threw several curses at her. I didn’t care if she was a kid or not—she had almost killed me.
After realizing how ridiculous I probably looked, I quickly recomposed myself and straightened my posture.
"That was unsightly of me. Why would I be scared of something like that?"
I shook my head and looked toward Elfriede again.
She was sitting upright now.
Her chest rose and fell rapidly as she struggled to catch her breath. Sweat covered her face, and the back of her pajamas was completely soaked.
"I... I have to find Lily."
Elfriede threw the blankets away and jumped out of bed so quickly that her legs tangled together.
Thud!
She fell onto her knees.
"Ouch..."
She didn’t even stop to complain.
Elfriede immediately pushed herself back onto her feet, grabbed the training sword beside her bed, and stormed out of the room without even putting on her shoes.
"Oh? Where are you going?"
Obviously, she couldn’t hear me.
Since I didn’t want to miss whatever was about to happen, I quickly followed her.
Elfriede ran through the wooden corridors before taking a sharp turn to the left. Since I was much faster than her, keeping up wasn’t a problem, although I had to admit she was moving surprisingly fast for someone who had just woken up.
Eventually, she came to an abrupt stop in front of an open door.
Liliane’s room.
Each child had their own bedroom instead of sharing with someone else. That explained why Elfriede had needed to run all the way here. Even though Liliane and Yuria were her sisters, their rooms were located in different parts of the girls’ sleeping quarters.
But the moment we reached Liliane’s doorway, I noticed something was wrong.
The smell.
It was disgusting.
Not an actual physical smell, but something I could somehow sense. A foul presence hung heavily in the air, filled with so much negativity that I immediately understood what it was.
Demonic energy.
This was my first time actually experiencing it, and technically this was only a memory, yet I recognized it almost instinctively.
There was nothing more vile than demonic energy.
It corrupted the mind and fed on the worst parts of a person—their fear, hatred, anger, jealousy, and despair. Once it found something it could use, it whispered into that person’s mind and slowly pulled them deeper.
This era was a time when demons were still active in the world before eventually disappearing into hiding.
Humans didn’t only have man-eating monsters to worry about.
They had to worry about themselves.
Their own emotions could be used against them if they weren’t careful, especially when that sweet voice began whispering promises into their ears.
When Elfriede stepped into the room, we were met with complete destruction.
The bed had been broken apart. The study table was overturned and split, while the wardrobe looked as though something had smashed through it. Shards of glass covered the wooden floor beneath a broken window.
And the demonic energy inside was far stronger.
Elfriede immediately covered her mouth and nose with her arm.
Her face twisted in disgust.
I stared at her in surprise.
"Oh? You can sense it?"
I had expected her to collapse.
Whatever demon had been lurking around Liliane wasn’t weak. The amount of demonic energy left inside this room alone was enough to make that obvious.
Yet Elfriede merely looked disgusted by it.
So not only had Sister Friede possessed ridiculous physical strength before even Awakening, but apparently she had also possessed a natural resistance toward demonic energy.
"Liliane?"
Elfriede looked around the destroyed room.
"Liliane! Where are you?!"
No answer.
She checked beside the bed, behind what remained of the wardrobe, and even looked through the broken window.
Nothing.
Liliane wasn’t here.
"She’s gone..." I muttered.
Then I noticed something Elfriede couldn’t.
A faint trail of demonic energy stretched from the room and continued down the corridor in the opposite direction from where we had come.
My eyes followed it.
Whatever had happened here, Liliane had left afterward.
Elfriede seemed to reach the same conclusion without seeing the trail. She turned and rushed toward the doorway.
Then—
"KIAAAAAAAAH!"
A scream echoed through the corridors.
Both of us froze.
It had come from the southern side of the girls’ sleeping quarters.
I slowly turned toward the direction of the scream.
"Well, speak of the devil."
My expression became serious.
"I think we found our suspect."
"Liliane!"
Elfriede’s eyes widened.
She immediately ran toward the scream.
And damn, she was moving even faster now.
Her bare feet struck the wooden floor repeatedly as she sprinted through the corridor, making the old boards groan beneath her. Her training sword was held tightly in one hand while the other helped her maintain balance as she took the corners without slowing down.
Something else bothered me, though.
Nobody came outside.
A scream that loud should’ve woken half the building, yet none of the other children opened their doors.
There weren’t any knights patrolling the corridors either.
That couldn’t be a coincidence.
"Kyaaaaaah! Help!"
Another scream.
Closer this time.
Elfriede’s grip tightened around her sword.
"Hold on!"
She accelerated again.
We turned sharply around another corner and finally saw it.
One of the doors farther down the corridor was wide open.
The trail of demonic energy led directly inside.
"That’s the place."
Elfriede ran toward it.
But the moment she reached the doorway...she stopped completely.
Her pupils dilated
Her entire body began trembling, and the training sword shook violently in her hand. Sweat rolled down the side of her face as she stared into the room.
Crunch.
I stopped beside her.
And immediately understood her reaction.
Because I could see it too.
Something no fourteen-year-old should ever have to see.
Crunch.
A few meters away from us, someone was crouched over a body.
Liliane.
At least, I thought it was Liliane.
Her back was facing us, and her pale silver hair fell messily around her shoulders. Blood covered her clothes and hands as she crouched over someone lying motionless beneath her.
Crunch. Crunch.
Elfriede couldn’t move.
"L... Lily?"
The sound stopped.
Silence filled the room.
Liliane slowly turned her head.
Her amethyst eyes were gone.
In their place were two glowing red eyes with narrow, slit-like pupils.
"Ah... Sister."
Liliane smiled.
"What are you doing here?"
Elfriede’s sword nearly slipped from her trembling hand.
Crimson blood covered Liliane’s mouth and chin. Her teeth, which had once been completely normal, were now unnaturally sharp and stained red.
But what caught my attention was her right hand.
She was holding something.
Something wet.
Something red.
A heart.
Or rather, what remained of one.
My gaze slowly moved downward.
The body beneath her belonged to Sena.
Her chest had been torn open.
Blood covered the floor beneath her, and the empty cavity where her heart should’ve been was clearly visible. Her blonde hair was stained crimson, while her lifeless eyes remained wide open, frozen in whatever terror she had experienced during her final moments.
I looked back at Liliane.
The demonic energy around her was no longer faint.
It covered her entire body.
"Ah, shit..."
Now everything made sense.
Her sudden change in personality.
Her unnatural improvement.
The hatred I had seen in her eyes.
The demonic energy that had been following her.
I had been right about a demon influencing her.
But I had underestimated how far things had already gone.
Liliane hadn’t simply accepted power from a demon.
She had been possessed by one.
