Transmigration: I Made A Deal With A Man in Yellow
Chapter 102: A dark past [7]I looked at the possessed Liliane with a deep frown.
I had been expecting something like this.
Once a demon began lurking around someone, possession was always a possibility. And Liliane had been an easy target. She was still a child, so her mental barriers weren’t exactly strong, and all the fear, frustration, and hatred she had been holding inside only made things worse.
Especially her hatred toward Sena.
The same Sena she had now killed.
Rest in peace.
All those negative emotions were basically an open door for a demon. All it had to do was walk through.
"You didn’t answer me."
Liliane’s voice pulled my attention back to her.
She tilted her head slightly, that warm smile never leaving her blood-covered face.
"What brought you here... Sister?"
Bad-thump!
Bad-thump!
The night was so quiet that I could hear Elfriede’s heartbeat.
She hadn’t moved from the doorway.
Her entire body was frozen, and her training sword trembled slightly in her hand. She was terrified, and honestly, I couldn’t blame her.
It wasn’t every day that you walked into a room and found your own little sister possessed by what was basically an incarnation of the devil.
And that same sister had been eating someone’s heart only moments ago.
Disgusting.
"L-Liliane..." Elfriede finally managed to speak. "What... what have you done?"
Her eyes slowly moved away from her sister and toward Sena’s body.
Then she finally saw everything—the blood, the torn clothes and the gaping hole where Sena’s heart should’ve been.
Elfriede’s eyes widened in horror.
Her face immediately went pale, and before she could stop herself, she bent forward.
"Ugh!"
She vomited onto the floor.
Liliane raised an eyebrow, seemingly confused by her sister’s reaction. Then she followed Elfriede’s gaze toward the corpse beneath her.
"Oh."
She looked back at Elfriede.
"You mean this bitch?"
A smile returned to her face.
"She got what she deserved." Liliane glanced at the corpse before casually looking back at her sister. "Oh, and sorry for making you see something so unsightly."
Drip.
Drip.
Blood slowly fell from the remains of the heart in her hand.
Elfriede wiped her mouth with a trembling arm and forced herself upright.
"She didn’t deserve that!"
Her voice cracked.
"Why... why did you kill her?!"
Tears began running down her cheeks.
The smile on Liliane’s face disappeared.
A frown replaced it.
"What kind of question is that?" Disdain entered her voice. "Don’t you remember how she treated me?"
Elfriede didn’t answer.
"She called me weak because I didn’t want to hurt anyone. She mocked me because I was afraid to fight." Liliane’s fingers slowly tightened around the remains of the heart. "But did anyone ever ask if I wanted to fight?"
Her voice grew louder.
"I never wanted any of this!"
Moonlight entered through the broken window and fell across Liliane’s body. It illuminated the blood covering her clothes and the red eyes staring at her sister.
"If our world wasn’t so accursed, we wouldn’t have to fight for our lives every day! We’re children, Sister! We’re supposed to enjoy our lives. We’re supposed to play, laugh, and worry about stupid things!"
Her expression twisted with anger.
"Not train to become soldiers!"
Elfriede tightened her grip around the hilt of her sword.
"But... you know we don’t have a choice," she said through her tears. "If we want to survive, we have to learn how to protect ourselves. Everything they teach us here is meant to prepare us for what’s outside. It’s... it’s what’s best for us."
Thud.
Liliane dropped what remained of Sena’s heart.
It landed wetly on the floor between them.
Then she started clapping.
Clap! Clap! Clap!
"Bravo."
Elfriede flinched.
Liliane smiled again, but there was no warmth behind it this time.
"You really are my big sister. Always deciding what’s best for us."
"Liliane, that’s not what I—"
"I never wanted to be here!"
Her voice echoed through the room.
Elfriede went silent.
"I never wanted to fight. I never wanted to hold a sword. I never wanted to kill monsters." Liliane pointed toward herself. "All I wanted was to live peacefully with you and Yuria. Was that really too much to ask?"
Her breathing became heavier.
"What kind of place that’s supposedly ’best for us’ trains children so they can send them onto a battlefield?"
Elfriede opened her mouth, but no words came out.
"We’re children!" Liliane shouted. "And yet we’re the ones being prepared to fight those abominations while the adults stand back and watch us!"
"That isn’t—"
"Haven’t you noticed?"
Elfriede froze.
Liliane’s voice suddenly became quieter.
"The older children."
The room fell silent.
"Haven’t you noticed how some of them leave... and never come back?"
Elfriede’s grip around her sword loosened slightly.
"They’re gone, Sister."
Liliane stared directly into her eyes.
"Dead."
Elfriede’s lips trembled.
"They send us out there because they want us to Awaken some stupid power that we don’t even know is real. And how many of us have to die trying?"
The more Liliane spoke, the more tears fell down Elfriede’s face.
I remained silent.
This was the dangerous part.
Because beneath the demonic influence and all the hatred twisting Liliane’s thoughts...
Some of what she was saying wasn’t completely wrong.
They were children.
They were being trained brutally.
And some of them clearly weren’t coming back.
That was probably exactly what the demon had used to reach her.
It didn’t need to create Liliane’s fears from nothing.
It only needed to take fears that were already there and twist them until they became something much worse.
"So no."
Liliane wiped some blood from her mouth with the back of her hand.
"I’m tired."
She looked down at Sena’s corpse before stepping away from it.
"And I’m leaving this place."
"Lily..."
"I used to be weak."
Liliane slowly raised her hand.
Her fingers curled into a fist.
Dark red energy began gathering around it.
The aura crawled over her skin like smoke, twisting around her arm as the demonic presence inside the room grew heavier.
Elfriede instinctively stepped backward.
Liliane stared at the power surrounding her fist.
Then she smiled.
"But I’m not weak anymore."
The dark red aura grew stronger.
"I don’t need to fight those monsters just to Awaken some power that might not even exist."
Her glowing red eyes lifted toward Elfriede.
"Not when I already have this."
"No, Lily."
Elfriede took a cautious step forward, even though the sword in her hand was still trembling.
"Whatever that power is... it’s not good."
"Hah? Not good?"
Liliane looked genuinely offended.
"I was able to overpower this bitch in seconds."
She suddenly kicked Sena’s corpse.
Thud!
The body rolled across the blood-covered floor before slamming against the wall.
Elfriede flinched.
Liliane pointed toward Sena’s motionless body.
"She was always stronger than me. Always looking down on me. Always calling me weak." The dark red energy around Liliane’s hand grew stronger. "And now look at her."
Her bloody smile widened.
"So tell me again that this isn’t power."
Elfriede shook her head repeatedly.
"What kind of power demands that you kill one of your own?" she asked. "I saw it in my dreams, Lily. I saw what it was doing to you. Whatever gave you this power is evil. You have to let it go."
"Evil?"
Liliane’s expression changed immediately.
"My new friend isn’t evil."
I raised an eyebrow.
Her friend?
"Your... friend?" Elfriede asked, equally confused.
"Yes."
Liliane looked almost offended that Elfriede would question it.
"He’s the one who gave me this power when I needed help. He was there when I needed someone the most..." Her red eyes narrowed. "When you weren’t."
Elfriede’s eyes widened.
"No, I—"
"So don’t call him evil."
Elfriede fell silent.
Watching the interaction, I couldn’t help but shake my head.
Friends with a demon?
Yeah, right.
You could never truly be friends with one.
The demons in my book weren’t like those demons you’d see in some cartoons where one turned out to be friendly and everyone had simply misunderstood them.
No.
These things were among the most wretched and cruel beings in existence.
They didn’t care about friendship.
They didn’t care about love.
And they definitely didn’t give people power out of the kindness of their hearts.
If a demon offered you something, it was because it wanted something in return
