Elfriede tightened her grip around her sword.

"If he’s really your friend, and he’s really not evil..." Her voice trembled. "Then why is he telling you to eat another human being’s heart?!"

Liliane’s smile weakened slightly.

"That’s... that’s something only a demon would make you do!"

"I was scared at first."

Elfriede froze.

Liliane looked down at the blood covering her hands.

"When I killed the first one, I was terrified. I almost threw up when I ate the heart."

My expression slowly changed.

The first one?

"But after the second and third..." Liliane looked back up.

Her sharp teeth glistened with blood beneath the moonlight.

"I wasn’t scared anymore."

Elfriede’s face went completely pale.

"W-What?"

Her sword lowered slightly.

"You... killed other people?"

Ah.

Now things were starting to make sense.

"Of course." Liliane smiled. "My power grows every time I eat a human heart. They tasted disgusting at first, but..."

She shrugged.

"I got used to the taste."

I stared at her.

So that explained the faint smell of blood that had constantly followed her throughout the memories.

And those missing children...

"Ah... ah..."

Elfriede seemed to reach the same conclusion.

Her whole body began trembling again, and she slowly covered her mouth with her free hand.

"The children who disappeared..."

Liliane tilted her head.

"Was it you?" Elfriede whispered.

Liliane smiled.

"Bingo."

Oh, fuck.

This was exactly why you didn’t mess with demons.

You never knew what kind of twisted things they would convince you to do in exchange for power. First, it was probably something small. Something Liliane could justify to herself.

Then came the first murder.

Then another.

And eventually, eating human hearts had become something she could talk about with a smile.

This was disgusting.

If my current body had actually been here, I probably would’ve thrown up beside Elfriede.

"Now, Sister..."

Liliane began walking toward her.

Her boots stepped through Sena’s blood, leaving dark red footprints behind with every step.

"I don’t want you to die on that battlefield."

Elfriede immediately stepped backward.

"So join me."

Liliane extended her hand.

"My friend told me he can give you power too. The same kind of power he gave me."

"No..."

"Just imagine how strong you’d become." Liliane’s smile grew. "You’ve always been the strongest out of all of us. If this power made me this strong, imagine what it could do for you."

Elfriede continued retreating.

Liliane continued approaching.

"And then we’ll go to Yuria. We’ll ask her to join us too."

She stretched her hand farther toward Elfriede.

"The three of us can leave this place together. We won’t have to train anymore. We won’t have to fight those creatures. Nobody will send us onto some battlefield to die."

For the briefest moment, Liliane sounded like the little girl from the earlier memories again.

"We can finally live together peacefully."

Elfriede’s back touched the wall.

There was nowhere else for her to retreat.

"I-I don’t want to."

Liliane stopped.

Her smile slowly disappeared.

"Tsk. Please, Sister." She clicked her tongue. "Don’t make this difficult for me."

Dark red energy crawled farther up her arm.

"I don’t want to hurt you."

Elfriede’s eyes moved toward the aura.

"But if you refuse..."

Liliane took another step.

"I’ll have to force you."

"No!"

Elfriede immediately raised her training sword and pointed it toward Liliane.

"Stay away from me!"

Liliane stopped.

Elfriede’s hands were trembling so badly that the tip of the sword couldn’t remain still.

"Lily, please... just stay away."

Liliane stared at her.

Elfriede’s breathing became uneven as tears continued falling down her cheeks. She looked terrified, but beneath that fear, something else was beginning to appear.

Anger.

"No..."

Her fingers tightened around the hilt.

"You’re not my sister."

Liliane’s expression went blank.

The room suddenly became quiet.

Even the smile disappeared from her face.

"What did you say?"

Elfriede swallowed.

Her entire body was still trembling, but she didn’t lower her sword.

"Y-you’re not my sister."

Liliane’s red eyes narrowed.

"The Lily I know would never do this!"

Liliane remained silent, and she simply stared at Elfriede with those red eyes, their vertical pupils fixed on her without blinking.

The warmth she had shown Elfriede only moments ago disappeared like it had never existed. The smile vanished from her blood-covered lips, and her expression became completely cold.

"Since you say I’m no longer your sister..." Liliane spoke quietly. "Then I’ll just have to kill you."

Elfriede’s face went pale.

"Yuria will probably understand me."

The moment those words left her mouth, Liliane moved.

She crossed the distance between them in the blink of an eye.

Her arm shot forward, fingers straightened like a blade as she aimed directly for the left side of Elfriede’s chest—towards her heart.

Goddamn it.

To me, the attack looked ridiculously slow.

Of course, that was only because I was much stronger than the current Liliane. Compared to the opponents I had recently fought, her movements might as well have been those of a slug.

But Elfriede wasn’t me.

She was caught completely off guard.

Her little sister had just admitted to murdering several children, eating their hearts, and being given power by a demon. Then, barely a few seconds after Elfriede rejected her, that same sister had decided to kill her.

Anyone would be in shock.

And because of that, Elfriede wasn’t moving.

Liliane’s fingers drew closer to her chest.

I frowned.

What in the haberdasheries and hemoglobin?

Girl move!

Liliane’s hand was only a short distance away now, and Elfriede still stood there.

My eyes quickly moved toward the doorway.

Nobody.

I couldn’t sense anyone approaching either.

No knights.

No instructors.

Not even one of the other children.

That didn’t make sense.

Elfriede obviously survived this night. I had literally fought her tens of thousands of years later, so she clearly wasn’t going to die here.

But if nobody was coming to save her...

Then how did she survive?

Liliane’s fingers were now inches away from Elfriede’s chest.

I stared at her in frustration.

"Why can’t you just move to the left? You’ll die."

Elfriede’s eyes suddenly widened.

Then she moved.

She threw herself to the left.

BAM!

Liliane’s hand missed her chest and sank deep into the wooden wall behind her instead.

I blinked.

"Ah."

So she managed to dodge at the last second.

That made sense.

For a moment, Liliane didn’t move.

Her hand remained buried inside the wall as her eyes widened slightly, seemingly surprised that Elfriede had managed to avoid her attack.

Then a smile slowly returned to her lips.

"You dodged that..."

Elfriede had fallen onto the floor after desperately throwing herself aside. She quickly pushed herself back onto her feet, still breathing heavily.

Liliane turned her head toward her.

"As expected of my sister."

Her smile widened, revealing those bloodstained sharp teeth.

"You won’t go down without a fight after all."

Elfriede raised her training sword.

Her hands were trembling.

Tears continued running down her cheeks as she pointed the weapon toward the person she had spent most of her life protecting.

"Please..." Her voice cracked. "I don’t want to fight you."

Liliane stared at her for a moment.

"You’ll have to."

She pulled her hand free from the wall, causing pieces of broken wood to fall onto the floor.

Then she reached toward her waist.

Shing.

Her rapier slowly slid from its sheath.

Liliane lowered herself into a fighting stance, pointing the tip of the rapier toward Elfriede.

The two sisters stared at each other from opposite sides of the room.

Liliane’s red eyes narrowed.

"Or you will die."
