Looking at my Story System, I could see that it had changed quite a lot over the past month.
The fruits of my hard work, I guess.
First was my Overall Rank. I had broken through to the next Subrank, which wasn’t much of a surprise. Even before fighting Sister Friede, the Soul Fragments inside my core had already been close to reaching the required amount. Killing her had simply given me the final push I needed.
I could definitely feel that I had become stronger. My body felt lighter, my senses were sharper, and the mana flowing through me felt slightly denser than before. However, the difference wasn’t anything crazy. Breaking through a Subrank couldn’t be compared to advancing to an entirely new Overall Rank.
What caught my attention instead was the requirement for my next breakthrough.
"Five hundred Soul Fragments..."
Damn.
That was quite the jump.
At this rate, it could take me a year or even longer to reach the next Subrank if I progressed normally. Obviously, I wasn’t planning on waiting that long. I would have to find a way to gather Soul Fragments much faster, especially once I entered the academy.
I pushed that problem aside for now and moved my attention toward my Story Ranks.
Since one of my Stories had ranked up, the maximum number of Story Fragments required for the next advancement had increased as well. Looking at the new requirement made my face twitch slightly.
That was... quite a lot.
I needed to start increasing those numbers as soon as possible. The last thing I wanted was to eventually reach the peak of my current Overall Rank only to find myself unable to advance because my Story Rank was too low.
That was one of the most important rules of the Story System.
Your Overall Rank couldn’t advance beyond what your Story Rank allowed.
For example, I had been able to ascend to the Ascendant Overall Rank because my Stories had already reached the minimum required Story Rank: Awakened. However, if I wanted to eventually advance from Ascendant to Exalted, then at least the required Story Rank needed to reach Ascendant first.
Otherwise, no matter how many Soul Fragments I gathered, I would remain stuck.
That was why so many Awakeners eventually reached a wall in their progression. Their bodies, souls, and mana might’ve been ready for advancement, but their Stories weren’t. They hadn’t gathered enough Story Fragments to reach the minimum requirement for their next Overall Rank.
After all, the stronger your Story became, the stronger you became.
For that reason, most experienced Awakeners advised people to prioritize Story Fragments whenever possible instead of blindly hunting for Soul Fragments. Soul Fragments strengthened the foundation, but without a sufficiently powerful Story, there was only so far that foundation could take you.
Fortunately, that wasn’t something I needed to worry about immediately.
I still had two Subranks left to break through before reaching the limit of my current Overall Rank, and considering that the next one alone required five hundred Soul Fragments, that would probably take quite some time.
At this rate, I might only become Exalted after entering the academy.
Well, that was a problem for future Yves not the current Yves.
So yeah guys, remember to always leave things for tomorrow so you don’t stress yourself today.
I was about to move on and finally check the Gift I had received when something in the second Main Story entry caught my attention.
I froze.
Then I leaned closer to the interface, wondering if I had somehow read the number incorrectly.
40 Story Fragments.
"...Huh?"
I blinked.
The number remained the same.
Forty.
My eyebrows slowly knitted together.
"Where the hell did those come from?"
I knew exactly how many Story Fragments I had before entering the ruins, and unless I had somehow forgotten how to count, there was no way I should’ve gained this many.
Especially not for my second Main Story.
I stared at the number for several seconds, trying to think back through everything that had happened inside that place.
From the very beginning, since I saw this story, I found it strange, and wondered how I would gather its own story fragments because I didn’t know what kind of monsters I had to kill because it didn’t have any description at all. Even its name was blocked by those weird square boxes.
So I had been genuinely clueless on how to rank it up, and now...40 fragments have appeared out of nowhere.
"Wait a minute..." I murmured as I thought of something.
Was this perhaps because of that message I got before I entered Sister Friede’s memory?
It spoke about the main story activating its authority, and then at the end of the memory it deactivated it.
I looked again at the 40 fragments again.
So these fragments could have come from me experiencing the memory, perhaps?
Honestly it didn’t make any sense because it ignored all the rules I had set up for this world.
One could only get soul fragments by slaying a being related to that story or by challenging a story rift. There was no other way because I made it so.
But then at the same time it also made sense because I wouldn’t be shown that memory without any reason.
And more importantly, something I was forgetting is that this book is not the same as the one I wrote in the first place.
Things have been changed by who I assumed to be the man in yellow, so it was foolish of me again to try to rely on the rules that I had made for this world.
I crossed my arms over my chest, and tapped my left arm with my index finger.
So to what I’ve understood, this second main story has something to do with memories. Specifically with memories of those I slay.
After all, the authority only got triggered when I killed Sister Friede.
But my question was...did it work on everyone?
When I killed those knights back at the mansion, the system didn’t react at all other than confirming the kills. Therefore, it was safe to assume that it only activated for specific people or when exact conditions are met.
What would those conditions be?
I don’t know, so don’t ask me.
I had a hunch on what it could be, but that was something the future me would have to worry about.
And yes, now moving to my new gift!
[Shadow Step]
Holy shit. Is this for real? I mean, I had expected something similar since my powers were related to shadows as well but damn, Shadow Step?
This changes everything!
I was now feeling like someone who gambled for the first time and won million dollars in the casino with nothing but straight luck.
Gift: [Shadow Step]
Gift Description: [You are able to travel through the shadows of any living being or object. However, be careful how far you travel. If you venture too deep, you may enter the Abyss and never return.]
The description explained that it was really the real deal and that I was not mistaken, I could in fact now be able to travel through shadows just like Ezio.
However, that warning at the end made me feel a bit cautious of the ability. What did it mean by it may lead me to the abyss and that I may never return.
What kind of treacherous and ominous description was that?
If the abyss it was talking about was the abyss that I’m thinking about then this gift was a dangerous thing.
But nah...it couldn’t be. Why would something like that tied to such a gift?
So I ignored it for now, but I was still cautious.
"Hehehe." A big smile formed on my face that almost reached my eyes.
"What are you laughing at, did you get something good?" Ezio, who was standing, gave me a weird look.
"Yes, but can you guess what it is?"
"Uhh, your powers are related to darkness so maybe something like a Darkness Cloak that helps you hide your presence?" Ezio said as he touched his chin with his hand.
"Nah, but a darkness clock would be a really good gift, good for being sneaky and preparing ambushes." I nodded at his words.
"Then what is it?"
"Let me show you."
I stood up and cleaned the dust off my butt.
"Shadow Step." I said before my body got pulled into the shadows and disappeared from Ezio’s sight.
"No fucking way." Ezio said with widened eyes.
"Yes way." I said.
"That’s fucking cheating!" Ezio raised both hands up in complaint.
