I cleaned the blood off my blade and sheathed it.

I knelt down and said a short prayer for them, then I left — towards the church.

Once I was out of the ruins and got near the church, I felt two strong presences for the first time in this dead place.

I walked up the stairs and stopped 10 meters away from the doors of the church.

Standing right next to the door were two tall men clad in full obsidian black armor from head to toe, with swords strapped to their waists.

One wore the helmet of a lion, the other the helmet of an eagle. Their skin inside the helmets was pale like a corpse’s, and yet their eyes shone fiercely, like something living.

They were undead humans, but these ones were different. They carried a very strong aura, one that resembled seasoned warriors who had fought many battles.

But there was something more, something much darker...like death.

Yes...their bodies were leaking the energy of death. Confirming that they weren’t actual humans but undead.

At that moment, the two warriors released a sharp killing intent that slammed against me, making my shoulders tremble slightly from how heavy it was. The killing intent held nothing but malice.

But their attempt to make me cower in fear failed, as [Calm Mind] protected me against it, leaving me unaffected.

The warriors were slightly surprised by my calm gaze and frowned slightly.

"Who are you?" The man with the eagle helmet spoke, his voice raspy and deep.

"Who am I? I’m just a seeker of the flame, just like you..." I said.

"Who told you about the Flame? No one knows about the Flame other than us, who were tasked with the mission to find it...unless..." The man with the lion helmet spoke next, his voice full of contempt and rage. "...you are one of his subordinates."

His subordinates? Who was he talking about?

"Who are you talking about?" I asked.

The man with the lion mask unsheathed his sword and pointed it at me. "Don’t act like a fool, you know your master! And look at your armor, it’s stained with our people’s blood."

"Oh, about that..." I glanced at my bloody armor.

I looked quite guilty, but more importantly, my master? I have no freaking master, what kind of nonsense was he on.

To better explain things, let me tell you a bit about these people.

This town belonged to a civilization from long ago, tens of thousands of years back. It was a peaceful town that worshipped the God of Stories, the church in front of me was proof of that.

However, one day a plague appeared out of nowhere and started killing people. It was first diagnosed as a disease that had only killed one person, but then it started spreading from individual to individual.

And since the medical skills back then weren’t that advanced, they never found a cure for it, no matter how much they tried.

That was because there was never a cure.

So it kept killing people until one day, one of the sisters of the church got a revelation from their god on how to find a cure for this terrifying plague.

It was a flame that could grant amazing powers, including the ability to heal any type of illness.

A group of skilled individuals of that time, awakeners, were given a task to find that flame that could remove the plague, as their god had said.

However, what they hadn’t counted on was that the Flame, in order to grant its power, tested those who sought it based on their desires and emotions. And that the flame could not only be used for salvation, but also for corruption.

The very leader of the team got corrupted by their own desire, went mad and slaughtered thousands of people, including the ones in their own town.

If I remembered correctly, it was called the Massacre of the Dark Flame. That’s what I had called it when I wrote the book.

And these guys in front of me were responsible for it.

And now these guys were talking about me having a master, and someone else being responsible for all of this, as if they weren’t the ones who did it.

I recalled the Chapters about this particular event, and yet there was nothing about such a thing.

Either they were putting on an act, or they were actually telling the truth.

I confirmed they were telling the truth by activating [Emotion Manipulator] to detect if their words were malicious lies, but they weren’t.

[Emotion Manipulator] couldn’t detect if someone was lying if they didn’t have malicious intent. Someone could still lie even without malicious intent, which I wouldn’t be able to detect through [Emotion Manipulator].

But in this situation, I chose the latter.

So this situation didn’t make sense.

Unless...

I frowned at my own thoughts.

Ah, unless the story had changed again.

It became clear to me now why I didn’t understand what was happening.

The story had to have changed. That was the only answer.

Think about it, the existence of Yves and Ezio was something that wasn’t included in this book, and yet they still existed.

My eyebrows furrowed and my jaw tightened.

How did the story change? How was that possible?

There was only one person I could think of who could be responsible for this.

The Man in Yellow.

It had to be him. The very person who transmigrated me into this book.

I already had my suspicions about Yves’s existence being something only he could do, but now this confirmed it.

It was him.

But I only had one question:

How far had he changed the story?

I wasn’t dumb enough to think this could be the only thing he’d changed. No, there had to be more changes in the book.

Changes I knew jack shit about.

If that was the case, then the future was uncertain, and I couldn’t completely trust my knowledge of my own book.

Who knows what kind of things the Man in Yellow had done.

"Hah." I exhaled.

The bastard had clearly said he would make me experience my own book, not a version he’d modified!

I was scammed on that deal!

And now that I thought about it, nothing about whether my book was modified or not had ever been said to be disallowed in the deal.

And I fell for it.

I didn’t know what kind of game the Man in Yellow was planning, but I would not be a piece on his board.

That’s for sure.

At that moment, one of the warriors moved so fast that he covered the distance between me and them in the blink of an eye, pulling me out of my thoughts.

His sword, light silver, was cutting through the air, going for my neck.

Damn, they won’t even let me think for a second!
