I watched slowly as the Lion Knight’s blade cut the air and went straight towards my neck.

Just before the blade was inches from turning me headless, I ducked down, the blade hissing as it cut nothing but air. As I ducked, my hand was already gripping the hilt of my katana, which I pulled in a quick draw — my blade slid out of the sheath humming with mana, and slashed towards the Lion Knight’s extended arm.

The Lion Knight didn’t show any sign of panic and instead twisted his wrist with abnormal speed, and his blade thrust below and met my attack, stopping it from cutting his arm clean off.

A bright spark with a loud metallic sound lit up the place.

My arm was sent back and the next thing I saw was an armored knee headed straight for my face.

This would definitely be painful if it landed.

So I raised my hand just in time to block the attack. A clap sound was produced from blocking it and I was sent back a couple of steps.

"Ow." I let the block go and looked at my palm, now red from blocking the attack.

The Lion Knight didn’t stop there, and quickly covered the distance between us in a heartbeat, swinging his sword with both hands horizontally, aiming for my waist.

With speed, I raised my blade and blocked the attack, but the Lion Knight’s strength was so great that it sent me flying back a couple of meters.

I performed a controlled backflip mid-air and landed on the ground without any harm.

"As expected from an Apex Common monster." I murmured as I looked at my trembling hand.

Both knights were at the peak of the Common rank, and compared to the Nightmares I had fought the other day, these guys were the real deal, representing what a peak monster of the Common rank could do.

Normally, a Low Ascendant wouldn’t be fighting something that terrifyingly strong, but I was an exception.

The Lion Knight was quite huge, 1.8 meters tall with a strong physique that gave off a powerful aura, just like a lion. His sword was at least 40 centimeters longer than my katana and much heavier. Yet the guy swung it like it weighed nothing.

But it made sense, knights from that era relied on heavy weapons for more power.

This time I didn’t wait for him to attack. I leaned slightly forward and then my figure blurred, disappearing from where I stood.

I reappeared at the Lion Knight’s side, my blade a black blur that screamed as it tore through the air, threatening to pierce his chest. The Lion Knight dodged with quick reflexes by moving to the side, so I changed my katana’s trajectory, twisting my wrist and swinging back towards his neck.

The Lion Knight, with another astounding reflex, leaned backwards, dodging my attack by a hair’s length. Not a second after leaning back, he used that momentum to spin on his heel and perform a perfect roundhouse kick towards my exposed chest.

But that was his mistake, because as soon as he did that, mana ran wildly into my legs and I sidestepped with speed, giving me an opening to drop my blade and chop his leg off.

However, it seemed the Lion Knight wasn’t done, and instead of completing the roundhouse kick, he spun again, dodging my blade, and both his feet left the ground as he hit me with the other leg right in the stomach.

Twack!

Sharp pain filled my senses, and my body was sent flying back. My body rolled on the ground, but I quickly stopped myself by getting onto one knee.

"Argh." I coughed out a mouthful of blood.

That kick hurt so bad. It was like being hit by a fricking moving car.

I looked at my stomach, where my armor was bent inward from the kick.

"This bastard hits pretty hard." I murmured as I wiped the blood off my lips with the back of my hand.

Thankfully, the armor blocked most of the attack’s power, and no internal organs were damaged.

"You will die here today." The Lion Knight said as he started walking slowly towards me.

"I’m not so sure about that."

I fixed the dent in my armor like it was never damaged and stood up.

Then I looked behind him — at the Eagle Knight, who hadn’t moved from the door since the beginning of the fight — and said:

"You there, aren’t you going to join us?"

The Eagle Knight just looked at me and said, "My brother is enough to deal with your filth."

"Ouch, I’ve never been called filth before. I don’t smell that bad, do I?" I started sniffing myself.

And as expected, there was nothing filthy about me — well, except for the blood of the undead I’d killed earlier, but aside from that, I smelled nothing but heavenly, because I took a bath every single day, unlike Ezio.

Talking about Ezio, it suddenly felt weird not having him lurking in my shadow, speaking in my head. It felt empty.

It wasn’t like I was missing that ugly bastard anyway.

"Well, if that’s what you think, then don’t blame me for killing your brother in front of you because you refused to help." I said with a smile.

Well, it was easier said than done. The Lion Knight drew from the lion itself. He had the strength, defense, speed and stamina.

Talking about stamina, since he was no longer human and now an undead, he had uncanny amounts of stamina — better say, unlimited stamina. So these guys couldn’t get tired, just like the undead skeletons — they were powered by negative energy instead of biological processes.

So it would be quite the pain to break through the Lion Knight’s defense.

But the real problem was that these two guys, aside from being able to curse me, had some really annoying abilities.

Aside from that, their battle experience put me at a real disadvantage. However, the more disadvantaged I was, the more room for growth I’d have, so it was a win.

Mana ran wildly through my lungs, and darkness energy wrapped around my figure.

"Prepare yourself, oh Lion Knight." I said as I took a stance with my katana forward, wrapped in a dark aura. My gaze was no longer playful but cold.

The Lion Knight’s body suddenly released an intense brown aura that shook the ground.

Without uttering a single word, tension coiled in our legs and with a burst of motion, we both propelled forward, leaving streaks of black and brown behind us.
