My vision turned dark, and then I found myself right in front of the two huge doors of the church again.

I backed away from them as my stomach suddenly churned, causing me to throw up.

"Ughhh!" I groaned in disgust after wiping my mouth.

Why the heck did I feel so nauseous after dying again?

Rumble~

My stomach rumbled again, and I threw up once more.

After that, I finally started feeling better and didn’t vomit again.

Surely, dying wasn’t pleasant.

I had failed my second attempt, and I had been beaten miserably. I didn’t even manage to land a single scratch on Sister Friede.

She was really strong.

Throughout the fight, I had been trying to analyze every single one of her movements with the scythe and learn from them, but I failed to even learn one because I was too busy getting beaten by her.

Her combat experience was terrifying.

Ancient.

It showed that she had experienced thousands upon thousands of battles and had come out victorious.

"She wouldn’t even let me through." I clicked my tongue.

Every attempt I made to get past her—the first step of my perfect yet simple plan—had been completely ruined.

But damn, this was only the second time I had lost twice to someone ever since I came into this world.

I was never cocky. I knew I wouldn’t always win my fights and that there would always be people capable of beating me.

After all, the saying goes: there’s always someone better than you at what you do.

The good thing about reviving was that it removed all the fatigue, mana exhaustion, and curses from the previous run and brought me back to perfect condition.

I had three attempts remaining.

Within those three attempts, I had to get the dagger, weaken Sister Friede, and hopefully kill her.

I closed my eyes and recalled every interaction I had with her during the previous two runs, remembering every attack, block, and movement.

Then I made sure they were ingrained into my mind so I wouldn’t forget them.

I clapped my hands together.

"Let’s go."

I stepped forward and opened the church doors.

As soon as I entered, the doors closed behind me.

The damage we had caused during the previous run had completely disappeared. The wooden seats were no longer broken, and the marble floor and walls that had been cracked were pristine and clean, as though no battle to the death had ever taken place.

It was expected.

After all, the church was the only place that reverted to its original state after every death.

However, Sister Friede retained her memories from the previous runs.

Speaking of her, she wasn’t kneeling at the altar like before.

The altar was empty.

From the corner of my eye, I caught a flash of blue coming straight toward me.

I immediately stepped back.

A scythe wrapped in frost slammed into the spot where I had been standing, its blade sinking deep into the marble floor. Cracks spread from the point of impact as pieces of stone and debris scattered across the ground.

Speak of the devil.

Sister Friede had tried to kill me the moment I entered the church.

She had probably sensed my presence outside and waited for me to step through the doors before attacking.

I clenched my hand into a fist and punched toward her chest.

Friede reacted immediately, raising the shaft of her scythe to block my fist.

The impact still sent her skidding backward several meters, her feet scraping against the marble floor.

"Did you miss me?" I asked with a smile as darkness gathered in my right hand and formed into a scythe.

"Definitely not with that stench," Sister Friede replied calmly.

I placed my free hand over my chest.

"Ouch. You’ve hurt my feelings."

Without wasting another second, I gathered mana into my legs and dashed toward the altar.

The distance disappeared quickly beneath my feet, but Sister Friede reacted almost immediately.

I had barely reached the bottom of the altar stairs when she appeared beside me.

Her scythe swept low toward my legs.

I jumped over the blade and landed on one of the steps, already preparing to rush up the rest of the stairs.

Before I could take another step, however, something suddenly grabbed my ponytail.

My head snapped backward.

What the—

Sister Friede yanked me back with enough strength that, for a moment, I genuinely thought she was going to rip my beautiful snow-white hair straight from my scalp.

Hey! Anything but the hair!

Before I could protest, she swung me away from the stairs and threw me across the church.

I twisted my body in midair and landed several meters away in a crouch, one hand pressed against the floor to steady myself.

"What are you trying to do?" Sister Friede asked.

"Me?"

I stood up and casually shook my head as though I hadn’t just tried to rush past her.

Instead of attacking again, I walked over to one of the benches on my right and sat down, crossing one leg over the other.

"Nothing. I’m just trying to offer a prayer to your God—"

I didn’t even get to finish.

A white-blue crescent of frost tore across the marble floor toward me, freezing everything it passed over.

My eyes widened.

I threw myself to the side just before the attack reached me.

The frost arc tore through the bench I had been sitting on, splitting it cleanly in half. Ice immediately spread across the broken pieces, covering the old wood in a thick layer of frost.

I looked at the destroyed bench before slowly turning my attention back to Sister Friede.

So much for letting a man pray.

Sweat ran down my forehead as I stared at the frozen seats.

She was definitely not playing.

A black scythe formed in my hand, and I immediately dashed sideways toward the altar. Unfortunately, it was futile.

Sister Friede was still faster than me, and before I could reach the stairs, she appeared in my path and blocked me once again.

Our scythes collided as we swung at each other.

Clang! Clang!

Unlike during my previous attempts, I didn’t struggle as much to keep up with her attacks.

I was starting to understand the way she fought—the angles she preferred, how she moved her scythe, and where her attacks were most likely to come from.

Still, understanding her movements and properly defending against them were two completely different things.
