Her scythe swept toward my right side, but I moved out of its path and immediately stepped closer, entering the space where using such a large weapon became more difficult.

I drove my armored knee toward her stomach, but Friede simply caught it with the open palm of her left hand.

Frost immediately began gathering around her fingers.

Not good.

Before the frost could spread across my armor, I pulled my knee away and used the momentum to twist my waist.

My other leg came around in a roundhouse kick aimed directly at the side of her face.

Swoosh!

Sister Friede watched my boot approaching with the same unbothered expression she always had.

Just before the sole could connect with her face, she tilted her head to the side, allowing my kick to pass harmlessly beside her.

I immediately pulled my leg back before she could grab it.

But I wasn’t done.

[Darkness Shaping] was already activating at the same time, I expanded my darkness circle across the floor around us.

Countless black spears erupted from the marble beneath Sister Friede, each one aiming to impale a different part of her body.

They attacked from several directions, leaving almost no room for her to move.

Sister Friede remained calm as always. She raised her scythe and began cutting through every spear that came within reach.

Her weapon moved so quickly that its blade became a blur, slicing through my constructs with almost no resistance. Wherever the frost-covered blade passed, ice spread across the severed ends of the spears before they crumbled away.

I wasn’t going to stand there and watch.

While the spears continued attacking her, I rushed forward and joined the assault.

I spun my scythe once above my head before bringing it around my body, using the movement to build momentum.

When I had gathered enough force, I gripped the shaft tightly with both hands.

Darkness surged along the blade.

I swung vertically.

A large arc of dark energy was released from the scythe and tore across the church toward her.

Sister Friede was still moving between the countless spears, cutting and blocking them as the dark arc rapidly closed the distance between us.

Come on.

Just get hit for once.

For a brief moment, I actually thought it would work.

Just before the attack could cut her in half, Sister Friede pushed herself off the ground and leaped into the air.

She pulled her scythe close to her chest and spun horizontally like a screw, slipping above the dark arc by only a few inches.

My attack passed beneath her and continued across the church before smashing into the wall behind her.

BOOM!

The entire church shook from the impact.

Stone cracked, and debris fell from the ceiling as my attack carved a massive line through the wall, cutting deep enough that I could see the outside through the opening.

But I didn’t have time to admire the damage.

Sister Friede was still in the air.

She pulled her scythe back with both hands wrapped tightly around the shaft.

Frost gathered around its blade, growing brighter and denser until the weapon began to hum from the amount of energy concentrated around it.

Then she swung.

A massive white-blue arc of frost erupted from her scythe and rushed toward me.

There wasn’t enough time to block it, and considering what her frost had already done to me during my previous attempts, I didn’t particularly want to find out whether my defenses could withstand it.

So I copied what she had just done.

I kicked off the ground and threw myself into a corkscrew flip, allowing the frost arc to pass beneath me.

The attack continued toward the entrance of the church and slammed into the two massive doors behind me.

BAM!

The already damaged doors shattered apart, sending frozen pieces of wood and stone flying outside.

I was still spinning through the air when something felt wrong.

Sister Friede was gone.

My eyes immediately searched for her, but before I could even figure out where she had gone, she was already beneath me with her fist pulled back.

Fuck.

When did she get down there so fast?

I couldn’t change direction in midair, and there wasn’t enough time to form anything strong enough to protect myself.

With no other option, I crossed my arms slightly and covered my body in as much mana as I could.

All I could do was brace for impact.

Her fist slammed directly into my chest.

CRACK!

The first thing I felt was my chest plate caving inward from the force.

The metal held for less than a second before breaking apart, and then came the unmistakable feeling of several ribs snapping beneath it.

My body remained suspended in the air for a brief moment.

Then the force hit me completely.

I was launched backward like a human missile.

My body flew through what remained of the church entrance and continued outside before slamming violently into the ground.

I bounced once, then rolled several times across the stone and dirt until I finally came to a stop on my back.

For a moment, I simply stared hazily at the dark sky above me.

Then the pain arrived.

"Ghk—!"

Agonizing pain exploded from my chest and spread throughout my entire body.

It was so intense that I couldn’t even tell exactly where it hurt anymore.

My ribs felt completely destroyed, and every attempt to breathe sent another wave of pain through my chest.

"Cough! Cough!"

Blood sprayed from my mouth.

More began leaking from my nose and running down the sides of my face.

I tried taking another breath.

Nothing.

My eyes widened.

My ribs weren’t the only things that had been damaged—hat punch had crushed my lungs as well.

My body immediately began trying to repair itself, mana instinctively moving toward the damaged areas, but the injuries were far too severe.

Healing something like this wasn’t going to happen quickly enough on its own.

I needed a powerful healer.

Or at least a high-grade healing potion.

Unfortunately, I had neither.

"I... I can’t..."

I desperately tried to inhale, but only more blood entered my throat.

"I can’t... breathe..."

My hands moved toward my neck even though there was nothing there for me to fix.

It was simply instinct.

My body knew it needed oxygen and was desperately trying to find a way to get some.

I coughed again, but this time barely anything came out. My lungs were filling with blood.

Seriously?

After everything I’d survived, this was how I was going to die this time?

My vision slowly began to blur.

The dark clouds above me blended together until I could barely make out their shapes anymore, while the sounds around me became distant and muffled.

I tried taking one final breath.

Nothing came.

My eyes rolled back as my consciousness finally disappeared.

I choked to death on my own blood.

And truly...

It was easily one of the top five worst ways to ever die.
