Transmigration: I Made A Deal With A Man in Yellow
Chapter 93: Black Flame [1]The frost covering Sister Friede’s main scythe disappeared, and in its place, black flames spread across the entire blade. The fire was strangely beautiful, almost mesmerizing to look at, but the heat coming from it was anything but pleasant. The air around the blade distorted and groaned from the temperature, and the black tentacles and spikes restraining Friede melted away almost instantly, disappearing without leaving even ash behind.
And well...
That wasn’t a good sign.
Sister Friede slowly raised her left hand. Blue particles gathered around her palm before extending outward and taking the shape of another scythe. This one was smaller than the weapon in her right hand, but its blade was covered in the familiar white-blue frost I had already learned to hate.
I stared at the two weapons.
Huh.
She could dual wield?
"For staining the church of our God, I shall no longer grant you a swift death. Instead, I will make it a painful one."
Sister Friede raised the smaller frost-covered scythe above her while holding the larger one in front of her body. Black flames burned along one blade while frost flowed from the other, giving her an almost majestic appearance despite the fact that both weapons were probably about to be used to kill me.
"Child, the Black Flame shall burn and slowly devour your soul. And perhaps, in your next life—if there is even enough of your soul left for another—you will remember this pain and repent for what you have done."
Now that sounded horrifying.
I was just trying to get a dagger!
Sister Friede leaned forward.
My instincts immediately screamed at me.
Before I could even blink, the marble beneath her feet cracked and she crossed the distance between us. She appeared directly in front of me with the Black Flame scythe already cutting horizontally toward my torso.
Even before the blade reached me, I could feel its heat through my armor.
Mana surged through my legs, and I pushed myself sideways. The flaming blade passed inches from my body, leaving a trail of black fire behind it as I avoided the attack.
I barely had time to regain my footing before another blade entered my vision.
The frost scythe.
Shit.
I had already forgotten she was using two weapons.
I raised the Black Dagger and intercepted the blade before it could reach my neck.
Clang!
The impact traveled through my arm, but the dagger held.
Before Sister Friede could bring the Black Flame scythe around for another attack, I knocked her frost scythe aside and darted away from the altar.
Her missed attack continued downward.
The frost-covered blade struck the table behind me.
A white-blue arc of energy erupted from the point of impact and cut straight through it. Both halves immediately froze solid before collapsing onto the marble floor, scattering the remains of the candles and broken statues I had already destroyed.
"Calm down, Sis—"
I didn’t get to finish.
Sister Friede swung her main scythe.
A crescent of black fire tore through the air toward me at frightening speed.
I threw my upper body backward, arching myself as far as I could while keeping my feet planted. The flaming arc passed directly above my face, close enough that the heat slapped against my skin and almost burned me despite never making contact.
BOOM!
The attack struck the church wall behind me and exploded.
Stone and burning debris scattered across the floor as a large hole appeared in the wall. Black flames clung stubbornly to the broken edges, continuing to burn even though there was seemingly nothing there to feed them.
I glanced over my shoulder at the damage.
Yeah.
I definitely didn’t want that touching me.
My attention immediately returned to Sister Friede.
She was already moving.
Her two scythes changed positions as she dashed forward, the smaller frost weapon moving into her dominant attacking position while the Black Flame scythe shifted behind her. She suddenly lowered her stance, bending her knees deeply.
I recognized that movement.
A leap.
Sister Friede launched herself high above me.
The frost scythe rose over her head as more white-blue energy gathered around its blade. The weapon hummed louder and louder as she descended, her body falling toward me with enough force to make every one of my senses scream at me to move.
I didn’t hesitate.
Mana surged into my legs, and I jumped as far away from her as I could.
Sister Friede crashed into the ground.
BOOM!
The frost scythe struck the marble, and an explosion of white-blue energy erupted outward.
Ice burst from the floor in every direction.
The freezing wave expanded for nearly thirty meters, covering the marble in thick frost as jagged formations of ice rose from the ground. Several rows of old wooden benches were caught within the attack and froze almost instantly, their rotten wood disappearing beneath layers of white-blue ice.
I landed outside the worst of the blast and stared at the devastation.
"Fucking hell..."
If I had been even a second slower, I would have been caught in that.
And considering this was Sister Friede, simply being frozen probably wouldn’t have been the end of it. She would have walked over and removed my head while I stood there like an ice sculpture.
Sister Friede didn’t give me time to recover.
She dragged the blade of her frost scythe across the marble floor, leaving a frozen line behind it. Then she swept the weapon upward in my direction.
The frozen trail suddenly erupted.
Jagged icicles burst from the ground one after another, rapidly growing taller as they raced toward me.
I raised my free hand.
Darkness immediately gathered in front of me and formed into a thick wall.
The first wave of ice crashed against it.
BANG!
Cracks spread across my construct.
Then the icicles broke through.
"What?"
The wall shattered apart, and the frozen trail continued straight toward me.
I immediately darted sideways before several massive icicles erupted from the exact spot where I had been standing. Their sharp tips rose high above my head, more than capable of impaling me if I had been caught in their path.
My boots had barely touched the ground when I heard another scraping sound.
Sister Friede was dragging the blade of her main scythe across the marble now.
Oh, come on.
She swept the weapon upward.
This time, a trail of black fire erupted from the floor.
The flames rushed toward me in almost the same way as the ice had, burning across the marble and leaving a scorched path behind them. I immediately pushed mana into my legs again and dashed in the opposite direction, narrowly avoiding the flames as they passed beside me.
I finally stopped several meters away and tightened my grip around the Black Dagger.
My eyes moved between the frozen section of the church and the trail of black flames burning across the other side. One half of the battlefield was covered in frost, while the other was being consumed by fire.
Then I looked back at Sister Friede.
She stood between the two, holding a scythe in each hand as frost drifted from one blade and black flames curled around the other.
"Fire and ice..." I muttered, unable to hide my amazement. "What a combination."
This had just become a lot more difficult.
I couldn’t use my scythe while holding the dagger, and trying to dual wield both would only make things harder. Sister Friede could manage two scythes because she had the skill and experience to do so. I didn’t.
So I kept the Black Dagger firmly in my hand.
I only needed to stab her once.
Mana coiled around my legs, and I dashed forward.
A black flame arc immediately tore through the air toward me. I lowered my body and ducked beneath it, feeling the scorching heat pass over my head. The moment I straightened myself, a white-blue arc of frost came from the opposite direction, forcing me to jump over it.
Another black arc followed.
Then another frost arc.
They kept coming.
Sister Friede swung both scythes continuously, filling the church with alternating waves of black fire and frost. I pushed my concentration to its limit, watching every movement of her arms and adjusting my body accordingly. I ducked beneath one attack, twisted around another, then jumped sideways as a frost arc passed beneath my feet.
One mistake would be enough to kill me.
I continued pushing forward until I finally reached her.
The moment I entered her range, I drove the Black Dagger toward her chest.
Clang!
Her frost scythe intercepted it.
Surprisingly, no ice spread across the dagger. Even with the frost-covered blade pressing directly against it, the weapon remained completely unaffected.
So it really did counter her magic.
