I twisted my wrist, broke away from the clash, and immediately redirected the dagger toward her leg. Sister Friede brought down her Black Flame scythe and blocked it before countering with an upward swing aimed at my head.

I pulled my head backward.

Swoosh!

The burning blade passed through the space where my face had been.

Using the movement, I leaned farther back, spun on my heel, and threw a side kick toward her ribs. Sister Friede reacted immediately, bringing the shaft of her frost scythe into the path of my boot.

Clang!

My foot slammed against it.

Frost immediately began spreading across my armored boot and crawling toward my leg. Before it could reach my flesh, I released the affected section of armor. The frozen darkness crumbled away, and another layer formed around my foot almost immediately.

I pushed myself backward to create some distance.

Sister Friede didn’t allow it.

Her feet barely touched the marble as she glided after me, closing the distance almost instantly. The Black Flame scythe came around in a wide swing, releasing a wave of fire directly toward me.

I raised my free hand.

Condensed darkness erupted from the floor and formed a thick wall between us.

The black flames crashed into it.

BOOM!

The wall immediately began melting.

I hadn’t expected it to last. I only needed it to buy me enough time to reposition myself.

At least, that was the plan.

Just as I stepped away, Sister Friede suddenly leaped over the burning wall.

My eyes widened.

Her body twisted in the air, and her foot slammed directly into my chest.

Bang!

The impact launched me backward.

I crashed through several rows of wooden benches, smashing them apart as my body continued sliding across the floor. Before I could be thrown any farther, I drove the Black Dagger into the marble and gripped its handle tightly.

The blade carved a long line through the floor before finally stopping me.

"Agh... that hurt."

I raised my head.

A black flaming arc was already inches from my face.

Shit.

Several darkness tentacles erupted beside me, wrapped around my torso, and violently pulled me away.

BOOM!

The arc struck the place where I had been lying and exploded, scattering burning pieces of marble and broken wood throughout the church.

I didn’t even get the chance to stand.

Sister Friede appeared directly above me.

Both scythes were already moving.

One came from my left.

The other from my right.

They closed around my waist like a deadly embrace, ready to cut my body into three separate pieces.

Darkness gathered beneath me.

A pillar suddenly erupted from the floor and launched me straight into the air.

CLANG!

Both of Friede’s scythes collided beneath my feet.

I escaped by inches.

Sister Friede immediately looked up and swung both weapons.

Two arcs followed me into the air—one made of black flame and the other of frost.

With nothing beneath my feet to push against, I twisted my body using the momentum from the pillar. The frost arc passed beside me while the black flame arc barely missed my torso.

Barely.

Part of the frost still scraped across my armor, tearing several pieces away, while the edge of the black flames burned through another section.

But I was alive.

And Sister Friede was standing directly below me.

Perfect.

I stretched out my hand.

A massive pillar of darkness erupted beneath her feet.

For once, Sister Friede hadn’t expected it.

The pillar slammed into her and launched her upward.

Straight toward me.

Her eyes widened slightly.

I pulled my arm back.

Then punched her directly in the face.

BANG!

My fist connected with everything I had.

Sister Friede was sent flying downward like a ragdoll. She slammed into the marble floor hard enough to crack it, bounced several times, then rolled across the church before finally stopping on one knee.

I descended a moment later and landed in a crouch.

Something slowly fell between us.

A piece of white fabric.

Her veil.

It gently landed on the marble floor.

I slowly raised my eyes toward Sister Friede.

For the first time, I saw her face.

Short black hair surrounded pale features that had always been hidden beneath the veil. She was beautiful—almost unnaturally so. The kind of face that looked as though it had been carefully sculpted by a God.

But the right side was different.

Burn scars covered part of her face, stretching across her otherwise pale skin.

If not for those burns, she would have been even more beautiful.

Sister Friede slowly raised her head.

Amethyst eyes met mine.

"You are the first to see my face..." she said quietly.

"And I’ll be the last to see it," I finished for her.

My breathing had become heavy.

I could feel my strength disappearing.

My mana reserves were almost empty, and the effects of the frost and curse had already seeped deep into my body. My limbs felt heavier with every passing second.

I couldn’t keep fighting like this.

Neither could I afford to retreat.

This was it.

One final attempt.

I tightened my grip around the Black Dagger.

Mana surged into my legs.

Every remaining bit I could gather flowed downward, wrapping around my muscles until they tensed painfully beneath my armor.

Then I launched myself forward.

BOOM!

The marble cracked beneath my feet as I shot across the church like a bullet.

Sister Friede moved at the same moment.

Black flames trailed behind one side of her body while frost followed the other. Both scythes were drawn back, ready to strike.

Neither of us slowed down.

Neither of us dodged.

We met in the middle.

Stab.

Slash.

Spurt.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

We simply stood there, our faces only a short distance apart as my purple eyes stared directly into her amethyst ones.

Something warm ran down my stomach.

Something else fell beside me.

Thud.

I didn’t look down yet.

Instead, my eyes wandered toward the burned side of Sister Friede’s face.

"What happened to your face?" I asked.

"A price for wielding the Black Flame," she answered calmly.

Crimson blood slowly ran from the corner of her lips.

"I see."

Only then did I look down.

The Black Dagger was buried deep inside Sister Friede’s chest.

My right hand was still wrapped tightly around its handle.

I had done it.

Then I looked at myself.

Ah.

That wasn’t good.

The blade of Sister Friede’s Black Flame scythe had pierced completely through the side of my stomach, entering from the front and coming out through my back.

Her other scythe had done something worse.

My left arm was gone.

All that remained was a bleeding stump below my shoulder, while the severed arm lay several feet away on the marble floor.

"Cough!"

Blood burst from my mouth and splattered across the front of my armor.

My knees nearly gave out.

Then I noticed the flames.

Black fire had already begun spreading across my body.

It crawled from the scythe buried inside me, slowly covering my stomach before spreading toward my chest, legs, and remaining arm.

The pain came immediately.

My entire body screamed.

It wasn’t like normal fire. I could feel it burning deeper than my flesh, as though the flames were reaching into something beneath my physical body.

Maybe Friede hadn’t been exaggerating when she said the Black Flame could burn the soul.

[Calm Mind] remained active, preventing the pain from completely overwhelming me. I couldn’t scream. I couldn’t even cry despite every part of my body telling me to.

At that moment, I couldn’t decide whether [Calm Mind] was a blessing or a curse.

Because even though it stopped me from losing myself to the pain...

I could still feel everything.

The smell reached my nose next.

Burning flesh.

My flesh.

God, this fucking sucked.

The black flames continued spreading upward, burning through my armor and consuming the skin underneath. My vision began to darken as my body finally reached its limit.

But strangely enough...

I couldn’t bring myself to care.

My eyes moved back toward Sister Friede’s chest.

The Black Dagger was still there.

Buried exactly where I needed it to be.

A smile slowly formed on my burning face.

I had done it.

I had lost the fight.

I was going to die again.

But this time...

I had succeeded.

The Black Flame reached my face and consumed what remained of my smile.

My vision turned dark.

And I died for the fourth time.
