Transmigration: I Made A Deal With A Man in Yellow
Chapter 96: A dark past [1]My eyes blinked several times in confusion as I looked around.
"Where am I?"
I was standing inside a small bedroom. The walls and floor were made of wood, with a simple study table sitting in one corner beside a wardrobe. On the other side of the room was a small window overlooking what appeared to be a town, and directly beside it was a small bed.
Someone was sleeping in it.
A young girl, probably no older than twelve, was curled beneath the blankets.
’What the heck? Why am I suddenly inside a little girl’s room?’
I remembered killing Sister Friede, then receiving that strange notification about someone—or something—activating its Authority. My vision had gone completely dark immediately afterward, and now I was standing here.
Seriously, what was up with me blacking out nowadays?
I swear, this was getting annoying.
"Elfriede!"
A grown woman’s voice suddenly called from somewhere outside the room, pulling me from my thoughts.
Elfriede?
Isn’t that—
The little girl stirred beneath her blankets at the sound of the voice. After a few seconds, her eyes slowly opened, revealing a familiar pair of amethyst eyes still heavy with sleep.
Those same eyes moved toward me.
Our gazes met.
I froze.
Oh shit.
Why hadn’t I hidden the moment I appeared?!
From her perspective, some strange man dressed in black armor had suddenly appeared inside her bedroom and was now standing there watching her sleep. She was going to think I was some kind of creep!
Not that this was my fault. I had been teleported here without warning.
Still, explaining that to a twelve-year-old probably wasn’t going to help my case.
The girl continued staring in my direction, so I forced an awkward smile and raised my hands slightly.
"Hello. Please don’t panic. I’m not a creep, so please don’t scream—"
"Elfriede!" the woman called again.
The girl’s eyes shifted away from me.
She rubbed them with both hands, pushed the blanket aside, and swung her legs over the edge of the bed. A pair of slippers had been placed neatly on the floor beside her, and she slipped her feet into them before standing.
"I’m up, Mother!" she called back.
She quickly put on a nun-like garment over her clothes before walking toward the door.
Then she left.
I remained standing there.
Completely dumbfounded.
"The hell?"
I looked at the closed door.
Didn’t she just look directly at me?
For a moment, I wondered if she was blind, but that didn’t make any sense. Her eyes had clearly followed my direction when she woke up. I had been preparing myself for screaming, crying, or at least a confused question about why some random man was standing inside her bedroom.
Instead, she had acted as though I wasn’t there.
My confusion only grew, but another thought quickly pushed it aside.
Elfriede.
That was Sister Friede’s full name.
I remembered the System notification clearly.
[You have slain a Greater Common Monster, Elfriede of Sidegard.]
And that girl had the exact same amethyst eyes as her.
I looked around the small bedroom again.
"No way..."
Was this Sister Friede?
More specifically...
Was I seeing her past?
There was only one way to find out.
Since standing around inside a little girl’s bedroom definitely wasn’t going to answer anything, I followed her outside.
I stepped into a long wooden corridor. The walls, floor, and ceiling were all made from the same dark wood, and several closed doors stretched along both sides. Elfriede was already walking toward the far end when doors began opening one after another.
More girls stepped into the corridor.
Most looked around Elfriede’s age, although a few were younger or older. They all wore similar nun-like clothing, and soon they began following one another down the hallway.
Elfriede joined them.
And naturally, I followed too.
If this really was Sister Friede’s past, I wanted to know what exactly I had been brought here to see.
We walked through several corridors before the girls eventually encountered another group coming from the opposite direction. This one consisted mostly of boys wearing simple black-and-white outfits similar to the girls’ clothing.
So their sleeping areas were separated by gender.
The two groups quickly mixed together, and the previously quiet corridor became filled with lively chatter. Some of the children laughed while others talked among themselves as they continued walking.
I stayed near Elfriede.
Eventually, we reached the end of the corridor, where two massive wooden doors stood at the entrance to a large hall. Two tall knights in armor guarded either side of them.
As the children approached, the knights pulled the doors open.
The group began entering.
I was about to follow when an idea came to me.
I stepped away from the children and walked toward one of the knights.
Then I stood directly in front of him.
He didn’t react.
I leaned slightly closer and stared straight into his face.
Still nothing.
"Hmmm."
I waved my hand in front of his eyes.
"Can you not see me?"
Nothing.
"Hey. Hello?"
The knight remained completely motionless.
Alright.
Maybe he was just very disciplined.
I needed something that would definitely get a reaction.
"If you don’t reply to me right now, you’re gay."
Silence.
I waited.
The knight didn’t even blink.
That normally should’ve worked.
"I guess you’re gay then."
I remained there for another moment, studying him until another idea suddenly came to mind.
"Oh, this should work."
I slapped the side of my fist against my open palm.
Talking clearly wasn’t going to get a reaction, so what about physical contact?
I raised my fist.
"Sorry about this."
Then I punched him directly in the face.
Or at least, I tried to.
My fist went straight through his head.
I froze.
There was no impact.
No broken nose, no scream.
Nothing.
My arm simply passed through his face as though the knight wasn’t physically there.
"What kind of sorcery is this?"
I quickly pulled my arm back and stared at my hand.
Then I tried again.
My fist passed straight through him.
I slapped him.
Nothing.
I kicked his leg.
My foot passed through that too.
I even tried spitting at him—which was definitely improper behavior for someone of my noble status, but whatever. I needed answers.
Even that passed through him without doing anything.
The knight remained completely unaware of my existence.
I slowly lowered my hands.
"I get it now..."
Everything suddenly made sense.
Nobody reacted when I spoke.
Elfriede hadn’t noticed me despite seemingly looking directly at me.
And I couldn’t physically interact with anything.
My eyes widened.
"I am a ghost!"
I remained completely serious for about two seconds before immediately shaking my head.
"No, that’s stupid. Ghosts don’t exist. What am I talking about?"
Although...
I looked down at my hands.
Considering I had recently been transported into the past through a prayer, fought undead knights, died four times, resurrected four times, and killed a woman who could wield black soul-burning fire...
Maybe ghosts weren’t really where I should be drawing the line.
I stared at my hand for another second before shaking my head again.
"Whatever. I’ll figure it out later."
The last few children were already disappearing into the hall.
Remembering why I was here in the first place, I stopped wasting time with the knight and walked through the massive doors after them.
If this truly was Sister Friede’s past, then there had to be a reason I was being shown it.
And I intended to find out what that reason was.
