Everyone inside the hall was eating and drinking. Judging by the amount of food covering the tables and the morning light coming through the windows, this was probably the dining hall, and it was time for breakfast.

With my eyesight, it didn’t take long for me to find Elfriede among the crowd. She was sitting at a round table with four other children, making five of them in total.

"Hey, Friede, what do you think about today’s first combat lesson?" a boy sitting across from her asked. He had obsidian-black hair and bright orange eyes, and judging by his expression, he seemed genuinely excited about the idea of fighting.

"Froyers, you know Elfriede doesn’t like it when you call her that!" the girl sitting on Elfriede’s left immediately complained. She had pale silver hair and purple eyes.

"It’s a great nickname. What are you talking about?" Froyers huffed. "You’re just jealous because I didn’t give you a nickname, Liliane."

Liliane’s face immediately turned red, and she slammed her hand against the table.

"Ew! I would never want a nickname from you!"

"Sure you wouldn’t."

"I wouldn’t!"

The two continued bickering until another girl sitting beside Liliane finally spoke. Unlike everyone else at the table, she had remained quiet throughout the entire argument, eating with the same cold and aloof expression on her face.

"Liliane."

That was all she said.

Liliane immediately flinched and sat properly in her chair.

"Sorry, Sister."

Froyers stared at the older girl before clicking his tongue.

"Seriously, Yuria, you need to teach me how you do that. You only have to say her name and she listens."

"Sit down, you too, Froyers," the last member of the group said. He had been peacefully eating his breakfast throughout the argument and now looked slightly annoyed. "You two are always quarreling like children."

Froyers rolled his eyes but sat back down.

"Not you too, Arkens."

"Hehe."

Elfriede covered her mouth as she giggled at their interaction.

"You two look so cute when you fight."

Both Froyers and Liliane immediately turned red.

"No, we don’t!" they shouted at the same time.

Their simultaneous answer only made Elfriede laugh harder.

After calming down, she looked toward Froyers. "You asked me about the combat lesson, right? I’m not really sure what to expect, but I think everything will go well."

Arkens dipped a piece of bread into his soup before nodding. "I think so too, although I heard the training is going to be quite harsh."

"Hah! Are you scared?" Froyers puffed out his chest proudly. "Fighting is fun. I’m going to beat all the other kids’ asses."

"Language, Froyers."

Arkens smacked the back of his head.

"Ow!"

Froyers turned and glared at him while rubbing the spot.

Liliane didn’t share his excitement. She looked down at her food with a troubled expression and played nervously with her spoon.

"I think it’s going to be scary."

Elfriede noticed immediately and gently patted her back.

"It’ll be alright. We’re all going to be there together."

Liliane looked at her before giving a small nod.

Elfriede then turned toward Yuria, who had been silently eating her soup throughout the conversation.

"What about you, Yuria?"

Yuria lifted another spoonful of soup to her mouth and quietly ate it before putting the spoon back down.

"Sword."

Elfriede tilted her head, still wearing the same kind smile.

"Sword?"

Yuria nodded.

"I want to train with the sword."

Everyone around the table smiled at the simple answer.

"Yuria has always been obsessed with swords," Arkens said.

"Yeah!" Liliane immediately added. "My sister is going to become a master swordsman one day."

Yuria didn’t react much to the praise. She simply picked up her spoon and continued eating as though she hadn’t heard anything.

The group continued talking among themselves while I stood nearby, silently watching them.

I recognized these children.

Well...

At least some of them.

Elfriede was obviously Sister Friede’s younger self. There was no mistaking those amethyst eyes, and the System itself had already confirmed her full name.

The two boys were familiar as well.

Froyers...

Arkens...

The Lion Knight and Eagle Knight.

I stared at the two boys for several seconds.

So they had known Friede since childhood?

That wasn’t something I remembered writing.

Then there were the other two girls, Liliane and Yuria. From their conversation, they were apparently sisters, but I couldn’t remember Elfriede having anything to do with two sisters like them. I definitely didn’t remember Froyers and Arkens growing up in the same orphanage as her either.

Another change.

The frown I had been suppressing finally appeared on my face.

Things were different again.

At least I was beginning to understand what this place was.

This wasn’t another dimension like the one I had entered through the prayer. It wasn’t the actual past either.

It was a memory.

Or perhaps a recollection of the past that I was being forced to experience.

That explained why nobody could see or hear me and why everything I tried to touch simply passed through my body.

And considering everything I had seen so far...

These were most likely Sister Friede’s memories.

Before I could think any further, everything around me suddenly shifted.

The dining hall disappeared.

The tables, children, food, and walls blurred away, and in the next moment, I found myself standing somewhere completely different.

Clack! Clack!

The sound of wooden weapons colliding filled my ears.

I was now standing inside a large training ground just outside the orphanage. Dozens of children were scattered around the field, sparring against one another using wooden swords and other practice weapons while several knights watched from the sides.

Most of the children fought exactly how I expected beginners to fight.

Badly.

Some swung their weapons with both eyes closed because they were afraid of getting hit. Others backed away whenever their opponents moved forward, and a few looked like they were trying harder not to hurt each other than actually win.

But several children stood out immediately.

One of them was Yuria.

Clack!

She was fighting a boy noticeably taller than her. At first glance, most people would’ve probably considered the match unfair.

And they would have been right.

Just not for the boy.

Yuria was a menace.

The wooden sword moved naturally in her hands as she knocked aside the boy’s weapon, stepped into his guard, and struck him before he could recover. The boy stumbled backward, but Yuria didn’t give him any room to breathe. She immediately followed him, dismantling his stance again before landing another clean hit.

And another.

By the time the fight ended, the poor boy was lying unconscious on the ground.

Yuria simply stood over him with her wooden sword in hand.

Her aloof expression hadn’t changed once.

"That girl is quite talented with the sword," one of the knights supervising the training said, nodding in approval.

Quite talented?

She had just beaten that poor kid like he owed her money.

My attention shifted elsewhere.

Froyers was fighting too, and damn, that brat was strong for his age. Unlike Yuria, who relied on technique and precision, Froyers seemed perfectly happy overpowering his opponents. He swung a larger wooden weapon with enough force to knock other children off balance, and at one point, he practically threw his opponent onto the ground.

Watching him immediately brought back an unpleasant memory.

I rubbed my stomach.

"That kick still hurts when I think about it, you bastard."

Arkens was different from his brother.

He wasn’t as aggressive or physically overwhelming as Froyers. Instead, he fought patiently, watching his opponent and waiting for mistakes before attacking. His movements were much more calculated.

Then I looked toward Elfriede.

And my eyes widened.

What the hell?

This was supposed to be her first combat lesson?
