Transmigration: The Tyrant General Can Hear My Thoughts
Chapter 282 - Two Hundred And Eighty OneChapter 282: Chapter Two Hundred And Eighty One
"What?!" Kade shouted loudly.
The shout escaped his mouth before he could even control it. The sound echoed sharply in the quiet study.
Kade quickly slapped his hand over his mouth. He realized he had just yelled at his commander. He immediately lowered his hand and bowed his head deeply, his face turning slightly pale.
"My apologies, my lord," Kade said quickly, trying to compose himself. His voice was shaking with shock. "I spoke out of turn."
Kade stood up straight again, but his mind was spinning in chaos. He looked at Damon’s back.
Kade thought to himself, his internal voice filled with utter disbelief.
"How can the general know?" Kade thought frantically. "Lady Isabel said the Lady betrayed him. And the General is just standing there, looking unbelievably calm? If the Lady truly betrayed him, why isn’t he furious? Why isn’t he ordering an arrest?"
Kade swallowed hard. He needed to know the truth. He needed to understand how the woman who had fought so bravely in the warehouse could have ever betrayed her own husband.
"But how?" Kade asked carefully, his voice full of confusion.
Damon did not turn around immediately. He kept his eyes focused on the glass window. He watched the raindrops sliding down the glass.
Damon took a slow, deep breath. He let it out quietly.
Then, he slowly turned his body around. He faced Kade. His face was serious, but it did not hold any anger. It only held a calm acceptance of the past.
"Do you remember," Damon replied, his deep voice smooth and steady. "When I told you to investigate about General Howe, Lord Ryde, and my father’s connection to that valley?"
Kade nodded his head quickly. "Yes, General. I remember it perfectly. It was right after the meeting with the King. We had just won the Eastern Valley from General Howe."
Damon walked slowly away from the window. He moved toward his desk. He leaned his hips against the edge of the wood, crossing his arms over his chest.
"I had done my own investigation," Damon explained quietly. "I looked deeply into the official estate records. I looked at the exact dates. I checked the signatures."
Damon paused for a tiny second. He looked into Kade’s waiting eyes.
"And I found out the exact reason Howe could take my land so easily," Damon stated firmly, delivering the truth. "It was because of Camilla."
Kade stopped breathing. His hands clenched into tight fists at his sides.
"She used my official military seal," Damon continued, his voice flat, showing no emotion. "She took my seal from my study while I was away. She used it to stamp a formal transfer document. That forged document is what allowed General Howe to claim legal possession on the land."
Kade was shocked. His jaw dropped open.
Kade stared at the General, unable to process the magnitude of the crime.
"She stole your seal?" Kade thought to himself, his mind screaming in terror. "She used it on a forged land transfer? That is high treason! That is a crime punishable by immediate execution! The Lady actually did that?"
Kade could not find a single word to say. He just stood there, dripping wet, staring at Damon with his mouth hanging open in horror.
Damon watched Kade’s horrified reaction. Damon understood why his aide was so shocked. A year ago, if Damon had found this out, he would have dragged Camilla to the royal cour himself. He would have thrown her into the hands of the law without a single drop of mercy.
But things were different now.
Damon continued his explanation, keeping his voice calm to soothe his aide’s panic.
"And he lost it," Damon added smoothly, a small smirk touching the corner of his lips. "When he struck that deal with me at the
camp."
Damon pushed himself off the edge of the desk. He began to pace slowly across the warm study.
"When we were initially planning to take the land back by force," Damon explained, detailing his past military strategies. "I found out that the transfer was legally binding because it bore my exact, authentic seal. The royal courts would have sided with Howe. I could not just march my army in and taken it by force. It would have caused a civil war within the kingdom."
Damon stopped pacing. He looked into the warm, crackling fire in the stone fireplace.
"So I started doing a deep, secret investigation," Damon said, his eyes reflecting the orange flames. "And that was how I found out about the forged document. I found out about Camilla’s involvement."
Damon shook his head slowly from side to side.
"I was trapped," Damon admitted honestly. "I could not act without exposing my own wife’s treason. But then, Howe became arrogant. He became greedy."
Damon turned his head back to Kade.
"Howe stupidly gave me the perfect solution," Damon stated, his voice ringing with victory. "He challenged me to a death match. He bet the land against my entire fortune."
Damon wanted to finish his sentence. He wanted to say how the fighter saved him.
"And Cami—" Damon started to speak, the name slipping naturally onto his tongue.
Damon stopped immediately.
His eyes went wide in sudden panic. He clamped his mouth tightly shut, biting his own tongue to stop the word from coming out.
"Oh no," Damon thought frantically in his mind. His heart gave a violent thump against his ribs. "I almost said her name. I almost told Kade that Camilla was the fighter. I promised I would keep her secret! I promised I would never expose her true identity to anyone!"
A cold sweat broke out on the back of Damon’s neck. If Kade knew that the delicate Lady Camilla was actually a trained assassin, the entire camp would eventually find out. The secret would spread like wildfire. He had to cover his mistake immediately before Kade noticed.
Damon quickly raised his right hand to his mouth.
He cleared his throat loudly and very harshly.
AHEM! AHEM!
He forced a small cough to hide his sudden panic.
Kade blinked, pulling himself out of his shock. He looked at the General, wondering why Damon was suddenly coughing so loudly.
Damon quickly lowered his hand. He forced his face to remain serious and unbothered. He smoothly corrected his sentence, replacing her name.
"That fighter," Damon said clearly, emphasizing the words to ensure Kade understood. "The anonymous champion who stepped into the ring... that fighter helped us get the land back."
