Chapter 283: Chapter Two Hundred And Eighty Two

Kade did not suspect a single thing. He was still far too overwhelmed by the revelation of the Lady’s betrayal to notice the General’s tiny slip of the tongue.

Kade finally closed his open mouth. He swallowed hard.

He looked at Damon. Kade’s eyes were full of confusion and sadness. He had grown to respect the Lady very much over the past week. He had seen her smile, and he had seen her fight for the General.

"But..." Kade spoke softly, his voice full of quiet pain. "But why did the lady betray you, General? Why would she do something so terrible?"

Damon stood silently by the fireplace. He listened to Kade’s sad question.

He thought to himself, his mind reaching back into the dark, cold past.

"Why did she do it?" Damon asked himself internally.

He remembered the first year of their marriage. He remembered how he had treated her. He had ignored her and let her felt like she was all alone. He had been a cold, unfeeling tyrant.

"She was terrified of me," Damon reasoned in his own mind, letting out a very soft, quiet sigh. "She was young, isolated, and probably manipulated by Lord Ryde and Isabel. They probably threatened her or forced her to steal the seal. She was just a desperate girl trying to survive in a house of ice."

Damon did not feel angry at the original Camilla. He only felt a deep sense of regret for his own past actions.

But more importantly, he loved the woman she was right now. The past betrayal meant nothing to him anymore. It was just an old, fading shadow.

Damon slowly lifted his head. He looked at Kade.

"I am sure she had her reasons," Damon replied.

Kade stared at the General. He heard the gentle tone in Damon’s voice. Kade realized that the General had forgiven his wife for the ultimate crime of treason.

A warm smile slowly spread across Kade’s face. He felt a wave of relief. The General truly loved the Lady. Their marriage was finally healing.

Damon looked at Kade’s smiling face. Then, his eyes scanned his aide from head to toe.

Kade was still soaked. His armor was shining with wet rainwater. His uniform underneath was sticking tightly to his skin. His lips were turning a pale shade of light blue from the freezing cold temperature of the storm outside.

Damon frowned deeply. His protective instincts instantly took over.

"You are freezing, Kade," Damon spoke strictly, his voice returning to its normal, commanding tone.

Damon uncrossed his arms. He pointed a firm finger toward the doors of the study.

"Go and find a warm guest room for yourself immediately," Damon ordered smoothly. "Do not ride back to the camp in this violent storm. You will stay here in the mansion tonight."

Kade nodded his head gratefully. "Yes, General."

"And before you sleep," Damon continued his strict instructions, wanting to make sure his aide was safe. "Meet Doctor Aris. He is staying in the east wing tonight. Have him check you."

Damon took a step closer, giving his final commands.

"Ask Uncle Murry what room Doctor Aris will be sleeping tonight," Damon instructed clearly. "And tell Uncle Murry to give you something hot to drink for the cold. Some hot ginger tea or herbal soup. I don’t want anything happening to my aide."

Kade felt a deep warmth spread through his freezing chest. Damon was famous for being a strict, harsh commander, but he always took perfect care of his loyal men. Kade felt incredibly honored.

Kade smiled a wide, slightly sheepish smile. He rubbed his cold hands together nervously.

"Thank you, my lord," Kade said, bowing his head respectfully.

Then, Kade raised his head and looked at Damon with a slightly shy, hopeful expression. His stomach gave a very small, quiet rumble.

"But..." Kade added softly, his voice sounding a little bit helpless. "I’m also very hungry, General. I haven’t eaten since the afternoon."

Damon stopped for a second. He looked at Kade’s sheepish face.

A very small amused smile touched the corners of Damon’s lips. He shook his head slowly from side to side.

"Tell Uncle Murry," Damon replied smoothly, his deep voice carrying a tone of fond amusement. "He knows what to do. He will feed you well."

Kade’s smile grew even wider. He knew Murry always kept the best roasted meats and sweet pastries hidden in the kitchens.

"Thank you, General!" Kade replied eagerly.

He clapped his wet leather boots together, bowed deeply one last time, and quickly turned around. Kade hurried out of the study, pulling the door shut behind him with a soft click.

Damon was finally left alone in the warm, quiet study.

The fire crackled softly in the stone fireplace, casting dancing orange shadows across the tall wooden bookshelves.

Damon let out a long sigh of exhaustion. The events of the day had been incredibly draining. He walked slowly across the expensive rug. He moved toward the large glass windows at the far end of the study.

He stopped right in front of the window. He placed his hands lightly on the wooden frame.

He looked out into the freezing night.

The storm was furious. Heavy sheets of rain were pouring down from the dark sky. The wind was howling loudly, whipping the trees back and forth violently. Small rivers of water were rushing across the stone pavement of the large courtyard.

Damon stared out at the weather. He was very glad that he and Camilla had arrived before the rain started.

Suddenly, a bright flash of white lightning completely lit up the dark night sky.

For one single, split second, the entire courtyard outside was illuminated as bright as daylight.

Damon’s eyes widened in shock.

He stared out the window. His breath caught in his throat.

Standing right in the very center of the courtyard, was a small, lonely figure.

The rain was pouring relentlessly down onto the figure. The person was soaked from head to toe. They were not moving. They were just standing still in the middle of the night, allowing the rain to hit their body violently.

But it was not the person’s stillness that terrified Damon. It was the color of their hair.

Even in the brief flash of lightning, the bright, vibrant color was unmistakable. It was a mass of curly red hair, plastered wetly against a pale face.

Damon’s heart gave a violent thump against his ribs.

He murmured to himself, his voice cracking with sudden panic.

"Camilla?" Damon whispered in disbelief.

He pressed his face closer to the cold glass, trying to see clearly through the dark, pouring rain.

"What is she doing out in the rain?!" Damon’s internal voice screamed in sheer horror. His mind raced frantically. "She is sick! She just drank the medicine to cool her blood down! If she stands in that freezing storm, her body will shut down! She could die!"

Damon did not wait another single second.

He spun his body around with speed.

He rushed toward the stand near his leather chair. He reached out and grabbed his military coat. He clutched the fabric tightly in his large fist.

Damon ran.

He raced out of the study, his boots thudding violently against the floor. He sprinted down the slightly illuminated hallway, trying to get to her immediately.
